Hyundai pickup gets glimmer of hope, Equus may go turbo

While it still doesn't technically have a green light for production from headquarters yet, rumors over the last few weeks suggest that the Hyundai Santa Cruz is all but certain to arrive in showrooms eventually. Now, we might be getting a hint about which of the company's models that the unibody truck might share underpinnings with. According to Auto World News, the platform from the 2016 Tucson and upcoming 2017 Elantra is a potential choice for the pickup. "We're always looking for efficiencies," said an unnamed Hyundai product planner to the website. "If you look at how well the Santa Cruz was received, it certainly helps make the case." An earlier rumor also hinted the truck might be the automaker's first diesel-powered model in the US. Meanwhile at the top of the brand's lineup, the next-generation Equus may see some significant changes. "Like much of that segment, it's fair to say you can expect the Equus will expand," the product planner said. Underneath the larger hood, a turbocharged powerplant is reportedly being considered. Given the development of a twin-turbo V6 from Hyundai with around 420 horsepower, that part of the rumor certainly makes some sense. A 10-speed automatic might also be offered eventually. Hyundai Genesis to get twin-turbo V6 in 2017 or 2018

Hyundai is looking to turbocharged power as ways to downsize its engines for better emissions and fuel economy while maintaining power. Among the new mills slated to launch is a twin-turbo V6 that's likely going into the Genesis in a few years. "You're going to see smaller displacement, more use of turbocharging. A lot of it is weight-related, all of it is CAFE-related," Hyundai Motor America CEO David Zuchowski said to Automotive News about the company's powertrain future. The Korean brand is hardly alone in this move towards downsizing, though, and practically every major automaker is moving in this direction, even Honda with the next Civic. According to Zuchowski, the twin-turbo V6 will make its way into the Genesis sedan in 2017 or 2018. The company is aiming for power to be on par from the luxury model's current 420-horsepower, 5.0-liter V8. The new engine should weigh less, though. The shift towards turbos is planned for the entire model lineup, not just Hyundai's higher-end vehicles. For example, the recently announced US-spec version of the 2016 Tucson now offers a boosted 1.6-liter four-cylinder with 175 hp and 195 pound-feet of torque. Several years ago, there were rumors about a possible turbocharged V6 for a future Genesis Coupe.

Hyundai spotted testing Prius-style hybrid

The Toyota Prius has become an automotive icon – maybe less so among actual automotive enthusiasts than with the public at large – to the extent that most anyone on the street would recognize its five-door hatchback form and immediately identify it as a hybrid. Little wonder that Honda tried to emulate it with the second-gen Insight, but while that didn't work out so well for Honda, it looks like Hyundai is preparing to go down the same road with a dedicated hybrid of its own. Our paparazzi on the ground in the Arctic Circle have spotted this protoytpe and tell us what we're looking at is a new Prius-fighter from the Korean automaker. Snapped up high on a transporter truck, you can see the orange high-voltage cables underneath and a label with the letters AE HEV – the latter standing, of course, for Hybrid Electric Vehicle. We wouldn't be surprised if the AE stood for Advanced Experimental or Alternative Energy or something of the sort. Tipped to be based on the same platform as the next-generation Elantra, the new Hyundai hybrid is said to pack a 1.6-liter inline-four working in parallel with an electric motor juiced by a lithium-ion battery pack. It's expected to begin production in the second half of 2016, with a plug-in and possibly other variants to follow a year to a year and a half after its initial launch.
