Up for auction is a Jeep Renegade CJ7 in very good condition. One of my sons got this Jeep and thought it would be a fun toy, but his wife was not impressed so to keep peace in the home, he asked me to list it for him. He works construction out of town so he is not able to show the vehicle or answer questions. Hopefully you can see from the pictures that the vehicle is in really good shape for being 30 years old. We took it out today and were driving it around and I was impressed that it rides and drives as well as it does. The previous owner has taken a lot of time and invested a lot of money in this vehicle. The tires and wheels are almost new, put on this year, as I hope you can see and they cost $1500.  He installed polyurethane bushings, which I believe is one of the reason it rides so well. The 4 wheel drive works as it should in both high and low ranges. It has the Dana 360 front and rear differentials. It has locking hubs on the front. The motor started right up without any smoke or clatter. The gentleman told my son that he has it rebuilt about 3000 miles ago but I have no paper work to confirm that. The motor has obviously been cared for. It has a Howell fuel injection carburetor installed which was over $1000 and I have the receipts as well as the manual for that. The Jeep has air conditioning that blows cold. There is no rust on the frame, there is some bubbling on the body side panels, but it is very slight, which I took pictures of so that you could see. I pulled back the carpet in the front and there is some bubbling on the floorboards but no holes. If you took some POR-15 paint you could solve this problem. The interior is in good shape with seat covers on the front seats, I removed the seat cover on the drivers side so that you could see the wear hole on the edge of the seat. The passenger seat and rear seat are in good shape. It has a nice console with locking compartment between the front seats. It has a Sony radio/CD player with remote control that works and sounds good. As you can see from the pictures it has the hard top, which obviously is removable and it has the soft top with the side curtains and doors. It also has the bikini top and all this comes with the vehicle. It has a chrome brush guard that mounts on to the front bumper, but is not installed. I have had many Jeeps and this one has definitely been taken of. The previous owner said that he had just had the steering column and gearbox rebuilt, I have some receipts for that so I would tend to believe him. The Jeep runs well and goes down the road straight without a lot of tire noise. If you have any specific questions, I will do my best to try and find the answer and respond promptly. Because of some non-paying bidders recently, if you do not have any feedback or less than 5 please email me before you bid. If you would like to see the vehicle, I will do my best to make arrangements to show it to you. If you purchase the vehicle and you need it shipped I will be glad to meet the shipper and assist in any way I can. I have done my very best to describe this vehicle accurately so if you have any questions please ask before you bid. Being a 30 year old vehicle, even with the improvements, the vehicle has to be sold "as is". We are also going to list it locally, so if it sells I will remove the ad. Thanks for your interest.

NYIAS: 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk, ooh-rah!

Tue, Apr 5 2016

I was very happy to see Jeep offer a stand-alone, off-road-oriented model to the Grand Cherokee for 2017, the Trailhawk. This is not the first time for a GC Trailhawk, as they offered a limited run a few years ago to see if there might be a market for such a model. Looks like there is, as there are Trailhawk models for the Cherokee and Renegade, and now the Grand Cherokee as well. Just to be clear here, Jeep has always offered off-road ready packages (tow hooks, one inch more ground clearance, skid plates) for the Grand Cherokee and Cherokee in the past. They were called "Up Country," or more recently, "Off Road" groups. That was all well and good but, at least where I was living, almost impossible to find. Rarely would you ever find one so-equipped on dealer lots. If you ever saw one on the street, most likely the owner special-ordered it. Having said that, now that I'm living by the beach, I am seeing a few Up Country-equipped older Jeeps; not many, but more than I've seen in the past. As to the new Cherokee and Renegade Trailhawks; I'm seeing a bunch of them. It took a little while for the public to discover this trim level, but now I see them everywhere. Must be the orange tow hooks? Speaking of orange tow hooks... I'm not a big fan of them. Tow hooks for sure, orange ones, not so much; same with the matte black hood decal, not a fan. If I were ever to get a Trailhawk, it would be either dark gray or black, as that effectively hides the hood decal. So Jeep has packaged the Trailhawk as a premium model within each respective model line. While I fully understand the thinking, I do wish Jeep would also offer an entry-level off-road model, one with all the Trailhawk off-road goodness, but minus all the visual and luxury fluff. A lot of off-roaders don't want to pay, or can't pay top dollar for stuff they don't want or need. As to a name, how about "Trail," that being Trailhawk minus the "hawk;" or perhaps "Pioneer?" That's an old name from Cherokees of yesteryear. Back then the Pioneer was positioned as a mid-low level model. I think either name would work well for a back-to-basics-off-road-focused Cherokee and/or Renegade. Content it like the current entry-level Sport or mid-level Latitude models, but include the Trailhawk's off-road prowess. The Grand Cherokee should probably pass on that suggestion, as it would run counter to that model's high-end image. Related Video: Image Credit: Jeep Jeep open road

