FCA's Pentastar V6 gets more power, efficiency for 2016

Already a vital member of FCA's powertrain lineup, the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 is receiving major efficiency improvements for 2016. Thanks to a massive amount of new tech attached to the mill, fuel economy is up six percent, and torque below 3,000 rpm jumps nearly 15 percent. The updates arrive first in the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee, but they should proliferate to other models eventually. At least in the Grand Cherokee, the tweaks push power up five horsepower to 295 ponies. FCA's engineers went through the Pentastar from top to bottom to eke out as much efficiency as possible. For example, there's now a two-speed variable-valve lift system that can run in low- or high-lift modes. This upgrade is responsible for 2.7-percent better economy, the company claims. A new intake manifold with longer runners and updated variable-valve times also helps boost the torque output. Further improvements come from pushing the compression ratio to 11.3:1, from 10.2:1 before. Perhaps most impressive is that despite all of the innovations, the latest Pentastar actually weighs four pounds less than the current version. Beyond the Pentastar improvements, all of the FCA US gasoline engines, except for the Viper's 8.4-liter V10, will be E15-compatible for 2016. The company says that it wants to be ready for the higher ethanol content fuel's greater use in the near future.

Reveling in the reveals: BRZ, Civic, Wrangler, QX55

It’s almost like there should have been an auto show this week. If youÂ’re an enthusiast, you know the week before Thanksgiving is when the Los Angeles Auto Show kicks off. This year, thereÂ’s no L.A. show, at least until next May. But Subaru, Honda, Jeep and Infiniti rolled out significant new products this week, making us almost nostalgic for auto shows. Serendipity, or more likely previously allocated marketing budgets, gave us a familiar feel of new products, even though we couldnÂ’t feel or touch them under the bright lights of the Los Angeles Convention Center. LetÂ’s break them down: 2022 Subaru BRZ 2022 Subaru BRZ View 62 Photos Subaru stuck to basic formula here: The 2022 BRZ remains a rear-wheel drive sports coupe thatÂ’s supremely lightweight, adequately powered and attractive. Subaru debuts its new boxer four-cylinder in the BRZ. ItÂ’s rated at 223 hp and you need to rev all the way to 7,000 rpm to achieve that output. I'd prefer a bit more than the 184 lb-ft of torque the powerplant offers (reasonably low in the band at 3,700 rpm), for some more off-the-line grunt. Say 200 lb-ft, though itÂ’s almost a cliche to argue the BRZ is underpowered.  The outgoing BRZ is one of the purest cars IÂ’ve driven, so rather than harp on the power, which will ultimately be fine, give Subaru props for focusing on chassis improvements to improve rigidity by 60 percent and aid turn-in. Admirably, the curb weight is less than 2,900 pounds, and the manual in Premium trim checks in at the lowest, just 2,815 pounds.  Aesthetically, I like it. ItÂ’s busier than before, and thereÂ’s a lot more going on with the front fascia, wheel arches and fenders. ThereÂ’s a bit of a Porsche vibe up front, which is good, and a bit of a Honda Civic vibe in back (think 2010) thatÂ’s not.  ItÂ’s impressive that Subaru resisted the urge to gratuitously power up the BRZ and remained focused on the essence of its goodness and appeal to enthusiasts. 2021 Jeep Wrangler 392 2021 Jeep? 2017 Jeep Model Year Preview and Updates

This will be a huge year for Jeep, with the introduction of an all-new compact Compass crossover - pictured above - taking place in November, 2016 at the Los Angeles Auto Show, and the pending introduction of an all-new Wrangler later in the calendar year. Not all Jeep products are Trail Rated, but those models will get the most marketing attention. CHEROKEE: Jeep's midsize crossover receives a mild refresh as it makes its way from assembly in Toledo, Ohio to a retooled plant in Belvidere, Illinois. Most of the Jeep feature updates are directed to the Cherokee Trailhawk, which receives heated/ventilated front seats covered in Nappa leather, a power eight-way driver's seat, Keyless Entry 'n Go and remote start. An upscale Overland trim adds a Heavy Duty Protection Group and Trailer Tow Prep packages. COMPASS: This all-new 'global' compact SUV will be built and sold around the world. Sitting atop FCA's 'small wide 4X4 platform' (like the newish Renegade), the Compass offers a more substantial presence than the smaller Renegade, while promising to be more maneuverable and responsive – at least with comparable four-cylinder power – than the larger Cherokee. Expect the 2018 Compass to arrive in Jeep showrooms by midyear. GRAND CHEROKEE: The Trailhawk, with up to eleven inches of ground clearance, best-in-class towing and a crawl ratio of 44.1:1, is revived, three new exterior colors are added, and the front fascia on all '17 Grand Cherokees is tweaked. For those wishing to reach the Summit, Jeep's Grand(est) Cherokee offers an upgraded interior, 'high' style. PATRIOT: At the tail end of its product cycle, the Patriot is unchanged. Of continued interest to Jeep enthusiasts is its genuine off-road credibility, propelled by the Patriot's Freedom Drive II off-road package. This includes a second-generation CVT2L (CVT transmission with low range), skid plates and a more offroad-centric wheel/tire combination. RENEGADE: If you're a traditional Jeep enthusiast you'll wonder why anyone would consider a Renegade. And if you're a new Jeep enthusiast you'll wonder why anyone would disregard this popular Jeep introduction. Still new to the showroom, in 2017 Jeep introduces two new trims: the offroad-oriented Deserthawk and attitude-oriented Altitude.
