Hummer EV SUV official range announced: 3X truck tops 350 miles
Fri, Apr 21 2023The first run of GMC Hummer EVs were in one single specification: pickup truck in Edition 1 with all the off-road goodies. The most pertinent of those off-road upgrades to electric range being the 18-inch wheels with mud-terrain tires. And it was rated for 329 miles. But now, there are more Hummer variants. The pickup truck is now available with a 3X trim that comes standard with more efficient all-terrain tires wrapped around 22-inch wheels, and there's the SUV with both trims and both types of tires, not to mention a smaller battery pack. And now we have the official range estimates for them. We'll start with the Hummer EV SUV, since all of the official range ratings are new to us. The tires are the key factor, with the all-terrain equipped Edition 1 and 3X both managing 314 miles of range. Yes, this is less than even the mud-terrain-equipped truck, but that's mainly because the shorter length of the SUV means it has fewer battery cells and capacity. It has about 170 kWh of capacity versus the truck's 200+. Adding the Extreme Off-Road Package and its more aggressive tires drops range to 298 miles. The Four-Wheel-Steer system lets the 2022 GMC HUMMER EV Pickup m View 17 Photos As with the SUVs, the Hummer EV truck gets a solid range boost to 355 miles when it's not equipped with the off-road package. There's another benefit to the regular all-terrains on the Hummer EV truck: towing capacity. At 8,500 pounds, it can tow an extra 1,000 pounds over the models with the off-road package. GMC also notes that another potential benefit to the all-terrain-equipped trucks is a suspension tuned for better on-road handling. And our experience has shown that even Hummer with the off-road package isn't too shabby on pavement. Of course, skipping the off-road package will also save you some money, as will opting for the 3X trims. So unless you're really going off-road seriously, and would make regular use of the extra skid plates, under-truck camera and chunky tires, the standard suspension and tire setup really is the way to go. Mon, May 2 2016UPDATE: Tupac Shakur's Hummer blew away estimates, selling for $337,114 according to the auction site. It's been nearly 20 years since the renowned rapper Tupac Shakur was gunned down at the height of his fame. One of the last vehicles he ever purchased, this 1996 AM General Hummer in a four-door pickup configuration, is now being sold by RR Auctions. Since 1996, it hasn't covered much ground. The odometer reads just 10,101 miles. A bunch of upgrades, like driving lights, a sound system and external PA, and diamond-plate bumpers, are present and were allegedly added by Shakur. The Hummer has a 6.5-liter turbodiesel V8 and automatic transmission. According to the seller, after being owned by Shakur and then, after his death, his mother Afeni Shakur, the Hummer went through a variety of owners. This includes BET, which gave the car away during a raffle in 2003, the owners of Havenotz Entertainment, and the mother of the rapper Yaki "Prince" Kadafi who was a "godbrother" of Shakur. The included vanity plate reads "YAKNPAK", a nod to both Kadafi and Shakur. The vehicle is currently in Canada. Bidding opens on May 12th and ends on May 19th, and RR Auctions estimates it'll sell for more than $100,000. GMC Hummer EV infotainment built with Unreal Engine used by 'Fortnite' and 'Rocket League'
Wed, Oct 7 2020We're only a couple weeks away from the reveal of the GMC Hummer EV truck and SUV. And we're expecting a lot of boasting about impressive capability and unique features. What we weren't expecting was for its infotainment system to be built on a video game engine. That's the news that has come out of Epic Games, creators of Unreal Engine, the basis of the Hummer's infotainment system. If you've been an avid video gamer anytime in the last 20 years, Unreal Engine should be recognizable. The first version of it powered Epic's "Unreal" and "Unreal Tournament" games, and more recent versions power multiplayer hits such as Epic's "Fortnite" and Psyonix's "Rocket League." The engine has been licensed out to countless other game developers for titles by both indie developers and large game companies. But its use in the GMC Hummer will be the first time it has powered a production car's infotainment system. This content is hosted by a third party. Presumably it's a version of Unreal Engine 4, since Unreal Engine 5 hasn't been released yet. Also, while Epic released a trailer announcing the partnership and showcasing Unreal's 3D rendering and menu developing tools, it doesn't give us a peak at what the infotainment and instruments of the Hummer will look like. The company does tout fast boot-up times, powerful graphics, and over-the-air updates as useful features included with Unreal.
