Genesis won't launch only EVs after 2025, plans a range of hybrids instead

Tue, Jul 16 2024

Corroborating an earlier report, Genesis confirmed it's developing hybrid technology it plans to roll out across its range. The brand initially detoured gasoline-electric drivetrains to focus on EVs, but it realized its target audience is more open to going hybrid than to going electric. Speaking to Top Gear, company boss Mike Song confirmed the move on the sidelines of the Goodwood Festival of Speed. "Five years back, we anticipated that the EV era would arrive very quickly, and we really wanted to be a leader and a disruptor in the EV space. Electrification is still our vision. We still have 100%-electrified vehicles, but the market and the customers now want hybrid more than EV," he observed. His team's goal is to bring hybrid models to the market "as soon as possible." He stopped short of revealing which nameplate will inaugurate the hybrid system; regardless, it won't be the last. Song told Top Gear that "as many models as possible" will be offered with a hybrid option. Although it's not official, the aforementioned report sheds light on what the first hybrid Genesis could be powered by. Development work reportedly started in 2023, and the system is allegedly built around a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. It's likely not a plug-in system; it's either a 48-volt mild-hybrid setup or a standard hybrid drivetrain. It's too early to tell whether Genesis will ultimately offer different hybrid systems. Genesis could launch its first hybrid in 2025, so likely as a 2026 model. If that's accurate, it means the Hyundai-owned company's plan to launch exclusively electric cars starting in 2025 has changed. Nothing is official, but we wouldn't be surprised: softening demand for EVs in key markets, including ours, has convinced several carmakers to backpedal on previously-announced plans to go electric-only. Cadillac notably admitted that gasoline-powered cars will be sold alongside EVs" for a number of years" after pledging to go fully electric in 2030.

Refreshed 2026 Genesis Electrified G80 greets the public in Busan, Korea

Sat, Jun 29 2024

Genesis made sure to spread the word about its virtual high-performance concept called X Gran Racer VGT designed for Gran Turismo that debuted at the 2024 Busan International Mobility Show. Turns out that elsewhere on the floor, Genesis launched its updated Electrified G80 sedan. This refresh comes seven months after Genesis showed the updated internal-combustion-powered G80 in Korea, bringing mostly cosmetic and comfort updates as well as an upgrade for the powertrain. The automaker extended the wheelbase by 5.1 inches, adding most of that room to the second row. The extra space permits a slightly larger battery pack, going from 87.2 kWh to 95.4 kWh. We'll find out how many miles that adds to the current car's 282-mile range when Genesis brings the car here; the sedan being given a 2026-model-year designation makes that timing pretty fuzzy. The roomier rear quarters deliver a second perk for those being driven, since they get new VIP seats with leg rests and a memory function, and an EasyClose system to haul the doors shut with push buttons. Genesis has also put a deployable curtain ahead of the back window, although it's not clear if that will be standard or optional equipment assuming the feature makes it here.  Elsewhere, starting at the front, the Micro Lens Array headlights that grace the refreshed gas-engined G80 appear next to the subtly reshaped crest grille. Inside that frontispiece, the charge plug door is now powered, a feature we would have expected on the sedan at launch three years ago. Below, a revised lower intake terminates at both ends with in a set of doubled-up, chrome-lined brackets. In back, designers smoothed the rear bumper and reworked the chrome trim lines that start at the rear wheel arches and run around the back of the sedan. The car rests on a set of new 19-inch wheels, too. Inside, the updates we've seen in the G80 like the dished, three-spoke steering wheel and 27-inch OLED display. The car's expected to launch in its home market in August, we'll look for news on our market after that.

