GM natural gas-powered vans recalled due to possible leak
Wed, Sep 24 2014General Motors is recalling almost 3,200 of its compressed-natural-gas powered utility vans because of possible leaks. GM and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released a notice last week saying that 3,196 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana CNG vans are on recall, though no accidents have been reported due to the possible issue. The recall is specifically for vans for model years ranging from 2011 to 2014. The recall stems from a potential leak from the compressed natural gas high-pressure regulator, and such a leak could cause a fire or explosion. GM will replace the vehicles' high-pressure regulator in order to fix the problem, will do it free of charge and is instructing owners to contact Chevrolet or GMC customer service to arrange for the parts replacement. Utility vehicle makers like General Motors have pushed for fleet sales of CNG-powered vans and trucks for the past few years and have touted them for their cheaper refueling costs relative to standard gasoline, not to mention the fact that natural gas can be readily sourced from throughout North America (thanks, fracking). According to CNGPrices.com, compressed natural gas sells for about $2.22 a gallon, on average, while the AAA is pegging the average price of gas at $3.34 a gallon. 2023 GMC Canyon with ZR2-style off-road suspension caught in spy photos
Wed, Jul 7 2021GMC appears to be testing its redesigned 2023 Canyon pickup with an updated suspension lifted from the ZR2 variant of its Colorado twin. This heavily camouflaged prototype packs what look like Multimatic's DSSV dampers disguised with a black vinyl wrap. Rumors have pointed to a GMC variant of the Colorado ZR2 since the midsize pickup adopted the AT4 branding for its off-road variant. GM appears to be ready to adopt the formula for GMC's more-upscale pickup as it has for the Silverado. The latter, which has now been officially confirmed, has been spied on the road with its own DSSV shocks disguised in the same fashion as those seen here. This prototype is riding high – even for an AT4 – and sports a set of knobby Goodyear Wrangler all-terrain tires. We can tell that this is a Canyon rather than another Colorado thanks to the GMC-style fog lamp design, which differs from the Colorado prototypes we've already seen testing. Like the Colorado, the redesigned Canyon is expected to be offered with just one engine: a 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder lifted from the Silverado and Sierra pickups. Look for the Canyon to debut alongside its Chevy twin sometime in the next year or two as either a 2023 or 2024 model. Related video: This content is hosted by a third party. GM recalls Colorado, Canyon, and Malibu for airbag problem
Wed, Mar 9 2016The Basics: General Motors will recall and issue a stop sale on 1,740 total examples of the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado, Malibu, and GMC Canyon. This includes 1,579 units in the US and 161 in Canada. The Problem: The second stage of the driver front airbag inflator might not be present. If this happens, the airbag won't fill as quickly as it should in a high-speed crash, which could increase the risk of injury, according to Reuters. This is not related in any way to Takata's inflator problems, and these parts come from a different supplier. Injuries/Deaths: None reported. The Fix: GM will replace the vehicles' airbag assemblies. If You Own One: GM spokesperson Tom Wilkinson told Autoblog he wasn't specifically sure when recall repairs would begin but said it would be "shortly." He expects the fixes to happen "quickly" because of the small number of affected vehicles, and many of them are either in transport or already in dealer stock. More Information: GM recalled the 2015 Canyon and Colorado in 2014 for a completely separate airbag issue. In that case, a manufacturing error improperly wired the connectors. The second stage of the airbag may not deploy properly in certain high-speed crashes. During a routine quality inspection, it was determined that a component required for a second-stage/high-output deployment was not loaded during the inflator build. Dealers will replace the driver-side front airbag assembly. There have been no reports of crashes or injuries related to this issue. This issue is unrelated to the ongoing Takata recalls.
