Reiter Extenso R-EX shows Gallardo's still got it

Lamborghini is moving on from the Gallardo to the new Huracan, and with it, is taking its racing program in house. But the Bolognese marque's longtime racing partner Reiter Engineering has a thing or two to say about that, and is showing what it can still do with an old platform by introducing the new Gallardo Extenso R-EX. Designed to comply with GT3 regulations, you can tell just from looking at it that Reiter's new competition-spec Lambo is meaner and more aggressive than any version it's done before. Reiter widened the rear track by five inches to make it over 80 inches broad (the widest allowed under FIA GT3 regulations), cloaked it in carbon-fiber bodywork (to make it look more like the Murcielago R-SV the company built for GT1), fitted new camshafts (for a fatter torque curve) and Mahle pistons (for improved efficiency and reliability), and retuned the exhaust to give the fans something to cheer for. The result is an even more extreme take on the Gallardo than anything we've seen to date, and promises to give even the upcoming Huracan GT3 a run for its money in series like the Pirelli World Challenge, Blancpain GT Series and SRO GT Sports Club. Privateer racing teams will be able to get their hands on one for ˆ248,000 (a little over $300k) with the full confidence that Reiter's experience has to offer: To date the company has built over 100 racing cars that have gone on to win over 200 races and score some 400 podiums. So the best way to show off the range of the VW family is to cram a few thousand journalists and VIPs into a massive makeshift stand to outline the Group's goals, what's in the pipeline and what you'll be able to buy later this year.
To that end, VW pulled out all the stops on the eve of the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, bringing along 10 vehicles from across the range. Lamborghini Huracan GT3 racer unveiled [w/video]

While Lamborghini doesn't quite have the motorsports history of Italian marques like Ferrari or Alfa Romeo, the bullish brand is no stranger to the track. The company's latest challenger for racing supremacy is the Huracan GT3, which is competing in the Blancpain Endurance Series in Europe this year. Where previous Lamborghini racers saw development from outside companies – like Reiter Engineering for the Gallardo GT3 – the company brought much of that work in-house for the Huracan. Although, the motorsports experts at Dallara did help craft the aerodynamics here. Unlike the production version, the GT3 is purely rear-wheel drive, and the engine remains a 5.2-liter V10. However, it's hooked to a six-speed sequential gearbox. All of the adjustments to go racing, allow the GT3 to tip the scales at 2,732 pounds, a healthy reduction over the already light, 3,135-pound dry weight of the regular Huracan and even around 80 pounds less than the Super Trofeo one-make racer. That said, due to the balance of performance in motorsports, the FIA might still adjust the final number for competition. Lamborghini's Squadra Corse team will be racing in these vibrant lime green Huracans in Blancpain, but if you want to compete against them, the price for the GT3 is set at 369,000 euros ($427,400) before taxes. The company's official press release only mentions European motorsports, but earlier rumors suggest the brand might also offer the car to squads in the United SportsCar Championship.