Genesis X Gran Racer VGT concept unveiled for Gran Turismo

Thu, Jun 27 2024

Hyundai-owned Genesis now has another supercar in its portfolio — if you play Gran Turismo, that is. The brand traveled to the 2024 Busan International Mobility Show held in South Korea to unveil a virtual high-performance concept called X Gran Racer VGT designed for gaming. The low-slung coupe was developed as a follow-up to the X Gran Berlinetta unveiled in December 2023, but it's part of the company's new Magma range of performance cars which explains the eye-catching orange paint. While the two cars are clearly related, the X Gran Racer VGT gets a more muscular-looking body kit characterized by a bigger front splitter, new side skirts, a massive rear wing and an air diffuser. In the real world, the X Gran Berlinetta could pass as the street-legal model while the X Gran Racer VGT would be the track-only model.  Both cars share a basic cabin layout, but the Gran Racer features carbon fiber trim, a racing steering wheel with three dials, and a slanted center console with a series of toggle switches. Genesis also added a fully integrated roll cage and stronger crossbeams in the doors. Power comes from a gasoline-electric hybrid system that consists of a front-mid-mounted V6 engine fitted with an electric supercharger and a front-mounted electric motor. This is the same drivetrain that was fitted to the X Gran Berlinetta but it's considerably more powerful: its total output checks in at 1,540 horsepower and 1,051 pound-feet of torque, up from 1,071 and 986, respectively, in the earlier concept. Genesis says that the X Gran Racer VGT will appear in a Gran Turismo game, though a timeline hasn't been released yet. These are the cars being discontinued for 2024 and beyond

Fri, Jun 21 2024

While we get new and updated car models every year, its inevitable that we'll need to say goodbye to some nameplates as well. This time around, it feels like we have confirmation or reports of an unusually large number of vehicles being discontinued in 2024 and the coming years.  We shouldn't be surprised. A large number of automakers are approaching their various target dates for electrification of their fleets. As such, some beloved internal combustion cars are going away, sometimes with appropriate fanfare like special editions. Others are slinking away quietly, killed by slowing sales and changing consumer trends. Of course, the end of production doesn't necessarily mean permanent death. Some of these models could be resurrected in later years ... and probably as an EV. With that in mind, here are the vehicles that are being discontinued in 2024 and beyond.   Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio and Stelvio Quadrifoglio Alfa Romeo ended the production of its combustion-only Quadrifoglio models in April 2024 as the Italian automaker moves toward an electrified future. This isn't the end of the Quadrifoglio entirely, though, with Larry Dominique, Alfa Romeo senior vice president and head of North America, writing, "I look forward to presenting the next chapter in the four-leaf clover’s journey."   Chevrolet Camaro GM is ending production of the Chevy Camaro after 2024, but is sending it off in style with a CollectorÂ’s Edition. WouldnÂ’t it be cool, though, if Chevy brought it back as an EV?   Chevrolet Malibu Rumors of its demise have been around for a while, but now itÂ’s official. GM will end production of the Chevy Malibu in November of 2024. The assembly line in Kansas will be retooled to build the replacement for the Chevy Bolt.   Dodge Durango The three-row Durango is slated to be replaced by the Stealth nameplate after 2024. The Durango name could make a comeback later, according to rumors, on a body-on frame SUV based on the Jeep WagoneerÂ’s platform.   Ford Edge This is the last year for the Edge in the U.S., with the final unit rolling off the assembly line in April. On sale since 2007, the Edge topped 100,000 sales in all but three full years of production.   Ford Escape Newly refreshed for the 2023 model year, FordÂ’s popular Escape compact SUV is reportedly taking its leave in 2025 in order to usher in — you guessed it — an EV in its place.

