1973 Jaguar E-Type Roadster.  A full body-off restoration was completed in Texas in 2008.  Dozens of photos of the restoration were made every step of the way.  I bought the car 2 months after the restoration and had it shipped to my home in Connecticut.  Since then,  I “sorted out” the car to the way I like it.  First, here is SOME of the work that was done in Texas:

************************************************************************

From the front to the back: all parts were repaired or replaced:

Headlights, rubbers, paint, AC, Radiator, Water pump, belts, starter, ignition coil, distributor, plugs, wires, balanced and blueprinted engine (with 400 miles) Jaguar of Houston, Brakes, calipers, Slave cylinder, Master Cylinder,  alternator and battery , new Clutch, power steering pump rebuilt 4 speed, Tach/Speedo, Tires and Tubes and flaps on original true spoke wheels including new spare , heater box, rebuilt strombergs (all 4) wiper blades, Interior. Complete interior redo, seats, dash, carpets, steering wheel, door panels, storage compartment, convertible top and boot, seatbelts, Fuel pump, fuel tank (removed and restored) trunk liner, and manual and finally the muffler.

*********************************************************************

A loose-leaf book with all the receipts from Texas will be is included.  When I first got the car, I was not very impressed with the paint job and had it re-painted in the same Regency Red.  The paint is as perfect as I guess it’s going to get, but there is still one paint bubble and a few edge-chips on the side of the door.  See the attached photos for details.  My car starts easily and runs smoothly.  The 12-cylinder engines purrs like…well, a Jaguar on the Interstate.  The front-end is perfect, the steering is sharp and effortless.  On twisting country roads, there’s no shimmy, no steering drift to the left nor right.  You will hear the roar and smell the exhaust.  The radiator does not overheat (a common problem), the heater actually heats in cold weather, the air-conditioner actually cools in hot weather (although I miss the point of air conditioning in an open-top car).  The biscuit-colored leather interior is perfect, the carpeting is perfect (front, back, sides and trunk).  All 5 tires have about 100 miles on them (the spare has “0” miles), the odometer reading is accurate as far as I can tell, but it really started again from”400" after the restoration.  The gauges all operate correctly and accurately.  The engine is set to idle at about 900 rpm.  At that speed, the oil pressure gauge reads 40 psi (see photo of both the tach and the oil gauge).  The tach has never been CLOSE to the red-line on my watch.  The top is in good condition, although I’ve never used it as I find there’s not enough headroom nor visibility for me.  There’s also a leather boot cover, operation manual (a reprint), service manual (original), tools, receipts for all my expenses since I got the car (except gas).

 ************************************************************************

Some of the modifications I made after I got the car:

I installed a hidden electrical cut-off switch on the dashboard.  There’s little sense locking a car with no top (or a fabric top); so just flip the switch when parking and the car becomes VERY hard-to-steal without a flatbed.  Use common sense when parking in unsecured areas.  This car attracts a lot of admirers (both male and female).

As a retired radio engineer, I have to have good radio while I drive (not cassettes, CD or MPwhatever, but RADIO).  I installed a Becker Europa II AM/FM/Shortwave set and an electric antenna.  It was the hope of listening to the shortwave band that sold me on this model, but I confess to never having received any station on shortwave.

I removed the dashboard clock and had the movement replaced with a quartz system.

 ************************************************************

The car has always been parked in a garage attached to my home and has never been driven in the rain nor at night (I don't see well enough to drive at night).

Why am I selling?  I’m 71 years old now and this car is for guys before/during their mid-life crisis.  I’ve developed a bit of a pot belly and arthritis, which makes getting in and out difficult.  Finally, I have 7 other similar cars and my third wife says, “Grow up!”  Yes, dear!

The car is located in Newtown, Connecticut, about 1.5 hours from the New York Airports.  You are encouraged to visit so you can inspect and drive the car for yourself.  Please bring your mechanic and/or drive it home.  If you want the car shipped, I’ll be pleased to help you make arrangements.  That’s how I bought the car in Texas.

THE RULES:

I hate rules, but please don’t waste your time nor mine if you’re expecting a windfall from Nigeria to pay for this.  I’ll be suspicious if you don’t call me before or during bidding to ask any questions that are on your mind.  203-426-2524, after 12 noon, Eastern time (my name is “Dave”).  I will expect a $100 refundable payment by PayPal as soon as we have a deal.  If you can’t pay this small deposit by PayPal, please do not bid.

