2000 Jeep Wrangler Turbo Diesel TDI

For sale is my 2000 Jeep Wrangler TDI diesel.  I am selling the Jeep, as well as all my material, documentation, drawings, records, drafts, spare engine, and diagnostic VCDS system to support not only the pilot vehicle, but subsequent conversions with the TJ.  You will own the physical and intellectual property at conclusion of sale.

This project represents a personal mission to integrate two dissimilar electronic control systems and networks into a functional powertrain, with the ultimate goal being a high-efficiency expedition-class 4x4.  Many platforms were modeled along with six engine candidates.  The Jeep Wrangler TJ and the Volkswagen BEW/BRM were chosen for the pilot unit, with the new 2.0 CJA "Clean Diesel" being slated for a second future Jeep.  Approximately 3000 hours of research have gone into the project; the pilot Jeep represented approximately 500 hours of build time including field testing.

This has been an exciting and very challenging project, however I must pass it on due to health reasons that preclude my working on it any longer.  This is a huge loss for me and I do not want to let it go, but reality trumps my dream in this case.  Therefore, it departs.

2000 Jeep Wrangler SE with 139k original miles was purchased two years ago from the original owner.  The Jeep was 100% bone-stock and had zero modifications other than an aftermarket class 2 trailer hitch.  It was in very good original condition and provided an excellent base to create the pilot diesel Jeep.

2004.5 Volkswagen Golf TDI with 76k miles provided the donor engine, wiring, and powertrain controller.  It was a salvage car with documented maintenance intervals per VW schedule using spec 505.01 synthetic oil and MANN filters.

AX-5 5-speed transmission with SPEC clutch and pressure plate.  This setup has withstood all operational testing with zero failures or problems and has proven to be robust.

The finished Jeep has been modified for optimized expeditionary use, with secondary paved highway use.  Among other items, it has as new:

  • 3" lift using TeraFlex springs, Savvy control arms, Currie Anti-Rock sway system
  • 33" Mud-Terrian type tires
  • Dana 44 rear axle with Dana (Yukon) Powr-Lock limited slip differential 4.11
  • Dana 30 front axle, open 4.11
  • ARB "Tummy Tuck" low profile transfer case skid plate
  • Slip yoke eliminator with Tom Woods propshafts
  • Savvy aluminum bumpers and fuel tank skid
  • BesTop frameless top, door curtains, and front seats
  • OR-FAB swing-away tire carrier with ROTOPAX diesel fuel cells (4)

All support components, such as radiator, hoses, brake master cylinder/booster/pads/drums/shoes/stainless steel lines, wiper blades, ect are new.  The Jeep drives great and has excellent torque both on and off-road.  The idle stability of the electronically-controlled diesel is where it shines; the engine automatically adjusts the throttle-to-load at idle while you slowly crawl over obstacles.  It just lugs away!

Overall, you can expect 25 miles per gallon average.  Drive it hard and aggressively, which is easy and tempting, and it will get worse; keep it normal and sane it stays in the mid 20's.

I will be donating a portion of auction proceeds to a veteran's non-profit that has helped me and thousands of other vets cope with PTSD, brain injuries, and other debilitating diseases resulting from recent conflicts.  The freedom this project gave me to explore a dream was made possible by hope from members of this organization.  God Bless you guys.

I will reserve technical specifications such as network typology, design, and layout to the winning bidder since those should be kept proprietary.  Any other questions are welcome.  Additional build information can be view at http://www.wranglerforum.com/f5/my-d...tj-202985.html.  There are a couple of youtube links in that article as well that show the Jeep running.

Thanks for looking.

Auto critic calls out Corvette, Mustang and Cherokee faithful

Mon, 26 Aug 2013

Most automotive purists fear change, but not without reason. Change, after all, did kill big-block V8s, along with most station wagons and manual transmissions. But change has also brought with it far more performance, safety and fuel economy - not to mention ridding the world of shag carpet interiors, bias-ply tires and those horrible motorized seatbelts of the early '90s.
By this time next year, the Chevy Corvette, Jeep Cherokee and next-generation Ford Mustang will all be on sale and will all, in some way, have angered or offended purists. To those critics, Mark Phelan of the Detroit Free Press is preemptively telling them to stop complaining - at least until they've all been driven. From the Corvette's square taillights and the Cherokee's radical nose to whatever pony car purists will harp on the 2015 Mustang for, Phelan's column points out the positives of automotive evolution and the negatives of staying the course for too long. That's fair enough, but do you think Phelan is on point, or all wet? Head on over to the Detroit Free Press to read his words, then have your say in Comments.

Watch the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Hellcat blast off

Thu, Jan 21 2016

It's all but official. Jeep will produce a Hellcat version of the Grand Cherokee with crazy horsepower. We mean crazy. Today, our spy shooters have captured video footage of this demonic creation. It's pretty short, but you can see a dark Grand Cherokee launch with vigor and then brake hard to a halt. We think we detect the whine of a supercharger amid the commotion. Jeep boss Mike Manley has said on video that the JGC Hellcat will arrive before the end of next year. Specs aren't known, but it seems likely that the Jeep Hellcat will share the blown 6.2-liter V8 used in the Charger and Challenger Hellcats. We've also heard rumors the Trackhawk name could be used for this vehicle. In those applications, the beastly Hemi pumps out 707 manic horsepower. Really, why wouldn't you do this? Jeep sales surged 22 percent around the world last year to 1.2 million, the brand's best year ever. Clearly, Jeep decided it was time to add an extreme performance vehicle. Jeep already sells an SRT model that pumps out 475 hp, so adding a top-end Hellcat seems logical. And a Hell of a lot of fun. Related Video:

Final Toledo Jeep decision may have nothing to do with city's efforts

Mon, Apr 13 2015

Toledo, OH is doing all that it can to keep production of the Jeep Wrangler in its boundaries, but the biggest issue facing the plant may be insurmountable, no matter how desperately the city wants to keep the Wrangler local. The Wrangler is built in a rather interesting manner at the Toledo Supplier Park: Fiat Chrysler only handles the very final assembly of each vehicle, while two other companies, Kuka, a German firm, and Hyundai-Mobis, a member of the sprawling Hyundai empire, produce the body and chassis, respectively. The vehicles are then transferred over to the FCA part of the park, where they're painted and completed. This was, as The Detroit News explains, a convenient arrangement back in 2006 when the supplier park opened. Chrysler, which was still owned by Daimler at the time, arranged for Kuka and Mobis to handle production, saving it a huge sum of money. Both suppliers own their own machinery and buildings and employ their own workers. Now that FCA is a relatively healthy entity, though, there's not a lot of need to be sharing profits with two other companies. "What [FCA boss Sergio Marchionne] would like is to have the advantages of high-capacity utilization, owning that capacity and taking advantage of that for himself versus having a supplier doing some of the things his competitors do internally," David Cole, chairman emeritus at the Ann Arbor, MI-based Center for Automotive Research, told The News. "It really adds another level of complexity to the situation." While Sergio Marchionne is a man that generally gets what he wants, it seems unlikely that either Mobis or Kuka would give up their role quietly. According to Jon Zapf, Mobis North America's chairperson for UAW Local 12, the company "definitely wants to maintain their part of this production process." According to The News, Jeep is likely to announce the location of next-generation Wrangler production in June. Expect to hear much more on this one in the coming months.