2025 Genesis GV80 priced in the middle of the luxury SUV coupe market

Fri, Jun 14 2024

Finally, anyone with an eye on the 2025 Genesis GV80 Coupe knows how much to put away for purchase. There will be two trims offered for the racy kin of the standard GV80, distinguished by engine output and a slight amount of standard equipment. The GV80 Coupe 3.5T AWD is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 making 375 horsepower, and the GV80 Coupe 3.5 e-Supercharger AWD making 409 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque. MSRPs for the two after the $1,350 destination charge are: GV80 Coupe 3.5T AWD: $81,300 GV80 Coupe 3.5 e-Supercharger AWD: $87,100 For the e-Supercharger trim, the extensive list of standard features on the entry trim is lengthened with the addition of carbon fiber trim, alloy pedals, 22-inch alloy wheels instead of the lower trim's 20-inchers, and quad muffler tips. Both Coupes can be painted in a Bering Blue exterior color that won't be available on the regular GV80. Interior color combinations include Ultramarine Blue with Orange Stitch, Smoky Green over Vanilla Beige, Obsidian Black with Gray Stitch, and Obsidian Black over Sevilla Red. The MSRPs make the Coupe almost $6,000 more expensive than the entry-level square-body 2025 GV80, the 3.5T Advanced. Looking around the segment, the entry-level Audi Q8 with 335 hp establishes the baseline in the luxury SUV coupe market, starting at $74,895. At the upper end, of course, the 384-hp Porsche Cayenne Coupe starts at $91,795. In between, the GV80 Coupe costs about $4,500 more than the BMW X6 xDrive40i, about $9,500 less than the Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe.    Start comparing like-for-like equipment, however, and the Genesis points its nose at the value end of the segment. With the Audi Q8, a buyer would need move up to the $82,995 Prestige trim to get features like Bang & Olufsen audio, heated and cooled front seats, and Remote Park Assist when the entry GV80 Coupe comes with B&O audio, climate-friendly thrones, and its own Remote Park Assist. On the BMW, attempting to match the GV80 Coupe's base spec will quickly surpass the $4,500 difference thanks to necessary options like the $3,600 Executive Package to get the head-up display, soft-close doors, and premium audio, the $900 Parking Assistant Professional, and $1,000 Anthracite Headliner. Genesis says the 2025 GV80 Coupe will begin arriving at dealers sometime this summer.

Here are all the EVs with 800V charging available in 2024

Fri, May 31 2024

As technology advances, electric cars are improving their fast-charging times. That means less time spent waiting at a DC public charger when you’re out on the road. While Level 3 chargers used to provide a maximum of 150 kilowatts of power, 350-kW chargers are become more common, making for super-fast charging Â… if your car is capable of taking advantage of it. So how do automakers improve the charging speed of their EV batteries? Some are turning to higher voltage, specifically 800V charging. What's the difference between 800-volt charging and 400-volt charging? So how does 800V charging improve upon the more common 400V EVs? Put simply, the higher the voltage, the less amperage (current) it requires to charge. In other words, with more voltage, you get more wattage (power, aka charge rate) from the same amperage (current). 800V architecture is also more efficient, with less electrical resistance, so it can use thinner cables and smaller, lighter components while needing less cooling. The tradeoff is that it is more costly, and guess who that cost gets passed on to. While automakers don't break down their pricing to show how much more you're paying for that 800V system, you'll just have to evaluate any potential purchases as a whole, and make your decision based on overall pricing of the vehicle. Thankfully, the 800V EVs on sale now are generally ones we like. Now, 800V charging capability doesn't necessarily mean an EV has 800V vehicle architecture. For instance, the GMC Hummer EV and Chevy Silverado EV operate at 400V, but with their dual battery packs, can switch to 800V when charging by temporarily connecting those packs in series. Currently, there are only a handful of EVs available with 800V charging. But if you are going to find yourself taking longer trips in your EV and using DC fast chargers more often, you might want to consider choosing one with this faster charging capability. With that in mind, these are the EVs available with 800V charging, either on sale now or coming in 2024. 800-volt EVs available in 2024 Audi E-Tron GT Chevrolet Silverado EV Genesis GV60 Genesis Electrified G80 Genesis Electrified GV70 GMC Hummer EV Pickup GMC Hummer EV SUV GMC Sierra EV* Hyundai Ioniq 5 Hyundai Ioniq 6 Kia EV6 Kia EV9 Lotus Eletre* Lotus Emeya* Lucid Air Lucid Gravity* Porsche Macan Electric* Porsche Taycan Ram 1500 REV* Tesla Cybertruck *Coming later in 2024 Green Audi Chevrolet Genesis GMC Hyundai Kia Lotus Porsche Tesla Electric Lucid EV charging

