2000 Isuzu Vehicross Tone Edition on 2040-cars

This little beauty is one of the best examples of this iconic SUV offered at any time. I got it two years ago with about 62,542 miles on it.
As a hot rodder I can't leave anything stock so I started spending a lot of time lurking on the VehiCROSS enthusiast web site. There I learned of an early lover of these capable little tanks named Tone. I believe he was from Texas and his passion for these set the standard for all mods and improvements to come. I was able to locate, purchase and install a number of items he had specially made for these rigs. The rest I just learned from other enthusiasts cars and their trial and error modifications which guided me to successfully create the version you see below. For the person who buys this I'd highly recommend the VehiCROSS fourm for guidance and information. Probably the biggest visual mod was losing the factory chrome wheels. These new treads fill up the wheel well with a 'meaty" look without resorting to a lift kit, that has it's own side effects. The Nitto Terra Grappler tires are grippy when needed but quiet on the road. A really good choice. One of the Tone items I was able to get and install was an electronic short shift kit that restores the off the line launch lost to installing "big meats". I've also installed an electronic speedo compensator so it reads correctly with different diameter tires. The very cool built in trailer hitch was a Tone invention which he had fabricated in small batches. None were available when I wanted to install but members kindly emailed me all the specs and had a local fabricator build one for me. I incorporated improved depth that allowed a hitch lock to be installed. These hitches are not for pulling a big trailer but for me it was a way hanging a 3 bike carrier back there. The seats are in great condition because I have used Lexol leather conditioner for years which actually feeds the leather and doesn't dry it out. You can see in the pix I've removed the back seat. It doesn't look like anyone has ever sat in it. I will post more pix as time permits and the week goes on. Another major mod I do to all my liquid cooled cars is installing Evans Coolant. Evans is a Propylene Glycol coolant that contains no water and is much more effective cooling engines. It never breaks down and never needs replaced. Because there is no water, there is no rust, scale,or corrosion and has been proven in over the road trucks with well over 500,000 miles. The advantage in my cars is that it is very gentle on the engine and radiator. Check out the Evans website for more info. The old sound system with the old school CD changer was removed and three VDO gauges with a carbon face plate were installed in it's place Oil Temp, Oil Pressure and a Voltmeter all new and working perfectly. The Kenwood CD player has a thumb drive slot plus a iPhone port, removable face, all speakers replaced with mid level Pyle including new tweeters in upper door and topped off with a JVC mini powered sub under the drivers seat with a control mounted on the center console. New Bilstein shocks, new front axles/CVs, new turbo muffler and Supertrapp great sounding exhaust, K&N free flow, permanent air filter, new sunroof installed,Hella driving lights, Hella fog lights, a new front bumper[under cladding] back door release from button on dash or alarm key fob[s]. Junkyard Gem: 1998 Isuzu Oasis
Sun, Jun 16 2019When I'm crawling through a big self-service wrecking yard (as I do at least once a week) in search of interesting discarded vehicles, the top of my "look for" list always includes weird and obscure examples of badge engineering, the weirder and more obscure the better. So far the Nissan-made Suzuki Equator has eluded me, but I have managed to shoot such junkyard badge-engineering oddities as the Mitsubishi Precis (Hyundai Excel), Acura SLX (Isuzu Trooper), Saab 9-2X (Subaru Impreza) and Saturn Astra (Opel Astra). Isuzu's dire need for a minivan in the late 1990s led to a deal with Honda to sell the first-generation Odyssey as the Oasis (even as the Trooper became the Honda Passport). Few bought the Oasis, but I found one in a Denver yard a few months back. Pure Honda throughout, down to the VTEC badges on the engine. This is the 2.3-liter F23 four, rated at 150 horsepower for 1998. Sold new in Denver, will be crushed in Denver. Though Americans bought many a Geo or Chevy built by Isuzu during the 1980s and 1990s (not to mention the big-selling Isuzu-made Chevy LUV truck of the 1970s), the Isuzu brand never really caught on over here. By 2009, Isuzu was gone. The first-generation Odyssey was well-made and efficient, but it was designed for the Japanese home market and thus was too small for most American van shoppers in 1998 (most of whom were moving to SUVs around that time, anyway). You could fit a lot of people and gear in this small-footprint machine, but that was more important in crowded Japanese cities than in sprawling American suburbia. Collectible? Not at all. But an interesting piece of automotive history. I can't find any Oasis ads online, so let's watch a JDM commercial for the first-gen Odyssey, featuring the Addams Family. GM recalling 316k vehicles due to headlamp faults
