Rare First Generation, First Year 1984 Honda CRX. Great on gas, but even more fun to drive. Please see the MPG pic that I copied from a website to see the fuel efficiency. In practice, what do I really get? Holding it at 75 mph on the highway I have gotten 50mpg on every trip that I have taken it on. At 65, which is the speed this was rated at, I may just get 57, I don't know... she cruises at 75 so no reason to test her at 65.

History: This was owned by an elderly couple who towed it behind their RV for years and rarely drove it. So while the miles on the odometer are high at 291, it drives like one with 120k miles on it. I test drove several of these with 100-140,000 on them before I found this one and this one was tighter than any of the others - so I bought it. I have been told that when these are towed they register miles and this couple drove their RV around for years, living it all over the US so they put tons of miles on this merely by towing it. At some point the AC condenser in the front of the car started to leak, it leak onto the body of the car below and behind the bumper and sort of caused a rust issue on that part - see the close up picture that has rust on it. Otherwise the car is clean from rust. So they took out the entire AC, hoses, Fan, Compressor and tossed them as they where not touring Arizona and figured they did not need the AC. I have purchased a new condenser, new Compressor, used AC fan, used hoses and used compressor mounting bracket but have not installed them. Basically, I have bought all the AC parts that were removed at a total cost of 400.00. But you get to put them in if you want AC.

They sold it to a guy in 2011 who was driving down and road and saw a for sale sign on it. He was not into CRXs at all, but saw it and decided to give it a test drive. One drive was all it took and he was in love since it handled so nicely and was so tight. So he bought it from them and put new tires on it. The fiberglass fenders and front fiberglass panel in front of the hood were cracked when he got it, so he sanded the paint off at the cracks with the idea of repairing those fiberglass parts. But then he got a job out of state, piled all his stuff into his new 1 ton truck and since he could not take this CRX, sold it to me.

I bought the car in January of 2012 after looking about 5 months for one of these that was good enough and stock to polish up into my new baby. But then a month later I stumbled across another car I always wanted, a first generation Honda Prelude. I stumbled upon a mint 1980 Prelude in copper /gold and could not resist. Then, since most times that I go some where I have to take my twin girls, I ended up taking the Prelude because they actually fit into those tiny seats in back, and so the CRX hardly got used. So that is why I am selling it. I have a 3 car garage, bought my wife a new car recently and just don't have the garage space for one of my cars, so one of them has to go and since this is the least used, it is the one on the auction block, even though it is way more fun to drive and gets way better mileage than my Prelude.

Things I have done to it: I replaced the broken cardboard that sits on top of the spare tire with a 1/8 thick piece of plywood that will last forever. I replaced the clutch, rear main seal and oil pan gasket about 3 months ago. Tires have about 3,000 miles on them, so pretty much new.

The valve cover gasket seal is leaking. When I replaced the clutch I wanted to replace the valve cover gasket, but they sent the wrong one to me, so by the time I got the right gasket, clutch was in and I was driving it. So the valve cover gasket still needs to be replaced and a new one is included.

Mechanically this car runs great. She starts beautifully-  even though I only drove her about every 2 weeks this winter and at 5,000 feet where I live it would be 15 degrees out sometimes when I started her, she always started on the first turn of the key and never stalls even when she is not warmed up. Steering is tight, motor is smooth, shifting is faultless. Does not pull to the side when you hit the brakes. Steering is dead on center and she does not pull to the side. Plugs are perfect. Does not burn oil. Radiator and coolant system are perfect. There seems to be a tranny leak on the point where the shift rod goes into the tranny, see the close up pic of the boot with the orange silicon on it. That dust boot was trashed, I have not been able to find a new one yet, so just sealed up as good as I could. But that is not the cause of the tranny leak, the o-ring that seals the rod from the tranny must need replacing. I actually just noticed that today when I put her on top of my pit so that I could take pictures for you of the bottom of the engine.

The entire car is stock, including the interior except that the rear hatch carpet does not look original to me, and it is not great, so would replace that. The front carpet is okay as seen in the photos. but to really make her nice a carpet kit for 220.00 would be the way to go. The passenger seat is perfect, the drivers seat has some tears on top of the seat as seen in the photos, but the seats are really amazing for this year. The doors need to be closed firmly as the little plastic pieces in the lock that push against the bar on the door jam have broken off, which always happens on these cars. The easy fix is to just cut new plastic pieces and slide them in, the are 1/4 inch little pieces that slide into the metal part of the lock. Door panels are great. Dash is awesome and all the heater controls, AC controls, vents, etc. are in great shape with no broken air vents or anything like that. The rear view mirror mounting bracket cracked long ago and so someone drilled the mirror and bolted it on directly as you can see in the mirror photo.

Ebay will only allow me to load 24 of the 53 pictures that I took, so email me for more.

The front fiberglass panel is available on ebay for about 100.00. The fenders are totally fixable. She needs a good polish to bring out the shine, but she is not bad as you can see in the photos, though there is one large oxidization about 3 inches in diameter on the top of the roof. There is rust where the CIVIC logo goes on the back right of the hatch. I removed the logo so that water would not get held under it and continue the rust, so that is the only area that you have a bit of rust to clean up and it is minor.

