All Honda Accord Hybrid production moving to Japan
Fri, Apr 10 2015The Honda Accord Hybrid will no longer be made in Marysville, OH. Honda has announced that the model – as well as the Accord Plug-In – will now be made in Sayama, Japan, where both have been built since 2013. With production moving so far away from the US market, the costs for these vehicles could increase, but there's no official word on that from Honda. Angie Nucci, spokesperson for Honda North America, did not discount the idea but just told AutoblogGreen that, "We don't have details on pricing to share at this point." Sales of the green-minded Accords are down so far this year. Through the end of March, the PHEV sold just 45 units, a 35-percent drop from the 69 sold in the first three months of 2014. Things weren't as bad for the non-plug Accord Hybrid, which has sold 2,585 units so far this year compared to 2,781 last year, a seven-percent drop. Honda, Hyundai and Kia get best word-of-mouth recommendations in US
Mon, 09 Dec 2013Forget advertising, incentives and, yes, even our excellently crafted vehicle reviews, sometimes the best way for automakers to sell cars is still good ol' fashioned word of mouth. In an attempt to measure this "word of mouth" power, The Boston Consulting Group, a management consulting firm, has created a new study called the Brand Advocacy Index (BAI). The index takes a look at how various industries perform from person to person. Those industries include automotive, smartphones, grocery, mobile telecommunications and banking.
The study polled more than 32,000 individuals across Europe and in the US to come up with the top 55 brands in these various industries. On the automotive side of things, the top brands in the US were Honda, Hyundai and Kia, all tied at 63 percent. On a global scale, Volkswagen and Toyota scored the highest with a 65-percent BAI rating (both in France). The average BAI for auto industry players tallied 50 percent.
As for companies in other industries, Apple's iPhone was the index's top-rated smartphone, Trader Joe's was the highest recommended grocery store, Virgin was sat atop the mobile telecom industry and USAA was the top retail bank. Scroll down for the full press release on the new study.
Acura organizes new business division to confront falling sedan sales
Wed, 26 Feb 2014Honda and Acura North America have announced a major restructuring of operations in hopes of turning around Acura's flagging business. For 2013, sales for Acura's sedans dropped 10.4 percent, while its CUV sales grew by 21 percent. The newly formed Acura Business Planning Office will attempt to right the ship.
As part of the restructuring, Acura is promoting Erik Berkman from President of Honda R&D Americas to lead a new division called the Acura Business Planning Office. Berkman has been with Honda since 1982 and led development of the 2006 Accord. He was also the first US engineer to head North American research and development and has been head of Honda Performance Development since 2008. "Erik's appointment to the new Acura Business Planning Office is a clear indication of the high priority we place on Acura," said Honda spokesperson Jeffrey Smith to Automotive News.
American Honda Motor President and CEO Tetsuo Iwamura is also going to be working to improve the business. He has been elected chairman of American Honda's board, and has simultaneously taken the new position of Corporate Brand Officer to improve the management of the company's brands.