Mon, Dec 1 2014General Motors has announced a recall covering 316,357 vehicles globally, due to the possibility of sporadic or permanent failure of the low-beam headlamps. 273,182 of these vehicles are in the United States, while the remaining affected units are in Canada, Mexico, and elsewhere. This recall includes the 2006-09 Buick LaCrosse (pictured above), 2006-07 Chevy TrailBlazer and TrailBlazer EXT, 2006-07 GMC Envoy and 2006 GMC Envoy XL, 2006-07 Buick Rainier, 2006-08 Saab 9-7X, and 2006-08 Isuzu Ascender. In an email sent to Autoblog, General Motors explains that if the headlamp driver modules are not functioning correctly, "the low-beam headlamps and daytime running lamps could intermittently or permanently fail to illuminate." GM states that this problem does not affect things like high-beams, turn signals, marker lamps, or foglamps. As of this writing, GM states it "has not been able to confirm whether the HDMs in these vehicles caused any vehicle accidents." The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has been notified, but the recall has not yet posted to the government agency's website. Scroll down to read the full details in GM's email. General Motors is recalling 273,182 Buick LaCrosse sedans and Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, Saab and Isuzu midsize SUVs in the U.S. for possible intermittent or permanent loss of low beam headlamps. Affected models are: 2006-2009 Buick LaCrosse sedans; 2006-2007 Chevrolet TrailBlazer and 2006 TrailBlazer EXT; 2006-2007 GMC Envoy and 2006 Envoy XL; 2006-2007 Buick Rainier; 2006-2008 Saab 9-7X and 2006-2008 Isuzu Ascender midsize SUVs. If the headlamp driver modules is not operating correctly, the low-beam headlamps and daytime running lamps could intermittently or permanently fail to illuminate. This condition does not affect the high-beam headlamps, marker lamps, turn signals, or fog lamps. GM has not been able to confirm whether the HDMs in these vehicles caused any vehicle accidents. The total population, including the U.S., Canada, Mexico and exports from North America is 316,357. The NHTSA was sent the Part 573 information for this recall on November 25. It has not yet posted to the NHTSA website. Junkyard Gem: 1984 Isuzu P'up
Sat, Aug 7 2021General Motors, wishing to sell a small pickup to compete with the likes of the Toyota Hilux and Nissan 521, began importing the Isuzu Faster for the 1972 model year, equipping it with Chevrolet LUV badges. Ford brought over the Mazda Proceed as the Courier the same year, while Chrysler turned to Mitsubishi to provide the Plymouth Arrow Truck and Dodge Ram 50 a bit later on. Once GM introduced the all-Detroit S-10 for the 1982 model year, however, the LUV's reign ended. Fortunately for fans of the Light Utility Vehicle, Isuzu began selling these trucks under its own badging here in 1981. This truck was called the P'up, and sales continued through 1987. Here's one of those P'ups, found in a Denver boneyard last month. This truck has the long-bed option. The purple paint and black stripes appear to be non-factory items, as the engine-compartment paint is silver. Under the hood, we see the 1.9-liter G200Z engine, as used in the Impulse and early Trooper. It had 86 horsepower on tap, which made this truck quite a bit zippier than the version with the 58-horse diesel (several decades back, I had a job that involved driving a diesel P'up and I can state from experience that the oil-burning P'up was an agonizingly slow machine). Still, this truck must have been on the poky side, what with its (optional) three-speed automatic transmission. What's this— air conditioning in a compact pickup? That was still something of a blasphemous idea in the middle 1980s. Someone installed a functional cold-air induction system involving an aftermarket air cleaner protruding from the hood, above the carburetor. Let's hope there was a filter element in here, because it doesn't do a carb any good to suck in bugs and dirt (not to mention filling with water while parked outdoors during rainstorms). This is by far the most common sticker found on vehicles in Denver-area wrecking yards. The Incredibles Empire appears to get mightier with each passing day, though I see plenty of stickers from other cannabis-related businesses in these yards. Fox Street Wellness is still around, though under a new name. What better vehicle for picking up a bag of Girl Scout Cookies weed ("best reserved for experienced cannabis consumers") than a purple P'up with hood-mounted air cleaner? Today, the Purple P'up's final parking spot is just a few miles to the north of this dispensary.
