Hyundai recalls Santa Fe Sport for seatbelt warning light

The Basics: Hyundai will recall 34,200 examples of the 2016 and 2017 Santa Fe Sport with production dates between September 1, 2015 and February 12, 2016. The Problem: The front seats' height adjuster mechanism can damage the wiring that controls the seatbelt warning. If this occurs, then owners wouldn't get an audible reminder to buckle up. In the affected vehicles, the wires in the front seat belt buckle harnesses may be damaged by the seat's height adjuster mechanism, resulting in a failure to provide an audible warning when front seat occupants do not fasten their seat belts. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection." CONSEQUENCE: Without a warning to remind the front seat occupants that their seat belts are not buckled, they may forget to buckle their seat belt, increasing their risk of injury in the event of a crash. REMEDY: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and reroute the wires in the front seat belt buckle harnesses to their proper locations, as necessary, free of charge. Hyundai hearts House Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Caucus in Tucson promotion

Hyundai may be based in South Korea, but the automaker is touting hydrogen fuel-cell technology as an all-American benefit and is getting some help from the US government to do so. The company said this week that it's collaborating with the US Department of Energy and the House Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Caucus at promoting fuel-cell technology. The timing is good because Hyundai just started selling the first mass-produced fuel-cell vehicle sold/leased in the US (unless you count the Honda FCX Clarity, which we know Honda does). The goal for Hyundai and its public partners is to boost awareness of the benefits of fuel-cell technology (the full tank range is similar to a gas-powered vehicle without the tailpipe emissions). With enough awareness and resulting demand, the high cost of both building such vehicles and installing the refueling infrastructure needed to refuel them will theoretically get driven down. Or at least that's what Hyundai and future fuel-cell vehicle makers like Toyota, Mercedes-Benz and General Motors are shooting for. Hyundai started leasing its Tucson crossover fuel-cell vehicle in Southern California earlier this year. The company is charging $499 a month, in addition to a $2,999 down payment for the vehicle, and is allowing drivers to fuel up for no extra charge. The Basics: Hyundai will recall 155,000 examples 2011 and 2012 Elantra with production dates between October 29, 2010 and October 25, 2011. The Problem: A malfunctioning yaw sensor for the electronic stability control system can cause the application of one or more of the brakes and cut power to the engine, as well as the illumination of the ESC indicator light. Injuries/Deaths: None reported. The Fix: Dealers will check the ESC sensors and update the ESC calibration free of charge.