Inexperienced Jeep driver buries his Wrangler at sea

Mon, May 16 2016

There's an old maxim in off-roading that states, "Four-wheel drive doesn't keep you from getting stuck, it just gets you stuck in worse places." The truth of this statement was perfectly illustrated recently in a YouTube video of a Jeep Wrangler digging its own grave at the beach. On May 11, a YouTuber named Dan M uploaded a video he titled, "Drunk guy doesn't know how to off-road and ruins nice Jeep." The video, shot at dusk on a rocky looking beach, shows a blue Wrangler driving out into the surf without a care in the world. Dan, providing commentary along with an unseen female companion, was impressed with the Jeep driver's dash at first. "Wow, he must do that a lot because he ain't scared of getting stuck or anything," said Dan. As the Wrangler got deeper into the water, the Dan's friend expressed her doubts that the Jeep driver would make it out, especially when the Jeep got snagged on a little spit of sand sticking out into the water. Dan wasn't worried, however. "No, he'll manage to get out of there, he'll make it out of there. He'll back out and get out," he said. Dan's confidence in the Jeep driver was sadly misplaced, unfortunately. The driver managed to get the Jeep stuck on the sand bar then made the rookiest of rookie mistakes–he just gunned it. "Oh man, he's done! He's done!" yelled Dan as the Jeep driver proceeded to dig a huge hole in the sand that sunk the Wrangler up to its frame just as the tide started coming in. With that kind of dunking, especially in salt water, that Wrangler was probably a total loss, much like the Grand Cherokee that got washed downriver last week somewhere in Europe. Government Ending Jeep Investigation

Tue, Jan 21 2014

The government is closing its investigation into older-model Jeeps with fuel tanks that could rupture and cause fires. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Friday it has "no reservations" with Chrysler Group's plans to recall the vehicles. The agency is expected to release a report on its investigation in a few weeks. The decision ends an unusually public struggle between Chrysler and NHTSA. The agency asked Chrysler to recall 2.7 million Jeeps last June, contending that their gas tanks - which are positioned behind the rear axle - were at risk of rupturing and catching fire in rear-end crashes. Involved were Grand Cherokee SUVs from the 1993 to 2004 model years and Liberty SUVs from 2002 to 2007. Chrysler initially refused to recall the vehicles. The company said the rate of fuel leaks and fires after crashes was similar to comparable vehicles that were sold during the time in question. It was the first time in two years that an automaker had refused NHTSA's request for a recall. Chrysler later agreed to recall 1.56 million of the Jeeps and install trailer hitches on them to help protect the gas tanks. The company sent notices to the remaining customers saying their vehicles were fine if they have factory-installed or Chrysler-made trailer hitches. NHTSA said late Friday that it has been in close contact with Chrysler and will monitor the recall as it continues. Chrysler has told customers that it will start installing the hitches soon. "Consumers should have their vehicles serviced promptly once they receive final notification from Chrysler,"NHTSA said in a statement. In its own statement Friday, Chrysler said, "We share NHTSA's commitment to safety." NHTSA's outgoing chief, David Strickland, told The Associated Press in an interview last month that Chrysler had convinced NHTSA that the Jeeps were no more dangerous than similar vehicles sold at that time. "Those vehicles performed at a rate similar to their peers. That is the keystone analysis as to whether something poses an unreasonable risk to safety," Strickland said. Friday was Strickland's last day at NHTSA. He is joining Venable, a law firm. NHTSA began investigating the Jeeps at the request of the Center for Auto Safety, a Washington-based advocacy group. "It is tragic that NHTSA approved Chrysler's sham trailer hitch recall for Jeeps that explode in rear impacts," the Center for Auto Safety's director, Clarence Ditlow, said Friday.