***************************************************************************

p.s.

If you notice the photo of the door on the glove box (or “cubby” as the British say), you’ll notice the autograph of Stirling Moss in silver ink.  I don’t know, when or why he “signed” the car.  If you never heard of “Sir Stirling Moss,” please Google him.

Are you the Jaguar F-Type Coupe R-S?

Fri, 23 Aug 2013

It's no secret that Jaguar is working on a fixed-roof version of the F-Type roadster, but now it looks like it's also developing a high-performance model for said coupe. Captured sharpening its claws at the Nürburgring, this F-Type Coupe prototype could very well be an R-S or even a more track-ready R-S GT variant.
Our biggest clue suggesting the latter are its massive brake rotors with bright-yellow calipers - similar pieces are also found on the recently introduced XKR-S GT. This would make sense, since a report in May said that Jaguar is looking to create a full line of R-S GT models in a similar fashion as the Mercedes-Benz AMG Black Series. Missing from this prototype, though, are the telltale aero add-ons we seen on the XKR-S GT - go-faster bits like the latter's front fascia winglets and rear wing, though this model is obviously still being developed. Regardless of what this new grippier, quicker kitty is called, we say "Yes, please."

Xcar weighs in on the five best-sounding modern cars

Fri, Jul 24 2015

Getting behind the wheel of a well-balanced vehicle can be a wonderfully visceral experience, thanks to the combined feeling of things like the weight of the steering, the bite of the brakes, and, of course, the roar of the engine. Unfortunately, many of the sensations of driving require actually being in the driver's seat to understand them, but thankfully the intoxicating noise of a beautifully tuned internal combustion engine can be shared with everyone. In a new video, Xcar shares their opinion on the five best-sounding modern performance cars. The list is a symphony of horsepower. As opposed to keeping all of the vehicles brand new, Xcar actually picks a few that are recently off the market. They're all definitely champs, though. While the list itself is well stocked, you might be able to argue with the specific order, and it would be nice to hear a few participants from outside of Europe for a collection like this one, too. No matter. Every listener is sure to find something they like in the bunch, though. Turn up the volume and enjoy.

Top horsepower-per-dollar cars in 2017

Tue, Feb 17 2015

Bang for the buck. That quasi-scientific statistic is bandied about by motor heads everywhere from classrooms to barrooms, though the truth of the matter is that it's exceedingly complex to measure. A fair performance-per-dollar index would include something like cross-referencing MSRP (Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price) with point-to-point times on a track or driving route, which is obviously hard to do comprehensively. But, for the sheer joy of talking about cars and playing with a big spreadsheet, there's always the horsepower-per-dollar index, which is more straightforward, albeit hilariously flawed. There are vagaries even with this simple formula, of course: MSRP for vehicles can change at a moment's notice, to say nothing of the bottom-line shifting that happens with local deals or showroom negotiation. For this list we're running with the straight MSRP wherever possible, and as recently reported as we can get it. All the vehicles on this list are 2017 models, and all trims are reported where the lowest price and differing power levels intersect. Some choices were made for personal preference and some for sanity, avoiding things like all 48 trim levels of the Ford Transit, all with the same horsepower). If this list were a simple top ten, or even a top fifty, you'd be bored to tears with all the red, white and blue that is represented. Following perfectly with conventional wisdom, American cars really do lead the world where hp/$ is concerned. So, for the sake of variety (and the sheer joy of seeing a minivan 'win' one round of this thing) I've sorted out some top five and bottom five lists for broad power categories. Let's dive in. Less Than 100 Horsepower Okay, okay, this is hardly a category we'll grant you. But we've often tried to click off all the sub-100-hp cars on sale in the US, and making this list gave us an excuse. It also illustrates that none of these smallish vehicles bring cheap horsepower to the table - for that you'll need a motorcycle. The segment-leading Chevy Spark (above) asks just over $139 for each hp, and that Smart Fortwo Electric Drive has hp on sale for about the same price as its very distant family cousin, the Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG (insert your favorite Smart joke here... we know you want to).
