I am selling my beautiful 20,500 ORIGINAL MILES 1985 Spring Edition Jeep CJ7.  This Jeep was featured in the April 2011 issue of Hemmings Classic Car.  It is factory original, in excellent original condition, and rare as hens’ teeth.

In the Spring, a young man's fancy turns to...Jeeping!   At least, that's what American Motors believed when they created the Spring Special CJ7 that was produced in limited amounts only during the early months of 1985.  Primarily an appearance package, Spring Special CJs were painted either CJ Red Metallic or Bronze Metallic with a unique striping package.  Also, they had white spoke wheels but could be upgraded with chrome spoke wheels, and the interior was improved with special linen texture high back vinyl seats with bright orange piping. It is remarkable how these modifications add sparkle to an otherwise utilitarian vehicle.  It was the penultimate year for the CJ, and they were going out in style!  ( See page 2 in 1985 Jeep brochure at http://www.lov2xlr8.no/brochures/jeep/85jeep.html  )

The exterior of this Jeep has the gorgeous Bronze finish, and it came with the optional chrome wheels. I bought a second set of wheels and tires for driving, and put the factory original wheels and tires away in proper storage for showing.  The interior is finished in linen texture heavy duty vinyl with bright orange piping in outstanding condition.  The headrests are embossed with the CJ logo.  The front carpet is like new.  The factory original Whitco top is also in outstanding condition.  This Jeep was Ziebarted at the factory, and there is absolutely NO RUST ANYWHERE.  This is one of the best CJs anywhere, in superb cosmetic and operating condition.  It won a FIRST PLACE TROPHY for CHOICE MAINTAINED ORIGINAL at Jeff Daniel’s 8th annual Jeep show in 2011.  This is a TIME CAPSULE JEEP.

I am the third owner, and have had this CJ for 6 years and maybe 800 miles.  The original owner, whom I have spoken with, lives in Georgia and bought the Jeep new at the Delmar Haynes dealership in Knoxville, TN.  He owned it for 10 years, occasionally taking pleasure drives in the nearby Smoky Mountains.  He did not take it off road and kept it garaged.  He put 18,616 miles on it in all that time, and wishes he had not sold it.  The second owner, who is a Jeep enthusiast with a soft spot for CJs and Scramblers, had the car for more than 12 years.  He drove it home to Youngstown, OH, and put it in his barn and covered it.  In the 12 years he owned it, he put a little over 1,000 miles on it.  It had about 19,800 miles on it when I bought it.  I drove it home to Philadelphia, bought a shed to store it, and put it away and covered it.  You can see the shed in the photos; it is no chicken coop. I have documentation of the chain of ownership that will come with the CJ.

This CJ is in EXCELLENT CONDITION throughout – please see the many photos I have posted on Photo Bucket here (copy and paste this into your browser) -http://s828.photobucket.com/user/brasscarbill/media/1985%20Jeep%20CJ7%20Spring%20Edition/1985JeepCJ7SpringEditionForSale1a_zps3dac3a71.jpg.html?sort=9&o=0    Everything is in good working order and the car has been well maintained by each owner.  I let the Pennsylvania inspection lapse this year because I have not driven the Jeep, but I will be happy to have it inspected if the new owner desires. The car drives smoothly with no problems.  I have used it sparingly when the spirit moved me on beautiful days.  I bought it just for this purpose, and it is a wonderful ride.  You may find this hard to believe, but I enjoy driving this more than I liked driving my Corvettes, which I have sold.  This Jeep was simply more fun to drive, and got a lot more thumbs up.  People like this CJ!

This Jeep has the 256 cu.in. inline 6 cylinder engine which is dead nuts reliable and plenty powerful for anything you care to do.  It has a four speed manual transmission which shifts very smoothly.  The clutch engages smoothly and feels like new.  The Jeep also has power steering, power brakes, the optional large 20 gallon fuel tank (polyethylene – no corrosion possible), heater but no air conditioning, and a period  AM/FM cassette that the original owner installed in 1985. The dash was not cut or modified to install the radio; it is a drop in design.  As said before, it has the optional chrome wheels and caps in excellent condition.  I also have the original spare tire and cover in storage.  I don’t believe the spare tire has ever touched pavement.

The engine compartment is factory original, and all of the various inspection marks in the engine compartment are still there.   Two exceptions to this are a single water pump-to-carburetor hose and the battery.  I did save the original hose in case you want to reinstall it for shows, but it has a tiny, and I mean tiny, pinhole in it that allows coolant to weep out when it is hot.  The battery is a fresh NAPA 75 month unit.  The first one failed after 24 months, so this one has only 4 years left on the guarantee, but it is absolutely new as of October and should last the full 6 plus years.  I also replaced the muffler and tailpipe, but modified the new unit to duplicate the factory original.  Again, see the photos.  I even searched out and used the factory original hardware to install it.  I also saved the original muffler, which comes with the Jeep.

The exterior is in excellent condition.  There is ABSOLUTELY NO RUST.  There are NO DINGS.  The TAPE STRIPES ARE EXCELLENT. There is a light scuff on the right front fender flare – see the photos.  I did it myself on the shed door.  Arggghh. There are no other marks big enough to show in the photos, but this is an original car – not restored – and you can find some evidence of use. The hood latches are not pristine, for example, but you have to search to find evidence of age elsewhere The original owner did install a home fabricated trailer hitch that strengthens the original factory arrangement, but I don’t believe he ever used it!  See photos.  I have a New Old Stock factory original hitch bar that comes with the Jeep if you wish to convert this detail back to 100% factory original.

