GM warning 800,000 owners that their cars may need oil changes more frequently than they say

The days of changing your engine oil every 3,000 miles are long gone thanks to most cars having automatic oil monitoring systems, but about 800,000 General Motors vehicles apparently have incorrect monitoring software that is leading to premature engine component wear. According to Autoweek, certain 2010-2012 Buick LaCrosse, Regal, Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain models equipped with 2.4-liter four-cylinder engines could be going too long in between oil changes resulting in a higher-than-normal number of warranty claims for the engine's balance chain. The balance chain links the balance shaft to the crankshaft, and a worn one can produce higher noise levels.
As a fix, GM dealers will be reprogramming the software for the monitors in an effort to reduce the interval between oil changes, which varies based on driving habits and conditions. Through February 2015, the software update will be done at no cost to vehicle owners, but since this is not a recall, after that point, it will be up to the discretion of dealers as to whether or not they will charge for the service. What isn't immediately clear is whether GM plans on giving assistance to out-of-warranty customers who are experiencing engine issues from the worn chain.

2017 GMC Acadia adds four-cylinder and All Terrain model

General Motors has officially started the process of updating its long-in-the-tooth fullsize CUVs by unveiling the second-generation GMC Acadia at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show. While the Acadia is 700 pounds lighter, it's also shorter and narrower, which means it's not quite the people mover it used to be. You'll no longer be able to haul eight passengers, although there will still be five-, six-, and seven-passenger offerings. While families might not be thrilled with the loss of a seat, the lighter weight is a net win. Not only will the V6 model feel more powerful and efficient – in addition to the lower curb weight, there's a new, 310-horsepower engine – but it will also likely be more economical. GM estimates the front-drive V6 will return 25 miles per gallon on the freeway, compared to 24 mpg for the current front driver, but city fuel economy remains pegged at 17 mpg. In a move we're not entirely sold on, though, the Acadia will also adopt a four-cylinder engine, and no, it's not GM's highly regarded 2.0-liter turbo. Instead, you'll be able to order this 4,000-pound CUV with a 2.5-liter, 194-horsepower four-cylinder. What it won't be able to provide in straight-line speed, it will make up for with fuel economy. GM is wagering the front-drive, four-cylinder Acadia will net 22 mpg in the city and 28 on the highway. Both engines are paired with a HydraMatic 6T75 six-speed automatic. A new All Terrain model is said to be optimized for wet, snowy and icy conditions, and its drive mode selector removes the Off Road selection in favor of All Terrain. J.D. Power: Mini, Lexus again offer most satisfying sales experience

JD Power has released its annual Sales Satisfaction Index Study, and once again Mini and Lexus have taken top honors. Overall, buyers are more satisfied with the auto-buying sales experience than they were last year, with those surveyed reporting an average score of 664 points on a 1,000-point scale. That's up from 648 in 2011. Dealer satisfaction also increased by five points over last year as well.
All told, Lexus brought home an index score of 737, which was high enough to put it atop the luxury brands for the second year in a row. JD Power says Infiniti came in second in that category with a score of 728 and Cadillac rounded out the podium with it's rating of 725. Speaking of Infiniti, that brand saw the single largest jump in sales satisfaction of any brand on the survey, popping up 52 index points over 2011.
Among mass-market brands, Mini ranked highest with a score of 712, followed closely by Buick with 706 and GMC farther down the line with 683. You can check out the full press release below for more information.
