Up for auction is a 2004 Hyundai Elantra GT with 5-speed manual transmission. I am the first and only owner and have been using this vehicle for commuting. The car needs some new parts. I just bought the new 2013 Elantra GT and I am letting this car go.

The condition of the vehicle is very clean inside with minor blemishes to the interior plastic and leather upholstery (as shown in the pictures). There is some minor discolorations in the driver seat. There is an ink stain in the seat behind the driver's seat, courtesy of my daughter. There are stains on the carpeted florr mats though nothing too egregious. The car is equipped with a JVC CD / MP3 player with front auxillary input that can be used to connect an iPod/iPhone or the likes. The CD player also accepts a USB flash drive and can play MP3/VMW format files. Comes with the user manual and a remote as shown in the pictures.

On the outside, the car has a great deal of scratches consistent with the age of the car. I tried to show the most important scratches in the pictures. There is a small depression on the back close to the rear hatch lock. The car has developed some rust at the bottom edge of the right rear stop light two years ago. I stripped the paint down to the bare metal, used a body filler to repair the rusty spots and re-painted the portion of the hatchback door around the plate. You can see that I did not do a perfect job with the body filler. There is a couple of spots showing a little rust here and there that needs fixing. Nothing big. A piece of the plastic covering the grille has broken off.

Here are the items that need to be fixed / replaced:

1. All four wheels need to be replaced ASAP. There is not teeth left on the wheels.
2. The flex pipe is leaking exhaust. The flex pipe needs to replaced. The entire flex pipe and the rear catalytic converted assembly is about $150 on eBay.

Issues:
1. The up/down switch for the driver side power window is intermittent. It sometimes take a couple of presses to operate the window. All other power windows/switches are fine.
2. The passenger side map light button does not stay pressed.
3. The cover for the front visor mirror is broken.
4. The rotary fan switch is intermittent at position 4. You need to keep it somewhere in between 3-4 to set the fan speed to 4.
5. The steering wheel shakes at highway speeds past 65Miles. I am told that this is a balancing issue by a local mechanic.
6. The part securing the passenger side fog light has rusted off. The fog light is out of its socket. The other fog light is cloudy.

Maintenance:

The car has been maintained well following the maintenance schedule provided with the owner's manual (included). Most of the maintenance is done by the original dealer that I bough the card from. I did some minor maintenance items in later years.

1. Clutch has been replaced at 88K miles. The clutch is in pretty good shape at this point.
2. The radiator and all hoses has been replaced at 112K miles.
3. The timing belt has been replaced at 55K and 115K. The timing belt in this vehicle needs to be replaced at 60K intervals. So you need to replace the timing belt in 20K miles.
4. The alternator belt has been replaced very recently.
5. Front oxygen sensor has been replaced at 110Kmiles.
6. Brakes were replaced at 100Kmiles.

Hyundai Tucson 'The Walking Dead' special edition is real and wants braaaiiinnnnss

Fri, 22 Nov 2013

Hyundai's association with The Walking Dead is, for a lot of fans, limited to the spearmint-green Tucson that Rick, Darryl, Maggie and Herschel drive around on AMC's hit show. But the tie-up with the series extends beyond that, going right into the graphic novels that inspired the TV show.
In celebration of 10 years of Robert Kirkman's series of comics, Hyundai has built special edition Tucson that, unlike its previous zombie survival cars, is going to see production. "The Walking Dead" Special Edition Tucson uses the same 2.4-liter engine found in the standard CUV, with 182 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. In fact, this car is largely similar to your everyday Tucson, at least in terms of equipment.
It does add a few things which might be handy in the event of a zombie apocalypse, though. A Zombie Survival Kit, which Hyundai describes as a "Walking Dead 72-hour survivalist's backpack, a necessary item for any zombie 'prepper,'" is included, as are body decals for all four of the comic book's factions and a special splash screen on the navigation system. The exterior is finished in Ash Black and sports red accents, along with special edition badges. A cross-railed roof rack and mudguards round out the interior enhancements.

Hyundai-Kia forecasts slowest sales growth in 8 years

Thu, 02 Jan 2014

Even with the arrival of the new Hyundai Genesis Sedan (above) and the expected introduction of at least two other new vehicles in 2014, Hyundai-Kia is estimating its sales will only increase by about 4.1 percent this year. Bloomberg has found that figure, which works out to a total of 7.86 million vehicles worldwide, to be lower than average analyst estimates of eight million vehicles. If the automaker is correct, that figure will represent the most sluggish growth for the Korean brands since 2006.
Based on an exchange rate of 1,050 won to the dollar - right now it's trading at anywhere from 1,050 to 1,052 depending on where you look - Hyundai is predicting a 3.8-percent uptick for sales of 4.9 million units, while Kia is expecting a 4.7-percent uptick for sales of 2.96 million units. That exchange rate is predicted to be part of what will hamper sales this year, with a stronger South Korean won making Japanese cars more price-competitive when cross-shopped. It's unclear how Hyundai derived its exchange rate, but 1,050 won to the dollar almost matches the 52-week high for all of 2013.
The company chairman mentioned a "low growth era" in the world economy, and weaker US sales are rumored to at least part of the reason John Krafcik recently vacated the post of Hyundai Motor America CEO, a post that has been filled by executive vice president of sales, David Zuchowski. That unexpected news capped a year in which two top execs resigned over quality issues and recalls and Hyundai agreed to settle a consolidated lawsuit over inflated fuel economy ratings for $395 million.

2014 Hyundai Elantra

Mon, 23 Jun 2014

The reality of growing up and living in Detroit is an interesting one. You're essentially born with minute traces of gasoline in your veins and everyone you know is associated with the auto industry in some way. That's not an exaggeration. They might be the child of a line worker at the local auto plant, or they may hold down a job at a restaurant frequented by employees at a big supplier, but no matter what, everyone is part of the auto-industry ecosystem.
Because of this, the stories you may have heard about Detroiters and their distaste for foreign cars is, frustratingly, true. Simply put, Toyota and Honda are blatantly disliked by most, while BMW and Mercedes-Benz are merely tolerated. For a car reviewer who prides himself on making egalitarian recommendations, it's a frustrating environment to live in, particularly when friends and family ask that inevitable question - which is followed by an equally inevitable qualifier - "What should my next car be?" and "One more thing - it can't be foreign." It's this attitude that's perhaps the reason no one I know even considered buying a Hyundai Elantra.
Despite the fact that the compact sedan is built in Montgomery, AL and that Hyundai maintains a shiny, new, sprawling tech facility less than 45 minutes outside of downtown Detroit, the Elantra's status as a "foreign" car immediately precludes it from most Motown buyers' shopping lists. This is to their detriment, as I discovered during a week of testing the refreshed-for-2014 Hyundai Elantra.
