The Lamborghini Terzo Millennio is a brutally fantastic EV supercar concept
Mon, Nov 6 2017Lamborghini isn't known for bowing to convention. Ever since Ferruccio told Enzo Ferrari where he could stick his temperamental cars, and decided to build his own, it's been going its own way. This car, the Terzo Millennio ("third millenium"), built in collaboration with MIT, is very much a Lamborghini approach to the EV performance car. To begin with, it is obviously nothing else but a Lamborghini. Wild concept car touches aside, it's as wedgy and mean as anything to come out of Sant'Agata (and definitely anything to come out of Cambridge, MA!). There's some advanced tech here, too, as you might imagine with MIT's involvement. The most notable is the supercapacitor energy storage technology. Supercapacitors aren't ready for primetime yet, being very expensive and not quite as energy dense, although currently they're used in a few niche automotive applications. But MIT and Lamborghini want to produce one that'll work more like a main battery, but with greater ability to recharge and discharge quickly. That's ideal for brutal, explosive acceleration. If Lamborghini and MIT can make a breakthrough here, it'd let the decidedly conventional Lamborghinis of today (naturally aspirated, non-electrified) take a leap into the future on Lamborghini's own terms. The company is also exploring carbon composite batteries utilizing nanotechnology, which the company claims would reduce weight and increase the discharge capacity of the batteries. So, it seems, the Terzo Millennio might combine the two power storage technologies into the same drivetrain. Of course, like most modern Lamborghinis there's all-wheel drive, although it's in-wheel electric motor-based rather than the conventional mechanical type. It'd be easy enough to leave off the front motors for a Performante variant, perhaps. Or maybe in-wheel electric motors become the norm in the future. It's too early to tell; for now, this concept is AWD. The body is carbon fiber, and this concept previews some technology that can detect degradation in the carbon fiber early and potentially repair it with something called "nano-channels" utilizing a form of the technology that allows carbon composite materials to store energy. This technology deserves more explanation than we have room for here, and we'll get a deep dive on it as soon as we can. Lastly, Lamborghini wants a vehicle like the Terzo Millennio to sound like a Lamborghini. That won't be easy, since there's no V12 or V10 to be found.
Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato prototype spied testing in the snow
Wed, Jan 19 2022Back in the summer of 2019, which seems like so much longer than two and a half years ago at this point, Lamborghini showed an interesting concept called the Huracan Sterrato. It was a lifted, widebody version of the mid-engine supercar, and its name literally translated to dirt. It was quite cool, and surprisingly grounded. And it must've been received well not just by us, but possibly customers, because these spy photos seem to indicate Lamborghini is working on a production model. There are a few indicators, but the most clear is the fact this test car has a noticeably taller ride height than its pavement-pounding predecessors. The concept, for reference, had an extra 1.85-inches of ground clearance. Furthermore, the prototype is sporting roof rails like those seen on the concept. Some other interesting additions that may or may not indicate plans for the production car include the skid plate up front, the additional lighting on the hood, and a new roof scoop up top. They're all clearly temporary additions, but the concept had bodywork that suggested some sort of skid plate, as well as auxiliary lighting. The roof scoop is a bit of a head-scratcher, though. We're not one to turn down a sweet mid-engine supercar scoop, but roof rails would seem to suggest carrying stuff on the roof, which would seem to directly block said scoop. On the other hand, that scoop could provide cleaner air when out in the dirt. Missing from the concept are the fat fender flares, but that's not too much of a surprise. We would expect the powertrain is basically the same as that of the Huracan Evo with a naturally aspirated V10 and all-wheel drive. It will probably have specific driving modes that adjust the traction and stability control systems for sporty, slippery driving conditions. Lamborghini Lambo V12 Vision GT a real-life hypercar waiting to happen
Mon, Nov 25 2019During the World Finals of the 2019 FIA-Certified Gran Turismo Championships held over the weekend in Monaco, Mazda showed a sketch of the RX-Vision GT3 concept coming to Gran Turismo Sport next year. Lamborghini went further, not only revealing artwork of its future playable concept, the Lambo V12 Vision GT, but also parking a full-scale model of the concept on the gaming floor. Yes, Lamborghini Lambo V12 is a quixotic kind of name that takes us back to Ferrari LaFerrari, however, everything else about the jet-fighter-inspired single-seater has us looking to the future. Instead of the Roboracer, Formula E should put together a one-make series with these.  Designed by Lamborghini Centro Stile, the Lambo V12 is a cockpit with outrigger wheels, every one of the minimal surfaces designed to purposefully shunt air around the car to the Y-shaped rear wing. The hexagonal windows extending below the shoulder line are inspired by Marcello Gandini's 1968 Marzal concept. The shoulder defines the base of a rear-hinged canopy that extends to the Lambo V12's leading edge; according to the sketch, when the canopy is raised, even the pedal box is visible as it sits above the beltline. The primary controls are on the steering wheel, all information projected in the heads-up display. Behind the pilot, the 808-horsepoewer hybrid V12 powertrain from the limited-edition Sian FKP 37. Chief designer Mitja Borkert told Top Gear the math shows the Lambo V12 weighs 819 kilograms, which would rather nicely deliver a one-to-one power-to-weight ratio — in metric horsepower and pixels, at least. Even better for gamers, the car will apparently provide "intelligent, context-sensitive advice from one of the factory drivers." Even better for those driving on real roads — and who can afford such things — Borkert said he could see the holographic display a real-world item within the next decade. The Lambo V12 will appear in-game come spring 2020 after the design team makes its final revisions. We hope there are night races so the streaker can show off its light signatures. And we hope Lamborghini makes a run of 63 track-only examples, because they'll sell at any price.
