Volkswagen Group previews its wares on eve of Geneva show

The Volkswagen Group is comprised of 11 brands producing 240 vehicles across 49 factories throughout the world. So the best way to show off the range of the VW family is to cram a few thousand journalists and VIPs into a massive makeshift stand to outline the Group's goals, what's in the pipeline and what you'll be able to buy later this year.
To that end, VW pulled out all the stops on the eve of the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, bringing along 10 vehicles from across the range. We'll be delving into the details of each over the next two days of show coverage, but before that happens, you can read all about what we saw tonight from the cheap seats after the break.

Ford Mustang challenges Lamborghini in amazing drift battle

Engines scream and tires billow with smoke as Vaughn Gittin Jr. and Daigo Saito stage a drift battle through an abandoned Japanese resort that looks like a Russian village in this stunning clip. The high-performance ballet of these amazing machines sliding around makes this one of the best videos of the year. To fight this duel, Gittin straps into his 550-horsepower Ford Mustang, and Saito meets the pony car's challenge with a drift-prepped Lamborghini Murcielago. The drivers hit a curving road and show expert car control as the men slide these very different vehicles just inches from each other. Eventually, night descends, and they add some fire to the scene to give the stunts a more apocalyptic look. The production values for this short clip are phenomenal, and the editing makes the viewer feel right in the middle of the action. Watch two grandmas take a Lamborghini Murcielago for a spin

Not everyone loves cars enough to care if they see a tuned Lamborghini Murcielago rolling through town. But put two very excited grandmas in it, and you get a vehicle that draws attention everywhere. The ladies have an initial problem finding reverse in the Lambo, but they eventually hit the road with Peggy behind the wheel and Audrey riding shotgun. You have to love these gals. They roll the windows down to wave at everyone on the street and yell to them, "We're Lamborghini queens!" Their happiness is infectious, and people clearly are excited but a little confused to see two older women in a mean looking supercar. The only thing wrong with this video is that we wish it were longer. The gals should take the Lambo, or Ghini as Audrey calls the coupe, onto the freeway to open the throttle. Maybe they could cruise to a cars and coffee meet to hang out. Based on this clip, the pair seems game to drive the supercar anywhere.
