I bought this Del Sol several years ago for my son and girlfriend to take a cross country trip.  The only requirements that we had were that it be economical and reliable.  Having a Del Sol myself,  which I wasn't willing to give up for six weeks during the summer, I was leaning toward finding one for him.  Well, I found this one a few hours away from home.  It had lots of new parts, all genuine Honda brand.  The man I bought it from was the third owner.  He was very anal about replacing parts.  He would replace things before they were needed so that he wouldn't get stuck out on the road.  All of the hoses, belts  and even the fuel pump, which is not an easy job, had been replaced.  So, I felt that the car would be reliable.  And reliable it has been!  My son put 7700 miles on it in six weeks.  He got 38 - 40 MPG.  And, spent a total of $85 in repairs!  The flange between the exhaust pipe and catalytic converter came loose, so he had to have it repaired.  Our search for an economical and reliable car was a success!  It was such a great little car, I had to keep it around for a few more years.  I've been driving it late into the fall and early in the spring when my Del Sol has been in storage.  And my son and girlfriend have been using it periodically.  But, now it is time to let it go.  I have purchased a couple more toys and I'm out of room.
Now for the condition:  Overall,  for the year and mileage, it is in good condition.  There is the usual rust over the right rear wheel and in front of both rear wheels.  Not bad, and could be easily fixed.  Otherwise the paint is pretty good, a few dings.  The tires are good, have about 12,000 miles on them.  The interior shows some wear, but overall in good shape.  It has the original red stripe floor mats, which are hard to find.  The rear window does not work.  Ac blows cold.  The engine runs great.  The tranny shifts fine.  I recently put new brakes and rotors on the rear, new muffler and the weatherstripping around the rear window.  This is a great little car and has lots of miles left in it!

How to charge up your BMW i3 with a Honda

Sat, Sep 13 2014

Behold a cheaper version of BMW's range extender for its i3 plug-in. And it's brought to you by ... Honda? Sort of, if you take the approach that Gadget Review took when it looked for an alternative to ponying up the $4,000 or so for the gas-powered i3 range extender that comes from the factory. What was procured was a Honda portable generator for Home Depot for the experiment, which involved gassing the generator up in a parking lot, plugging in the i3 and going out for a cup of coffee. The result was that, after about a half-hour of charging, the i3 picked up about four miles of driving range. Not exactly revolutionary but it least a bit instructive. And given that Honda generators start at about $800, the idea, while clunky, is potentially cash-saving. Gadget Review briefly took the experiment one-step further by trying to run the generator inside the back of the car and plugging in, complete with a rigged-up ventilation system, but the host thought better of it once he realized that there'd be suffocation involved. Why this was never tried on the Nissan Leaf, we'll never know. Check out Gadget Review's five-minute video below.

Six 'shut up and take my money' cars

Tue, 11 Nov 2014

Any time you see this iconic moment in pop culture - Shut up and take my money! - posted in response to a new car reveal, rumor for an upcoming model or even lip-service to a vehicle that should exist, you can bet there's some intrinsic good in the idea. Though depending on the person offering up the cash, that good could take the form of extraordinary form, functionality, weight savings, power, handling, etc. You get the idea.
In fact, when I first proposed this list, I reached out to the Autoblog staff to help me brainstorm. Here are some of the ideas they offered up that I ultimately didn't use: Jaguar XE Coupe, Pagani Huayra Roadster, Mercedes-Benz S-Class "parade car" (cabriolet), Morgan 3-Wheeler with Ducati V-twin, Ford Transit Connectamino (pickup), Mercedes CLA63 AMG, Ford Fusion 5.0, BMW i8 Spyder, Lexus RC-F Shooting Brake, Volvo XC90 Polestar. Oh, and things we collectively wanted to stick Dodge's Hellcat in were almost as numerous as models that Fiat Chrysler Automotive currently makes (though none quite so compelling as the Grand Cherokee you see above.)
Ultimately though, while I used a couple of ideas from my colleagues, the list of cars I'd shell out for unquestionably is very personal. Though it isn't complete, what follows is a selection of cars whose very existence would prompt me - or the trust-fund-baby versions of me - to utter without hesitation: "Shut up and take my money."
