If you demand total steering compliance from a tow vehicle, along with stability and maneuverability from what's being towed, the GMC Sierra Denali with Quadrasteer is just the ticket. Developed jointly by GM and Delphi Automotive Systems, Quadrasteer (a rear-wheel-steering system for trucks) is a standard feature on the '02 Sierra Denali pickup and soon to be on other full-size GM products. By using various sensors around the vehicle, a microprocessor computes the correct rear-wheel position and actuates an electric motor to turn it accordingly.  Below 45 mph, the rear wheels can steer up to 12 (left or right). At these speeds, the rear wheels turn in the direction opposite the fronts. Above 40 mph, the rear wheels turn in the same direction as the fronts to significantly limit the pivoting a trailer feels at the hitch. Forty-five mph is a neutral zone, where the rear wheels maintain a fairly straight-ahead position even when the front wheels are turned. When in the 4WS Tow Mode (recommended for towing), the speed of the neutral zone is reduced by the microprocessor to 25 mph. Visually, rear-wheel turn appears modest, but the amount they do turn yields dramatic performance dividends. The Sierra Denali, with its Vortec 6000 V-8 and strong all-wheel-drive system, is capable of towing up to 10,000 lb. Hitching the Sierra Denali to a Holiday Rambler Alumascape travel trailer, we set out to test the setup. With the Alumascape having a dry weight of just under 5000 lb and a hitch weight of about 500 lb, we augmented our tow setup with a load distribution hitch and a sway-control device. We also added an electronic brake controller that actuates the trailer's electric brakes when the brake pedal is applied. Fully prepared, we headed up California Highway 74, which begins at sea level and climbs and winds a few thousand feet up before plunging down the backside of some rough desert mountains to Lake Elsinore below.
The trailer tracked well, exhibiting minimum trailer sway, and, with the exception of being visible in the side mirrors, for all intents and purposes its presence was transparent to us. Powering through mountain esses and tight hairpin turns, this twosome exhibited good synergy. Returning via the Interstate, we found that transitioning from one lane to another at freeway speeds was noticeably quicker and smoother, yielding less trailer sway than when we duplicated these same maneuvers using the 2WS Mode. Standard features of the Sierra Denali include a Vortec 6000 that develops 325 hp and 370 lb-ft of torque. Standard is a full-time all-wheel-drive system that employs a viscous coupling center differential in the transfer case that senses slippage front and rear and provides torque as needed, where it's needed. All by itself, this improves towing performance, especially under slick-surface conditions. The heavy-duty Dana 60 rear axle features a 4.10:1 ratio and a 9.8-in. ring gear (standard for the 1/2-ton Sierra is an 8.6-in. gear). The transmission is GM's newly revised and strengthened four-speed automatic

GM planning to put its fullsize pickups on a big diet, too

Fri, 19 Jul 2013

General Motors is just coming off a complete redesign of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra for 2014, but in the US fullsize truck market, there is no rest for the weary. According to Reuters, plans are already unfurling for both trucks to drop pounds from their curb weight over the next few years, but this will unlikely be able to keep pace with the 700-pound diet targeted for the next-generation Ford F-150, a truck expected to debut late next year.
The biggest weight reduction for these trucks might not be available until the next full redesign, which will likely happen around 2019, but the article says that smaller updates could shave pounds in the meantime. Two examples given include an "aluminum-intensive" version of the Silverado that could shed 250 pounds and debut around the same time as the lighter-weight, aluminum-bodied 2015 Ford, and there is also talk of reducing weight for driveline components such as axles and driveshafts. These changes are all part of an attempt to meet strict new fuel economy standards coming in 2017, targets which will get even tougher in 2025.

2017 GMC Sierra 2500HD All Terrain X eyes Ram Power Wagon

Mon, Oct 10 2016

If where you're going, you don't need roads, you're spoiled for choice by American automakers. Ford has the F-150 Raptor, Jeep the iconic Wrangler, and Ram offers Power Wagon. And that's just the tip of the factory off-road iceberg. General Motors is getting in on the off-roading action with the Canyon and Sierra 1500 All Terrain X. Now, the automaker is adding another notch on its belt with the Sierra 2500HD All Terrain X. On the outside, GMC continues to the all-black trend as the rest of its off-roading-oriented lineup, which includes 18-inch aluminum wheels finished in black, a bespoke grille surround, black sport bar that's mounted in the truck's bed, and four-inch side steps in black. The All Terrain X will only be offered in two colors – Black Onyx and Summer White. Those looking for more off-roading capabilities and tack the Z71 off-road suspension package as an option on the All Terrain X, adding performance Rancho shocks, Hill Descent Control, and a shield for the underbody transfer case. Two engine choices lie under this crew cab pickup's massive hood - the 6.0-liter gas V8 or the all-new Duramax 6.6-liter turbo-diesel V8. The gasoline-powered V8 continues to make 360 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque, while the new Duramax turbo-diesel generates 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque. While the All Terrain X may not have the same murderous look as the Ram Power Wagon, it makes off-roading a luxurious affair. And it's blacked out. The 2500HD power wagon will be on sale early next year, with a pricing announcement coming sometime in the next few months. GMC reveals updated 2016 Sierra

Wed, Jul 15 2015

It was just the other day that Chevy revealed the face of the new 2016 Silverado. And as might have been expected, sister brand GMC has followed up by unveiling its version in the facelifted 2016 Sierra pickup – just two and a half years since the current all-new model was rolled out. Though details released thus far remain few and far between, GMC has revealed more images of the new Sierra – in SLT, Denali and All Terrain trim levels – than Chevy did of the updated Silverado. It's got new headlights, fog lamps, and C-shaped daytime running lights and taillights, all using LED elements. It's arguably a more muscular look than the Chevy version, and with more chrome than the toned-down Silverado. That is, at least, in SLT and Denali trims. The All Terrain version looks more in line with the similarly off-road-focused Silverado Z71 and its color-keyed treatment. The changes ought to help GMC keep up the momentum that has seen its sales rise year-over-year every month over the past twelve. The interior shots indicate that the new Sierra will incorporate Apple CarPlay like GM is installing in so many models across its various brand ranges. But we'll have to wait a little while longer for all the details. With exterior styling as its top reason for purchase, the new truck adds key design elements: LED "C-shaped" signature daytime running lights and LED headlights; new front fascia and grilles for each trim level; new LED fog lamps; new bumpers; and new "C-shaped" LED taillights. The new Sierra will be available in the fourth quarter of this year, with additional details and information on the new model released in the coming months.
