Infiniti spruces up the Q50 for 2018

Though overshadowed by the literally larger QX80 Monograph SUV concept, Infiniti's revised 2018 Q50 still made an appearance at the stand in New York. It joins a long list of cars including the Acura TLX, Hyundai Sonata, Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, VW Golf, and Toyota Sienna and Yaris that all went under the knife for the show. The Infiniti Q50's update may be one of the most mild, though, as it only consisted of cosmetic changes. Up front, the grille has been enlarged and given more prominent swoops at each corner. On the S version, sharp creases appear on either side of the primary grille and descend down to the lower, center grille. The outboard grilles of the front bumper have changed shape, too, and they now feature contrasting black plastic trim. The standard Q50 has a new bumper, as well, and though less aggressive than the S version, it still looks sporty with a more pronounced chin spoiler. Both iterations of the 2018 Q50 share the same tail end. The main change is in the rear bumper. A center diffuser has now appeared at the base. The contour of the diffuser is echoed by two creases in the bumper at progressively higher points. On the S model, the panel between the diffuser and the first crease is painted black, and the diffuser is painted in the body color. The standard model's entire bumper is painted in body color, and the diffuser looks to be a more muted black or gray. Inside, even fewer changes have been made. A new steering wheel with reshaped thumb grips is now included. Infiniti also added new stitching to the instrument panel cover and leather shift knob. Infiniti Q60 Coupe spied in production guise

Here is the best news we've had all day: the production Infiniti Q60 Coupe will bear an uncanny resemblance to the concept car that previewed it earlier this year in Detroit. We know this thanks to our very first round of spy photos of the heavily camouflaged production car. Although there are only three images to draw from, we've got a clear picture of the concept-inspired lines of this new two-door. In particular, the front and rear fascias look to draw a lot of inspiration from the concept. In front, the headlights look to be similar in shape, while the double-arch grille looks largely unchanged from what the company previewed. Perhaps the biggest change up front is around the fog lights, which look to sit in far more conventional housings. Also gone is the Q60 Concept's Formula One-inspired chin, possibly in part due to the company's (and parent Renault's) perilous position as a title sponsor for the Red Bull Racing team. The taillights reinforce the concept car inspiration, retaining a similarly svelte shape and tying in with a small trunk lid. Also like the Q60 Concept, our spies report that a twin-turbocharged, 3.0-liter V6 will be on offer, likely as the range-topping engine. We'd expect the volume motor to be the Mercedes-Benz 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder found in the likes of the new Q30, as well as the CLA-, GLA-, and A-Class. It's also certainly possible that Infiniti's long-serving 3.7-liter V6 will be available in some form. Whatever engines arrive, we can expect six-speed manual and seven-speed automatic transmissions to be the sole options. Have a look at the photos up at the top of the page. 4 ways Infiniti’s Q Inspiration concept bridges present and future

Infiniti's new Q Inspiration concept is a striking fastback sedan that the company says reflects an inflection point for both the luxury brand and the broader auto industry itself. It represents a bridge between technologies. That's true in the literal sense; it employs Infiniti's new variable compression turbocharged engine technology, which provides performance features while maximizing efficiency, and bridges the gap to more advanced powertrains. It also features Nissan's ProPilot semi-autonomous driving technology. But it's also true for the concept car's design, which Infiniti says provides a simple, elegant solution to complex technological questions — offering a palate cleanser, if you will, for the complicated technologies hidden beneath the gleaming surfaces. Oddly enough, the futuristic-looking Q Inspiration owes a debt of gratitude to the Prototype 9, the concept based on a 1940s-style grand prix car that Infiniti released last year. Alfonso Albaisa, Infiniti's senior vice president for global design, said that project became "a kind of a blank canvas for us to play with" and allowed for new discovery and expression with minimal brush strokes. It also led designers back to Ma, the Japanese concept of mastery of empty space. We spoke with Albaisa about how the concept's design echoes the theme of bridging the present and future. 1. The cabin's forward proportion and roominess Using the space-efficient VC-Turbo engine gave the designers space to shift the cabin forward and move the A-pillars back, creating a more centered and elongated cabin, with maximum headroom. The interior is clean, with orange and black leather with orange accents and backlit birch wood accents. The center console is floating, providing seamless connectivity to technology and hiding mechanical elements. Albaisa says it's the first manifestation of Infiniti's new form language for an era of advanced powertrain and future technologies. 2. The grille In what Albaisa describes as "a little bit of an accident" and "kind of tongue-in-cheek," the Q Inspiration's grille is a kind of trompe l'oeuil phenomenon. From directly in front, you can see the small fins, but viewed from the side, they disappear. So much so that Albaisa said he was initially fooled. "From a functional point of view, we need to breathe," he said. "But I think in the future, where there'll be a lot different types of technology, probably the car can breathe less. So we don't need that dominating big open mouth.
