Honda Goldwing airbag recall spreads Takata mess to motorcycles
Thu, Jun 2 2016Recall, after recall, after recall, one thing has remained constant in the Takata airbag quagmire: The disaster has been confined to the four-wheeled realm. Not any longer. The Honda Goldwing, the first and so far the only motorcycle equipped with an airbag from the factory, has been recalled. A total of 2,701 motorcycles are involved in this recall, spanning the 2006 through 2010 model years, and only in certain regions. It's sort of confusing, so we suggest perusing the official notice below for all the details. But the gist is the same as ever – Takata's airbag inflators can rupture, potentially propelling shards of metal shrapnel at the vehicle's occupants. Or in this case, the motorcycle riders. Only Goldwings sold or operated in areas with high humidity or frequent temperature cycling are being recalled at this time. No schedule for repairs and replacements has yet been announced, but owners are invited to call Honda at 1-866-784-1870 for more information. As always, you can check the recall status of your vehicle with NHTSA's lookup tool using your car or bike's VIN. Carjacking attempt foiled by pesky manual transmission
Thu, Oct 20 2016A St. Louis man lucked out last week when a pair of carjackers abandoned his Nissan Altima because it had a manual transmission. According to KMOV, Dustin French was on his way back to his Benton Park home from a gas station around 11 PM on October 13th. When French pulled up to the curb outside of his home a silver Honda Accord quickly pulled in behind him. A passenger then hopped out, approached him, and flashed a gun. "A car came up right behind sort of half parallel parked behind me. A passenger got out with a firearm, told me to get out of my car and empty my pockets," French told the news station. Since he was alone at night and the nearest streetlight was burned out, French decided that discretion was the better part of valor and did as he was told. "All I got out luckily were my keys and I said what do I do now. I was asking for orders," French told the station. "He said get up and walk away. Face away and keep walking." French complied with the carjacker's demands. "I'm glad I didn't panic or threaten violence or make any quick moves," French said. "Kept my wits about me as best as I could. Asked thieves for instructions on what to do to prevent harm to myself." But then a strange thing happened. The carjackers apparently left French's car behind and took off without stealing anything. French told KMOV he believes that they did so because his car has a manual transmission and the gunman, who St. Louis Police say was in his late teens or early-20s, couldn't drive one. Thankfully, French wasn't hurt and his Nissan is still safely in his possession. Related Video: News Source: KMOV Auto News Weird Car News Honda Nissan Safety carjacking stick shift accord
Honda Accord barely edges Toyota Prius as California's best-selling car
Wed, Feb 18 2015The Toyota Prius definitely still matters, at least to car buyers in California. The long-lived hybrid was the state's second-bestselling vehicle in 2014 by moving 71,210 units across all of its variants, including the Prius C. The Toyota was the leader there in 2012 and 2013 but lost the sales crown this time – just barely – to the Honda Accord, which sold 71,578 examples. The results in the Golden State illustrate just how different the auto market there is compared to the rest of the country. Prius sales slumped last year nationwide with a drop of 11.5 percent to 207,372 examples sold. However, according to the LA Times, the model's numbers ticked up two percent in California in 2014. Taken by itself, the standard hatchback model would have been the sixth-bestseller there, with 39,036 units purchased. While the Toyota showed modest growth, it wasn't enough to fend off the Accord's 17 percent year-over-year jump in the state, though. According to the Los Angeles Times, the rest of the California top ten included the Honda Civic, Toyota Camry, Corolla, Ford F-Series, CR-V, Nissan Altima, Sentra and Chevrolet Silverado, respectively. That list was quite a departure from the nationwide bestsellers in 2014, which was led by the F-Series, Silverado and Ram pickups. The Camry was the country's foremost car on the list in fourth place overall to beat the Accord in fifth. The Prius didn't break into the ten biggest sellers in the US last year.