Genesis reportedly close to a deal to buy e-motors from Lucid

Wed, May 29 2024

South Korea's Sisa Journal (translated), via the site Eletric-Vehicles, reports that Hyundai Group luxury brand Genesis and Lucid Motors are in the final stages of working out a deal for the former to buy electric motors from the latter. If a deal does go through, it would be Lucid's second motor supply arrangement after agreeing to terms with Aston Martin almost exactly a year ago, or third if you count the front power units Lucid built for the Formula E race series. This is rumor until confirmed, though. When Sisa Journal asked Hyundai about the plans, an automaker rep replied with the expected, "I can't confirm it." We know Hyundai's throwing huge resources at developing in-house platforms and motors, so why would it potentially make a deal with Lucid? SJ says Genesis is aiming to release the production version of the Genesis X Convertible Concept onto the market by 2026. That's the droptop company execs reportedly previewed to dealers in January 2023 with Bentley in its sights. Now only two years away, SJ writes that Genesis saw the finish line looming and decided that "application of Lucid's high-performance electric motors is relatively efficient in terms of time and cost." The fact that Lucid's motors have proved themselves in terms of refinement, range, and output in a luxury segment where Genesis wants to play would also work in favor of a theoretical collaboration. The report also said part of the fine-toothed work includes "ironing out details such as the pricing of the electric motors and the specific models they will be integrated into," hinting the power units could end up in more than just the convertible. There's supposedly a little backstory to this, with Hyundai Group chairman Chung-Eui-sun and CEO Jang Jae-hoon visiting Lucid headquarters in California earlier this year, and the Lucid Air and coming Gravity SUV spotted on South Korean roads. The Lucid sightings in Asia could be unrelated to this report, but tied to another South Korean connection. Via the Lucid Owners forum, local wires say Lucid is signed up to buy electronic components from Korean company HL Group that will enable autonomous features on the Gravity, such as radar and cameras, as well as "the virtual engine sound system" audible at urban speeds.   Related Video

Genesis Neolun concept reportedly becoming GV90 electric SUV

Mon, May 27 2024

The Korean Car Blog has all kinds of info on what's happening at the top of the Genesis lineup in the next couple of years. The biggest news starts with the Neolun concept Genesis debuted at the New York Auto Show. That's going to turn into a GV90 flagship SUV in early 2026, all-electric, of course, since Genesis so far remains committed to new models being EV-only after 2025. TKCB says this will be the first vehicle to come out of the Hyundai Group's new plant in Ulsan, Korea dedicated to electric vehicles. We're told that Genesis successfully lobbied the mothership to move the GV90 upscale from its original luxury segment, so now the SUV's being benchmarked against the Bentley Bentayga, Range Rover and Rolls-Royce Cullinan. The Korean brand spent much of last year putting its sights on such super-luxe rides, from rumors about a production version of the Genesis X Convertible concept to its One of One program launch in Dubai.   In New York, we made note of Neolun features like the coach doors, the large, flexible infotainment screen that could be unfurled from the instrument panel, and swiveling front seats. Genesis hinted that some of the Neolun's intriguing design elements could make production, TKCB believes coach doors will be one of them. Supposedly, a few months after the launch of the standard GV90 in the U.S. around June 2026, Genesis will produce a limited-edition trim with coach doors and other exclusive touches.  The doors are reportedly possible thanks to the Hyundai's new electric vehicle platform called "eM" and its new electrical architecture and modular motors. This will eventually replace the e-GMP platform current Hyundai Group products are built on and enable vehicle features such as "a pop-up display, a swivel seat in the first row, a long-sliding seat in the second row, a built-in air purifier, [Level 3+] autonomous driving, Remote Smart Parking Assist 3 (RSPA3)," OTA updates for vehicle control modules, and AI-supported real-time battery diagnostics. Hyundai brought some battery development in-house, the eM architecture could be the first beneficiary of that by utilizing a lithium-iron-phosphate chemistry in cell-to-pack (CtP) battery technology.

2025 Genesis GV80 First Drive: It's what's inside that counts

Tue, May 14 2024

FORT WORTH – The 2025 Genesis GV80 represents the fifth model year for the luxury SUV, and it's getting its first major refresh. Though "major" is very much relative. This year's updates mainly boil down to styling and some feature updates. What was done to the interior in particular has made it better than ever, even class-leading. Most of the rest, however, is the same as it ever was, which is still good, but we wish the mechanical bits had been given the same sort of sprucing up as the surface-level details. The exterior changes are mighty light. The front grille mesh now has double bars to match the lights and fender accents. Those headlights have an array of small LEDs now instead of only a couple LEDs per unit. The front bumper gets a pseudo-skid plate garnish on the lower edge, and the rear bumper loses its exhaust cutouts, leaving vestigial mesh in place at each end, still with the vague shape of the Genesis grille. But the GV80 remains an elegant-looking SUV with its long arcing lines. And if you get up close, you can really appreciate the new, all-metal hood badge with the etched guilloche-style detailing. The 2025 GV80 interior is a much bigger deal. The dash has been significantly revamped with a new 27-inch OLED screen encompassing both the instruments and infotainment. It's silky-smooth and crisp, though the light beige graphics lack contrast and aren't quite as easy to read at a glance as your typical light text and dials on a dark background. We appreciate that Hyundai has kept the redundant infotainment control setup featuring both touchscreen and rotary controller on the center console. The controller itself is new, however, with a more tactile and responsive knob replacing the original, iPod-like disk. Both it and the shifter dial also benefit from "crystal-like" surrounds that are convincing and add both expensive-feeling heft and a bit of nice flash. The touch buttons and display for the climate controls are a bit silly, but they're livable, and the knobs for temperature setting are appreciated. The steering wheel is new, too, with three spokes now instead of two. We'd call it more of a lateral move style-wise, but the interior designer noted that the new design allows for more ergonomic button placement. We're not sure it's that big a difference, but we have no complaints about said wheel buttons. In addition to those crystal-like appointments, Genesis went above and beyond with interior color and materials selections.

Autoblog's Editors' Picks: Our complete list of the best new vehicles

Mon, May 13 2024

It's not easy to earn an “EditorsÂ’ Picks” at Autoblog as part of the rating and review process that every new vehicle goes through. Our editors have been at it a long time, which means weÂ’ve driven and reviewed virtually every new car you can go buy on the dealer lot. There are disagreements, of course, and all vehicles have their strengths and weaknesses, but this list features what we think are the best new vehicles chosen by Autoblog editors. We started this formal review process back in 2018, so there's quite of few of them now. So what does it mean to be an EditorsÂ’ Pick? In short, it means itÂ’s a car that we can highly recommend purchasing. There may be one, multiple, or even zero vehicles in any given segment that we give the green light to. What really matters is that itÂ’s a vehicle that weÂ’d tell a friend or family member to go buy if theyÂ’re considering it, because itÂ’s a very good car. The best way to use this list is is with the navigation links below. Click on a segment, and you'll quickly arrive at the top rated pickup truck or SUV, for example. Use the back button to return to these links and search in another segment, like sedans. If youÂ’ve been keeping up with our monthly series of the latest vehicles to earn EditorsÂ’ Pick status, youÂ’re likely going to be familiar with this list already. If not, welcome to the complete list that weÂ’ll be keeping updated as vehicles enter (and others perhaps exit) the good graces of our editorial team. We rate a new car — giving it a numerical score out of 10 — every time thereÂ’s a significant refresh or if it happens to be an all-new model. Any given vehicle may be impressive on a first drive, but we wait until itÂ’s in the hands of our editors to put it through the same type of testing as every other vehicle that rolls through our test fleet before giving it the EditorsÂ’ Pick badge. This ensures consistency and allows more voices to be heard on each individual model. And just so you donÂ’t think weÂ’ve skipped trims or variants of a model, we hand out the EditorsÂ’ Pick based on the overarching model to keep things consistent. So, when you read that the 3 Series is an EditorsÂ’ Pick, yes, that includes the 330i to the M3 and all the variants in between. If thereÂ’s a particular version of that car we vehemently disagree with, we make sure to call that out.
