GM to build outgoing Silverado and Sierra until late 2019
Tue, Nov 6 2018As it has done with previous generations, General Motors is keeping the outgoing versions of its 1500 pickups in production despite the arrival of the all-new 2019 Chevrolet Silverado and 2019 GMC Sierra. The production of the previous, K2 generation models will begin to be wound down gradually, according to Automotive News, starting with crew cabs "early next year," and double and regular cab models following during "the early second half of next year." The old model trucks will continue to be built into "late 2019" based on market demand, GM's spokesperson Kim Carpenter said. The Chevrolet will go by the name Silverado LD, with the GMC Sierra designation still to be announced. Some of the outgoing models are built by sharing the assembly work between two GM plants. Partially finished Silverado and Sierra double cab bodies are shipped from Fort Wayne, Ind., to Oshawa, Ont., where the trucks are completed, including receiving paint. This eases the workload in Fort Wayne, where production of the new T1 generation trucks started in July 2018. In January, the Silao plant in Mexico will take on the duties of building new generation regular cab and crew cab trucks. Carpenter also said that the "Oshawa shuttle," as the shared production is called, has been very successful. As a result, 60,000 more trucks will be built than what the original production forecast initially called for. GM's latest quarterly profits, disclosed last week to be $1 billion, have been far higher than expected and will result in full-year profits far higher than what had been predicted in light of steel tariffs. GM isn't the only truck maker taking a similar multi-generation approach for 2019. Both the outgoing and redesigned Ram 1500 are in production, with the previous generation being dubbed Ram 1500 Classic. Related Video:
2019 GMC Yukon Graphite Edition offers Denali engine and features without the chrome
Tue, Jun 12 2018A sporty-looking option package called RST was recently introduced for the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban that also offered the option of a 6.2-liter V8 and magnetic suspension. Now GMC is getting in on the action with the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL Graphite Edition. The trim package adds a number of visual enhancements, and, if you're so inclined, has a performance version with the same 6.2-liter V8 and magnetic suspension as the Tahoe RST and Yukon Denali. As for appearances, the Graphite Edition adds black trim almost everywhere, including the roof rails, grille, fog light surrounds, and window surrounds. It also adds 22-inch wheels, regardless of whether it's just the appearance version or the performance version. The appearance package has machined-finish wheels, and the performance package has black painted wheels. As previously mentioned, the performance version of the Graphite Edition adds magnetic suspension and the 6.2-liter V8 with 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque found on the Denali and the Tahoe and Suburban RSTs. It's coupled to a 10-speed automatic transmission, and gets a rear axle ratio of 3.23:1. It also gets a few other Denali features such as a color heads-up display, Bose noise cancellation, a 170-amp alternator, and a trailer brake controller. The Graphite Edition can be had with both two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. The Graphite Edition can only be had on Yukon and Yukon XL SLT models. Pricing hasn't been announced yet, but it's likely it will be a bit more affordable than buying a Denali model. 2019 GMC Sierra Denali and its nifty tailgate roll into dealers
Wed, Aug 22 2018We've got more details about the 2019 GMC Sierra Denali now that it's rolling into dealerships, starting with its floor price of $56,195, including destination fee, for the rear-wheel-drive models. That's a jump of $1,900 over the previous generation of its premium full-size pickup. Four-wheel-drive models start at $60,295. The crew-cab truck has grown in every dimension as well, adding about 4 inches to the wheelbase, nearly 2 inches in length and 1.2 inches in width. There's also nearly 3 inches more rear legroom. Bed options are 5-foot-8 or 6-foot-6. There are three engine options. Two are carryovers from 2018: a 5.3-liter V8 that sends 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque through an eight-speed automatic transmission, and an available 6.2-liter V8 that makes 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque and mated to a 10-speed automatic. Both come with GM's dynamic fuel management cylinder-deactivation technology to optimize power and fuel efficiency. A new 3.0-liter turbodiesel paired with a 10-speed automatic is expected in early 2019. The EPA hasn't yet released official fuel economy ratings, but GM estimates them at 17 miles per gallon in the city and 23 mpg on the highway for the two-wheel-drive versions, and 15/21 in four-wheel drive. The truck gets adaptive ride control which can adjust the dampers every 2 milliseconds based on real-time monitoring of the road and driver inputs for improved ride and handling. A new traction select system adjusts the transmission shift points, throttle mapping and StabiliTrak to tailor performance to different terrain or weather conditions. Inside the crew cab, there's new Forge leather-appointed seats, open-pore wood trim and dark finished aluminum decor, plus an 8-inch-diagonal HD color touchscreen with embedded navigation and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Most of the other new stuff we've covered before, including new C-shaped LED headlights and LED tail and fog lamps, optional 22-inch wheels, full-color head-up display, trailer-hitch assist apps and cameras, and rear-camera mirror. The truck also loses up to 360 pounds from the outgoing model via a scratch- and dent-resistant carbon-fiber bed box that replaces steel, and use of aluminum in the doors, hood and tailgate.