The interior is beautiful.  It has never been smoked in.  On all seats, the upholstery is soft and supple and has no tears or stains whatsoever.  The carpet, doors, and dash are all excellent.  There is no visible wear on the controls or interior surfaces.  All controls and gauges function correctly.  The back seat area is the same, and the jack has never been out of the car except for cleaning.  The owner’s manuals are in the glovebox.  I have a second set of keys as well. Please note that the fish on the keychain stays with me!

This is a beautiful, very low mileage, very special, very rare Jeep CJ7 in excellent condition.  If you admire these American icons, now is your chance of a lifetime to own an outstanding example – perhaps the best in the world.

Weekly Recap: Ferrari looks to reclaim old success with new manager

Sat, Nov 29 2014

Clearly, Ferrari doesn't race for fourth place, and this week, major changes continued at the Scuderia. It was a rough year for Ferrari, and the Scuderia conducted its season-ending tests in Abu Dhabi this week with a view toward a fresh start in 2015 with new leaders and a new ace driver. Though plenty of other Formula One teams were disappointed with their finishes in 2014, Ferrari was perhaps the most eager to put this season in its rear-view mirror. The Scuderia finished a distant fourth in the Constructors standings with 216 points, well behind No. 1 Mercedes (701 points), and Ferrari failed to win a single race as the Silver Arrows dominated the grid. It was an especially bitter pill for a team that claims 16 Constructors championships and 15 Drivers titles – the most in history – and is the only surviving team from F1's first season, 1950. Clearly, Ferrari doesn't race for fourth place, and this week, major changes continued at the Scuderia. Ferrari named Philip Morris executive Maurizio Arrivabene as team principal. He replaced Marco Mattiacci, who held the job for only seven months after taking over for Stefano Domenicali, who resigned in April amid the Scuderia's early-season struggles. Phillip Morris (through its Marlboro brand) is a key Ferrari sponsor, and that played a role in Arrivabene's ascension. Still, he's no stranger to F1, and has been intimately involved in the Ferrari-Marlboro partnership. He also has served as the sponsors' representative on the FIA's F1 Commission since 2010. In a statement, new Ferrari chairman Sergio Marchionne said: "We decided to appoint Maurizio Arrivabene because, at this historic moment in time for the Scuderia and for Formula One, we need a person with a thorough understanding not just of Ferrari, but also of the governance mechanisms and requirements of the sport." Arrivabene's background is primarily in marketing and communication, and most recently he held the title of vice president of consumer channel strategy and event marketing for Philip Morris. He has been with the company since 1997. Arrivabene now leads a team that's rife with change. Marchionne took over in October when longtime boss Luca di Montezemolo quit in a disagreement about Ferrari's future, and the company itself will be spun off from parent Fiat Chrysler Automobiles in 2015.

Chrysler, Nissan looking into claim that their cars are industry's most hackable

Sun, 10 Aug 2014

A pair of cyber security experts have awarded the ignominious title of most hackable vehicles on American roads to the 2014 Jeep Cherokee, 2014 Infiniti Q50 and 2015 Cadillac Escalade.
Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek are set to release a report at the Black Hat hacking conference in Las Vegas, Automotive News reports. The two men found the Jeep, Caddy and Q50 were easiest to hack based not on actual tests with the vehicles, but a detailed analysis of systems like Bluetooth and wireless internet access - basically, anything that'd allow a hacker to remotely gain access to the vehicle's systems.
Considering this lack of hands-on testing, the pair acknowledge that "most hackable" could be a relative term - they point out that the vehicles may actually be quite secure.

Chrysler Recalling Nearly 907,000 Cars, SUVs

Fri, Oct 17 2014

Nearly 907,000 Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep SUVs and cars are being recalled for alternators that can fail and heated power mirror wiring that can short and cause minor fires. The recalls, posted Thursday by U.S. safety regulators, push the total number of recalls so far this year 544, totaling a record of more than 52 million vehicles. The largest of Thursday's recalls covers nearly 470,000 Jeep Grand Cherokees, Chrysler 300s, and Dodge Chargers, Challengers and Durangos from the 2011 through 2014 model years. The alternators can fail, causing the 3.6-liter V6 engines to stall unexpectedly. The problem also can cause the electrical system to fail, as well as knock out power-assisted steering, antilock brakes and electronic stability control. It can even cause fire or smoke, according to documents Chrysler filed with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. NHTSA opened an investigation into the problem in July, and Chrysler began its own probe in August. The company analyzed warranty complaints and alternators that had failed. The alternator generates electricity to recharge the battery and run other devices. Chrysler investigators traced the problem to heat fatigue in an alternator diode. Chrysler said it received 322 complaints about the problem, while 55 people complained to NHTSA. The company said it knows of one crash related to the problem, but no injuries or fires. The company will replace the alternators with upgraded versions for free. Owners will be notified in November. The company says customers who see warning lights or suspect a problem should contact their dealers. The recall affects cars and SUVs sold mainly in the U.S. and Canada, but some were sold in Mexico and overseas markets. The second recall covers almost 437,000 Jeep Wranglers from 2011 through 2013. Water can find its way into the heated power mirror wiring harness and cause corrosion. That can cause a short and could cause a minor fire and smoke, as well as cause loss of function of the mirror. The problem was discovered in February after three Wranglers in Canada were damaged. Chrysler says it has 26 complaints about the problem, but it knows of no fires, crashes or injuries. Dealers will move the wiring and install a protective shield to keep water out at no cost to owners, starting in December. Most of the Wranglers are in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, but more than 78,000 were sold overseas.