The plastic trim that fits along the top of the door by the raingutters is toasted on the drivers side and that needs to be removed and painted black. The passenger side trim looks to have fallen off long ago and was repainted at some point - see pics of both sides.

I purchased some matching touch up paint in can and with brush for about 30.00 that is included from a place that specializes in matching Honda colors. See the pics of all the AC stuff you are getting, the condenser is in the big box. Let me know if you have any questions. Feel free to call at 760-420-5648. I have a lot more pictures, email if you want to see more.

PICKUP/DELIVERY: I can easily meet you in Phoenix at the airport if you want to fly in to pick this up. I may be able to deliver this for a fee that covers my time and return ticket, contact me and we can talk about that. I would have not concerns about driving this across the country.

Normally when I sell stuff on ebay, I don't set a reserve cause I just want to clear the space, but this car I did put a reserve as I do like the car and don't mind if I don't sell her, in which case I will just finish her up in my spare time. The reserve price is more than fair based on what I have seen these sell for on ebay, so good luck!

Honda working with new supplier Autoliv for Takata inflator recall

Thu, Dec 4 2014

Takata is fighting against US regulators over whether to expand its airbag inflator recall nationwide, but the affected automakers are continuing to broaden their own campaigns to get these vehicles fixed. Honda is the first company to take the bold move of partnering with another supplier for its replacement parts. It just announced plans to work with Autoliv to create components for models needing repaired in the US. "The agreement is made in order to meet the expanded supply of inflators needed by Honda and is subject to definitive documentation," Autoliv said in a statement. The company plans to add the extra capacity for these replacement parts at its existing factories, and deliveries are expected to begin in six months. The decision to switch suppliers was quite surprising because the choice was largely considered impractical previously. Automakers believed that changing manufacturers could take as long as a year or more to implement. However, Autoliv apparently found a way to accelerate that. According to Reuters, Honda said at a hearing in the House of Representatives on December 3 (pictured above) that it was in talks with Autoliv and another supplier called Daicel about building more inflators. The extra parts are sure to come in handy for Honda, as it is now officially expanding its driver side inflator recall nationwide. Although, that that option was already available to any concerned drivers who asked for the remedy. Even with added capacity, Takata had estimated it would take two years to manufacturer enough replacements to fix all of the affected vehicles from all of the automakers. Scroll down to read Autoliv's statement on its new role. Autoliv to supply replacement airbag inflators to be used by Honda (Stockholm, December 3, 2014) – – – Autoliv, Inc. (NYSE: ALV, and SSE: ALIV sdb), the worldwide leader in automotive safety, will supply replacement airbag inflators to be used by Honda Motor Company in support of the ongoing field action initiatives in the United States. The agreement is made in order to meet the expanded supply of inflators needed by Honda and is subject to definitive documentation. In order to be able to meet increased demand, Autoliv will build additional inflator capacity in its existing manufacturing facilities. Deliveries are estimated to commence after a period of about six months from today.

Honda reveals three new turbo VTEC engines, including Civic Type R 2.0L

Tue, 19 Nov 2013

It's fair to say that in recent years, Honda has been viewed as a laggard when it comes to engine and gearbox development, seemingly missing the boat on direct-injection, forced-induction and high gear-count transmissions, among other things. But under its Earth Dreams banner, the Japanese automaker is showing new vigor, with the latest proof being this trio of just-announced powerplants.
Measuring 1.0-liters, 1.5-liters and 2.0-liters in displacement, this array of three- and four-cylinder engines boasts turbocharging and direct-injection along with the latest iteration of Honda's famed VTEC variable valve timing hardware. "Most suitable for small-to-medium-sized vehicles," the largest engine is said to be good for more than 276 horsepower and will slot into the eagerly awaited Civic Type R, iconic red valve cover and all.
Unfortunately, few other details about the hot Civic's engine or any of the others are being made public at this time, and there's no official word about the engines coming to North American in the Type R or any other model. Given that all the engines are complaint with stringent Euro 6 emissions standards, they figure to be clean enough, and Honda says that these have been developed as global powerplants, so we'd be shocked if they didn't come ashore in new or updated products over the next few years... even if they leave the CTR on the boat.

Car and Driver lists 10Best for 2013, same as it ever was

Wed, 05 Dec 2012

Forgive us for having the distinct feeling of déjà vu, but it certainly feels like we've been here before. By that we are referring Car and Driver and the announcement of its annual 10Best vehicles for 2013. To be sure, it's an impressive selection of cars that combine heart-pounding performance and frugal sensibilities, but it also represents something of a broken record on the part of C/D. We're not so sure that's a flaw, though, as the resulting list is tough to argue with.
Vehicles like the Ford Mustang, Porsche Boxster, and BMW 3 Series have maintained their high-horsepower spots on this list for several years now. Even on the more practical and nimble end, the Honda Accord, Honda Fit and Mazda Miata have not budged. These continued spots are even in light of redesigns for some vehicles such as the Accord, Boxster and 3 Series.
In fact, the only newcomer to the 10Best list this year are the Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ twins, which knocked out the Cadillac CTS-V. We think it would have been a huge misstep to have excluded the FR-S/BRZ, even in light of the supercharged Caddy's lamentable departure from 10Best.
