2015 Hyundai Genesis demonstrates safety with high-stakes blind tests

For better or worse, technology like adaptive cruise control, backup cameras, lane keeping assist and other safety features have revolutionized the way cars drive. Hyundai is proving just how advanced its assists are in a trio of new videos starring veteran stunt and race driver Rhys Millen.
Each video puts Millen behind the wheel of a 2015 Hyundai Genesis with all of its windows blacked out. He's challenged to prove the usefulness of the car's backup camera, lane assist and automatic emergency braking by making it through three dangerous situations while driving blind.
At about two-minutes each, the videos are quick to watch, even if the amount of danger Millen is ever really in seems somewhat questionable. The one titled The Gauntlet, which tests the backup cam to swinging transport containers, is probably the best of the bunch. Hyundai recalls 205,000 Elantras for possible power steering failure [UPDATE]

UPDATE: Autoblog reached out to Hyundai spokesperson Jim Trainor for more information about this recall. He let us know via email: "Owners will be notified beginning in the second quarter." Also, there have been "no accidents, injuries nor fatalities," as a result of this issue. Hyundai is recalling 204,768 examples of the 2008-2010 Elantra sedan and 2009-2010 Elantra Touring because of possible failure of the electrically assisted power steering. The problem in these vehicles is that the ECU for the power steering can "sense a discrepancy in the steering input signals and, as a result, disable the steering power assist," according to documents submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. If this happens, then drivers could suddenly experience a more difficult time driving the Elantras. According to a chronology submitted to NHTSA (that you can read in full as a PDF, here), Hyundai first became aware of this problem in 2010 and issued a TSB for it in 2011. At that time, just 0.25 percent of sedans and 0.36 percent of Touring models were shown to have the fault. However by October 2014, the issue had gotten worse, and 1.3 percent of four-doors and 1.9 percent of the hatchbacks were exhibiting it. The automaker believed that by maintaining manual steering the vehicles were still within the law, but "the industry has increasingly handled similar issues through safety recalls." In most cases, turning the ignition off and then back on rectifies things, but to fix this, Hyundai is updating the power steering control unit on these models. Hyundai Elantra interior teased

Hyundai doesn't seem too concerned about keeping the next-gen Elantra a secret. Following a recent teaser image of the updated exterior, the Korean company is now giving the world a look at the inside of its upcoming sedan. Similar to the outside, this monochrome rendering shows a minimalist overhaul for the interior. The controls are limited to a few buttons near the gearshift, some nobs on the center stack, and the functions on the steering wheel. The infotainment system is positioned at the center of the dashboard and is flanked by the HVAC vents. For a slight visual flourish, the dash wears a two-tone finish with a lighter shade on the bottom. A piece of trim stretches across the whole width to break up the colors. Hyundai confirmed the next-gen Elantra's debut at the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show in November. That leaves a lot of time for even more teasers. Rumors suggest the powertrain range might include a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder, which produces 175 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque in the 2016 Tucson.
