2014 Chevy Silverado details continue to dribble out

PickupTrucks.com has gotten its hands on a few more details concerning the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and the 2014 GMC Sierra. General Motors held a conference call on the two trucks, allowing Jeff Luke, executive chief engineer for both, to answer a few questions. Luke said truck buyers are largely concerned with power and fuel economy, and as such, GM will continue to explore new methods of providing both. That may translate into any number of drivetrain permutations, including light-duty diesel engines, eight-speed transmissions or even a twin-turbocharged V6.
What's more, both the 2014 Silverado and its GMC twin will boast a tow rating of 11,500 pounds, but only when equipped with a max-trailering package. Without that special package, the rating drops to 10,200 lbs for regular cabs and 9,700 lbs for crew cabs. Buyers will no longer be able to opt for a 4.10 gear ratio.
We're also excited to hear that GM plans on making the Z71 package into something more than just a few a stickers. While Luke didn't go into details, PickupTrucks.com says "it will get significant improvements in the future." Head over to the site for a quick rundown of the call's highlights.

2019 GMC Sierra 1500 pickup teased on Twitter

GM's half-ton pickup line will be fully rounded up later this week when the new GMC Sierra 1500 is revealed. Though the unveiling is on March 1, GMC has provided a teaser of the new truck ahead of time on Twitter. It shows only the front fascia, but considering the Sierra's history of simply being a badge-engineered Silverado, it's arguably the most important angle of the truck. The teaser confirms a few things we were expecting based on past spy shots. The headlights look much more conventional than the Silverado's rather small units. The Sierra's grille, unlike the Silverado's, will also rise above the tops of the headlights, providing more of a big-rig appearance. We also finally get to see the GMC badge on the front of the Sierra, and it looks like it's an enormous rendition. As for the rest of the truck, previous spy shots have shown the Sierra will have other subtle styling changes from the Silverado. The wheel wells are shaped differently, and the taillights will be unique to the GMC. The interior of the new Sierra will look almost identical to that of the Silverado, with the exception of a few minor trim details. We also expect the Sierra to use the same engine lineup as the Chevy's, which at this point we know will consist of a 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel inline-six, and naturally aspirated 5.3- and 6.2-liter V8s. GMC wants to target Jeep with compact crossover

GMC execs might consider adding a Jeep competitor to the range, but rather than new rumors of a Wrangler-fighter, this time the Professional Grade brand could go after the Renegade. Division boss Duncan Aldred would like to broaden the brand's lineup with a subcompact crossover. "I keep telling everyone, 'How can General Motors' truck brand not be in the fastest-growing segment in the industry, an SUV segment," he said to Automotive News but wouldn't confirm whether the model was under development. General Motors already offers small crossovers like the Chevrolet Trax and Buick Encore, but the CUV segment in general continues to drive auto sales in the US. Adding a similarly sized GMC to the mix might increase the automaker's volume by appealing to different customers. "A GMC buyer is very different from a Buick buyer. This is like comparing the Fiat 500X to the Jeep Renegade. They are very similar but appeal to different people," Dave Sullivan, Product Analysis Manager at AutoPacific, told Autoblog. Aldred started the speculation about a Wrangler-fighting model in an interview in late 2014, and the company reportedly even raised the idea of an offroad-focused vehicle to dealers to see how they reacted. The development process was only in the very early planning stages, but the brand considered using Hummer for a little of the new product's inspiration. Aldred later suggested to journalists the possibility of adding a compact or midsize SUV to the GMC range in the next 10 years to appeal to more buyers. He didn't comment directly on the possibility of the Wrangler-challenger at the time beyond saying: "I can't confirm that ... everything's on the table." Related Video:
