No diesels in the running for 2016 Green Car Of The Year
Thu, Oct 15 2015It's a new era for the Green Car Of The Year. In the past, the theme of the award was to take a broad look at alternative powertrains and pick the best among them. "Clean diesels" from the Volkswagen group were often among the finalists and won the award twice. For the 2016 edition - which will be handed out at the LA Auto Show next month - not a single diesel made the list. There's little wonder why. Green Car Journal, which names the winner with a panel of experts, had to strip two VW brand vehicles of their past wins. The 2009 VW Jetta TDI, which won in 2008, and the 2010 Audi A3 TDI, which won in 2010, have both lost their titles now that the world knows about the "defeat devices" that VW installed in many of its TDI vehicles around the world. So, what does that leave us with for 2016? Two plug ins, a hybrid, and two gas vehicles. The two electric vehicle are the Audi A3 e-tron and the Chevy Volt, while the all-new Toyota Prius (which will come with a plug-in version later) is the lone pure hybrid. Rounding out the pack are two efficient gas models: the Hyundai Sonata and the Honda Civic. This is the tenth year for the Green Car Of The Year, and it will be interesting to see if diesels can come back into the award's good graces (for the record, no diesels were among the finalists in 2013, either) in the future. 2014 Hyundai Veloster Re:Flex brings the bling
Fri, 07 Feb 2014Despite launching in late 2011, Hyundai has managed to keep its funky Veloster hatchback relatively fresh in our minds, with the Turbo and R-Spec, several special edition models and even a cloth-roofed concept. Here at the 2014 Chicago Auto Show, we're seeing the next iteration of Veloster creativity, the limited-edition Re:Flex.
The Veloster Re:Flex isn't a hugely different car from the standard hatchback, and the theme of this car is chrome, chrome, chrome. Hyundai has added 18-inch chrome-finished wheels, chrome door handles and chrome hood accents (yep). There's also the usual Re:Flex badging on the actual hatch itself. Inside, the Re:Flex gets full leather seating, in either black or red, and the car can be purchased in a new Ice Pearl color, in addition to Century White, Vitamin C (orange), Ultra Black and Boston Red.
Hyundai is only offering the Re:Flex edition on the base Veloster, powered by a naturally aspirated 1.6-liter inline four-cylinder engine. All Re:Flex models are fitted with the company's six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (sorry, manual fans).
Hyundai bringing 1,000-hp Genesis Coupe to SEMA
Mon, 23 Sep 2013Hyundai has just unleashed its first volley at the SEMA crowd in the form of the Genesis Coupe you see above, and it's a duesy. By partnering with the powertrain gurus from Bisimoto, Hyundai has managed to cram a thousand horsepower into this highly accessorized black and blue machine, using a mill based on the naturally aspirated Genesis Coupe 3.8 R-Spec engine block.
The big powers are a pair of Bisimoto/Turbonetics BTX6462 turbochargers, which are joined by a full set of aftermarket internals that include new connecting rods, camshafts, forged pistons, fuel pump and fuel injectors, and a massive intercooler. With all that power, the chassis was going to need some updates, such as a complete roll cage and a custom coilover suspension setup.
As is expected from a SEMA show car, there is a bespoke graphics and bodywork package, highlighted by a carbon fiber hood and decklid. Check out the two images provided by Hyundai and the press release below for all the details.
