2000 Isuzu Vehicross Tone Edition on 2040-cars

This little beauty is one of the best examples of this iconic SUV offered at any time. I got it two years ago with about 62,542 miles on it.
As a hot rodder I can't leave anything stock so I started spending a lot of time lurking on the VehiCROSS enthusiast web site. There I learned of an early lover of these capable little tanks named Tone. I believe he was from Texas and his passion for these set the standard for all mods and improvements to come. I was able to locate, purchase and install a number of items he had specially made for these rigs. The rest I just learned from other enthusiasts cars and their trial and error modifications which guided me to successfully create the version you see below. For the person who buys this I'd highly recommend the VehiCROSS fourm for guidance and information. Probably the biggest visual mod was losing the factory chrome wheels. These new treads fill up the wheel well with a 'meaty" look without resorting to a lift kit, that has it's own side effects. The Nitto Terra Grappler tires are grippy when needed but quiet on the road. A really good choice. One of the Tone items I was able to get and install was an electronic short shift kit that restores the off the line launch lost to installing "big meats". I've also installed an electronic speedo compensator so it reads correctly with different diameter tires. The very cool built in trailer hitch was a Tone invention which he had fabricated in small batches. None were available when I wanted to install but members kindly emailed me all the specs and had a local fabricator build one for me. I incorporated improved depth that allowed a hitch lock to be installed. These hitches are not for pulling a big trailer but for me it was a way hanging a 3 bike carrier back there. The seats are in great condition because I have used Lexol leather conditioner for years which actually feeds the leather and doesn't dry it out. You can see in the pix I've removed the back seat. It doesn't look like anyone has ever sat in it. I will post more pix as time permits and the week goes on. Another major mod I do to all my liquid cooled cars is installing Evans Coolant. Evans is a Propylene Glycol coolant that contains no water and is much more effective cooling engines. It never breaks down and never needs replaced. Because there is no water, there is no rust, scale,or corrosion and has been proven in over the road trucks with well over 500,000 miles. The advantage in my cars is that it is very gentle on the engine and radiator. Check out the Evans website for more info. The old sound system with the old school CD changer was removed and three VDO gauges with a carbon face plate were installed in it's place Oil Temp, Oil Pressure and a Voltmeter all new and working perfectly. The Kenwood CD player has a thumb drive slot plus a iPhone port, removable face, all speakers replaced with mid level Pyle including new tweeters in upper door and topped off with a JVC mini powered sub under the drivers seat with a control mounted on the center console. New Bilstein shocks, new front axles/CVs, new turbo muffler and Supertrapp great sounding exhaust, K&N free flow, permanent air filter, new sunroof installed,Hella driving lights, Hella fog lights, a new front bumper[under cladding] back door release from button on dash or alarm key fob[s]. Junkyard Gem: 1992 Geo Storm
Mon, May 15 2017GM's Geo brand existed from the 1989 through 1997 model years. While mostly remembered today for the Suzuki Cultus-based Metro (which continued to be sold with Chevrolet badging until 2001), there were also Geo Prizms (California-built Toyota Corollas), Geo Spectrums (Isuzu I-Mark), Geo Trackers (Suzuki Sidekick), and Geo Storms (Isuzu Impulse). Storms are very rare now, but I found this one in Colorado last week. The idea of the Geo brand was that it would lure young car buyers in a way that wouldn't be possible with stodgy brands such as Oldsmobile or Buick. While GM never sold as many Geos as hoped, enough hit American roads that they were pretty numerous for a while. 1980s-style pink-and-blue graphics remained relevant into the early 1990s. I'm not sure if these pink decal stripes were done at the factory, at a dealership, or later on in someone's back yard. The Storm GSi was the factory-hot-rod version, but this is an ordinary Storm with the 95-horsepower, 12-valve engine. Automatic transmission, of course. It never made it to 100,000 miles. The car seems to be in good shape, so perhaps something broke at about age 10 and it sat in a garage for the next 15 years. This content is hosted by a third party. GM recalls over 230,000 more Trailblazer-family SUVs over door electronics
Sun, 16 Jun 2013Back in August, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced a recall on the General Motors GMT360 SUVs (Buick Rainier, Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, Isuzu Ascender and Saab 9-7X) ranging from the 2005 to 2007 model years and the 2006 GMT370 SUVs (Chevrolet Trailblazer EXT and GMC Envoy XL) due to potential fires associated with the driver's door module. Initially limited to 250,000 units sold or registered in 20 Snow Belt states (and the District of Columbia), the recall has now been expanded to include an additional 193,000 of these SUVs in the US and, according to The Detroit News, 40,000 more sold outside the US, including Canada and Mexico.
Like the original recall, the issue is still a faulty driver's door module that can short out, which could lead to a fire. The Detroit News is reporting that, out of the 443,000 units being recalled, GM says that there were 58 fires that caused 11 minor injuries, and the expanded recall accounted for six fires and one injury. Despite the lower number of fires, the recall notice recommends that owners park their vehicles until the recall repairs has been performed.
On recalled units with functional modules, the repair consists of a protective coating being applied to the module, while vehicles with modules that are not working properly will have the driver's door module replaced. The official recall notice is posted below, and it includes contact information for customers of all five brands.
Junkyard Gem: 1997 Acura SLX
Tue, Nov 27 2018When I'm prowling wrecking yards, I'm always on the lookout for obscure examples of badge engineering, and the weirder they are, the better I like them. While I haven't managed to spot a junked Suzuki Equator yet, I have photographed such rarities as the Saab 9-2x and Isuzu Ascender. A few weeks ago, I encountered one of the real oddities of the Honda-Isuzu dealmaking of the 1990s: a 1997 Acura SLX, a luxed-up Isuzu Trooper that sold very poorly and is now mostly forgotten today. Plenty of Acura SUVs designed and built entirely by Honda roll out of American showrooms today, but the 1990s SUV boom caught Honda by surprise. The first MDX wasn't ready until the 2001 model year, so Honda made a deal to take Isuzu Troopers, apply wood and leather inside and Acura badges outside, and cash in on North Americans' increasing disdain for minivans, sedans, and station wagons. Americans were very familiar with the Trooper, which was sold here from the middle 1980s until the 2002 model year, when the Chevrolet Trailblazer-based Ascender went on sale. The Isuzu name stuck around on these shores until 2008. The SLX was a decent enough truck, but there was no disguising its proletariat Trooper roots from status-conscious SUV shoppers who wanted to look more oligarchic while conquering a half-inch of snow in the mall parking lot. It didn't help that the 1997 Trooper L listed at $27,800 and the SLX Premium cost $38,300 (that's about $44,200 and $60,900 in inflation-adjusted 2018 bucks). SLX sales started off weak and plummeted after that. After 1999, the SLX was done. I spent years trying to find one in California and Colorado wrecking yards, but the few that were sold seemed to be sturdy enough to stay alive for a couple of decades. Finally, this high-mile '97 appeared in a Denver yard. This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. Manage Settings.
