UPDATE: Kia K900 revealed, first in leaked shots, now in official photos
Mon, Mar 19 2018We have been posting sketches and teaser images of the upcoming Kia K900 sedan, but photos of the real thing are already available in South Korea. Some presentation slides of the car, wearing the name "K9" (that's what it's called over there), are now online on Kia's own website and in the photo gallery above. The restrained appearance conveyed in the sketches is present in the final car. There's still something German about it, with detail choices reflecting current BMW and Mercedes offerings: The front grille is certainly about as big as BMW 7-series' kidneys these days. The lights' LED accents are clearly visible in all photos. Fitting the car with real-life wheels definitely makes it lose something striking that the sketches had, but that is the case with all concept design sketches. The interior ambience depicted in the penned sketch has translated well to the photograph-like render: it will be interesting to see how the promised mood lighting modes will affect the interior. Earlier, screenshots of the slideshow have made it online on a Korean motoring site, as well as this "Job #1" style photo taken at a manufacturing facility. They showed March 20th as a date for the online unveiling, and the K9 microsite came online today. Kia has also published this commercial of the new car on YouTube. Kia announced that the car will be shown officially at the New York International Auto Show, but the date on the slideshow already promises something, perhaps local, for tomorrow. Kia recalling 377k Sorentos that can accidentally shift out of park
Thu, Oct 15 2015Kia has announced that it will recall 377,000 Sorento crossovers built between October 19, 2009 and January 31, 2013, which equates to model years 2011 through 2013. The affected vehicles may suffer failure in the brake-shift interlock mechanism. Put enough force on the lever and the interlock will crack or chip. Once that happens, the Sorento can be shifted out of park without stepping on the brakes. That's bad news for safety, and as the National Highway Traffic Safety Association bulletin notes, it's a violation the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards on theft protection. Naturally, Kia will notify owners of the affected vehicles and ask them to report to dealers for a new brake-shift interlock mechanism. Repairs will be carried out free of charge. The official start date of the recall is November 24. Read on for the official press release from Kia. RECALL Subject : Brake-Shift Interlock Mechanism Can Chip or Crack Report Receipt Date: OCT 06, 2015 NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V626000 Component(s): POWER TRAIN Potential Number of Units Affected: 377,062 Manufacturer: Kia Motors America SUMMARY: Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain model year 2011-2013 Kia Sorento vehicles manufactured October 19, 2009, to January 31, 2013. In the affected vehicles, if excessive force is applied to the gear shift lever, the brake-shift interlock mechanism may chip or crack allowing the transmission being able to be shifted out of "Park" without the brakes being depressed. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 114, "Theft Protection." CONSEQUENCE: Without requiring the brake to be pressed, the vehicle may be unintentionally shifted out of Park, allowing it to roll, which may result in a crash. REMEDY: Kia will notify owners, and dealers will replace the brake-shift interlock mechanism, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin November 24, 2015. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC124. NOTES: Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
Hyundai, Kia and Genesis EVs recalled for damaged charging control unit
Thu, Mar 21 2024Hyundai Motor America and Kia America are recalling a combined 147,100 U.S. vehicles over a damaged charging unit, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on Thursday. Hyundai will recall 98,878 vehicles, including certain 2022-2024 Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6, Genesis GV60, Genesis GV70 Electrified and Genesis GV80 Electrified models, while Kia will recall 48,232 vehicles impacting certain EV6 models. The Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) "may become damaged over time from transient high voltage and thermal cycling" and stop charging the 12-volt battery, which can result in a loss of drive power increasing the risk of a crash, the safety regulator said. Kia notes that there will be "audible warning chimes and one or more of the following: Illumination of "Check Electric Vehicle System" warning light, Master warning light, Charging system warning light, "Stop vehicle and check power supply" warning light, power down (turtle) warning light and/or reductions in motive power." Dealers will inspect and replace the ICCU and its fuse, as necessary. In addition, dealers will update the ICCU software. Material from Reuters was used in this report.
