INFO:  The Jeep Commando was first introduced in 1966 as a versatile 4x4 that was equally at home on mountain roads or in town. Nicknamed the “mountain goat”, it gained a strong following & stellar reputation for being able to tackle any driving condition with ease.  Its competition included the International Scout, Toyota Land Cruiser, & Ford Bronco.  The C104 model was introduced in 1972 with a new conventional full-width grille.  It was offered with three AMC engine options: the 232 cu in (3.8L), 258 cu in (4.2L) AMC Straight-6, or the 304 cu in (5.0L) AMC V8.  Production in 1972-73 was limited to 20,223 AMC-spec C104 Jeep Commandos.  The Commando model was discontinued in 1974 when the Cherokee was introduced.

HISTORY:  Purchased new for $4591 by John Roberts on 17 February 1973 in Bristol Tennessee, he traded-in his 1968 Commando.  It spent little time in off-road use, as it was stored at a vacation home for many years to take shopping & touring.   Over 21 years it was driven 62,000 miles then sold to three collectors over the next 20 years and driven only 3000 miles more.  With 65,580 original miles, original paint, original interior, & original 258 Straight-6 engine, it has been well cared for.

RECENT SERVICE:  In August 2014 it was treated to a $4000 visit for a complete inspection & work to make it a reliable driver including all new brakes, drums, shocks, cables, & steering work.  It starts quickly and idles smoothly, goes through all gears with ease, stops with a firm pedal, and gets up to 65mph without much effort.  Electrical items all work as intended.  Spare tire is located behind the rear seat.

ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS:  This Jeep comes with the original 1973 dealer invoice & purchase agreement, original 1973 owner’s manual, tire jack, and paperwork throughout its pampered life.

ISSUES:  There is one small rust spot on the rear gate near the Jeep logo and one on the rocker, which will be a relatively easy fix.  It’s easy to drive but wanders a bit on the road.  While the shop continues to sort out this issue & may fix it, this would be the only mechanical aspect we are less than pleased with.  The interior is near perfect in its originality, with the only blemish being wear on the floor mat near the accelerator pedal.

LOCATION:  It’s currently located in northern San Diego California USA.  If you’d like to make an appointment for an inspection and/or test drive please give us a call at 760 845 8447.

If you are looking for a super low-mile, all-original time machine Jeep Commando to drive & enjoy, this is the one!

You probably won't see FCA's famous Easter eggs on an Alfa Romeo

Thu, Nov 17 2016

They started in Jeeps, with images of seven-slot grilles showing up on windshield edges, the text "SINCE 1941" appearing in the clear plastic of headlight units, and a relief map of Moab engraved into a rubber cubby liner. Then a Chrysler got a map of Detroit and the outline of Laguna Seca materialized near the Viper's window switch. We've come to call them Easter eggs, but Klaus Busse points out that they were never really meant to be secrets, just ways to dress up what he calls "dead plastic." He's nevertheless cool with the phrase being applied and likes the enthusiastic response these design details get. Busse is intimately familiar with many of them, having signed off on many of them in his time as head interior designer for FCA's US operations. He recently moved to Europe to lead Alfa Romeo, Maserati, and Fiat design there, so when I caught up with him next to the new Stelvio crossover at the Alfa stand in LA, I had to ask: Are we going to see any of those neat design details in Alfas or Maseratis anytime soon? The short answer is no. But he didn't say it's out of the question. Busse said if, for example, a designer wanted to put an Italian phrase somewhere on a car that was in keeping with the brand, he would allow it. Although he didn't come out and say it, it seems like he might feel this type of fun design element isn't necessarily appropriate for a higher-end brand like Alfa. And I get that. But I'm still going to check all the compartments of that new Alfa crossover for a map of the Stelvio Pass. FCA, found in violation of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act, agrees to buyback recalled models as part of record penalties issued by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. NHTSA closes book on Jeep 'trailer hitch' recall after all

Mon, 20 Jan 2014

After much debating and hand-wringing, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration now says it has "no reservations" with Chrysler's plan to recall certain Jeep Liberty and Grand Cherokee models over concerns that their fuel tanks, which are located behind the rear axle, could rupture or leak in the event of a rear impact. The longstanding argument between the two entities saw Chrysler openly defy the Feds after a request to recall 2.7 million units back in June.
Chrysler's "voluntary campaign" will instead see it recall 1.56-million 1993-2004 model year Grand Cherokee SUVs, along with 2002-2007 Liberty models. Affected vehicles will get a trailer hitch installed free of charge, which Chrysler says will provide an additional degree of protection for the fuel tanks in the event of a crash. Jeeps with Mopar-branded hitches or hitches that were installed at the factory aren't affected by this recall.
Chrysler's argument throughout this battle has been that the Jeeps in question are no more susceptible to fires than comparable vehicles from the same time period, a position that NHTSA has seemingly arrived at as well. "Those vehicles performed at a rate similar to their peers. That is the keystone analysis as to whether something poses an unreasonable risk to safety," said outgoing NHTSA boss David Strickland during an interview with the The Associated Press.
