GM mulling off-road variants of fullsize SUVs

According to General Motors, owners "just love off-roading with [its fullsize body-on-frame sport utility vehicles]," namely the 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban and GMC Yukon. If that's the case, it's a bit odd that sales of the previous generation of these models with the Z71 off-road package didn't sell particularly well.
Perhaps, considering this disconnect between owner's thoughts and desires with actual sales, it's not surprising that General Motors is reportedly "considering" an off-road specific model. That means the package would include styling changes and badges along with suspension modifications and larger wheels with appropriately sized fender flares.
There's no indication if the off-road model would be called Z71 or when it may potentially go on sale, assuming it ever goes on sale at all.

2015 GMC Canyon Nightfall Edition rumbles in under the radar

Buyers enticed by the new 2015 GMC Canyon will want to take a look at the new Nightfall Edition. Unveiled here on the floor of the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, the Nightfall is based on the mid-level SLE trim level in four-door crew cab bodystyle, but upgrades with a stealthy appearance and bundled extras. It's decked out in Onyx Black paint, for starters, but also has a blacked-out grille and side steps, a spray-in bedliner and 18-inch wheels with darkened inserts, as well as a polished exhaust tip, remote start and automatic climate control fitted as standard. The only choice left up to the buyer of this murdered-out mid-size pickup is whether to get it in 2WD or 4WD. Either way, motivation is provided by the Canyon's 3.6-liter V6 with its 305 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque. Pricing has yet to be announced, but considering that the SLE on which it's based starts at $30,980 and that the SLT comes in at $34,345, we'd expect the Nightfall to be positioned in the low 30s, with another few grand for four-wheel drive. Watch GM's new pickup crash its way to five-star NHTSA ratings

General Motors has just scored a big win with its Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks, acing the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration New Car Assessment Program. The two full-size trucks had already netted a five-star Overall Vehicle Score in their crew-cab variants, but the new testing certifies them as five-star trucks in both regular and double-cab bodystyles, so GM's trucks offer top ratings across the board.
"Our incredibly capable trucks have been engineered to be some of the safest," Gay Kent, GM's general director of Vehicle Safety and Crashworthiness said. "We've designed the vehicle structure, strategically placed high-strength steel and developed the occupant restraint system to achieve high levels of safety performance."
The scores mark the Silverado and Sierra as the first pickups to net five-star scores since NHTSA beefed up their testing regime in 2011, a nice feather in GM's cap as it continues to slug out the pickup truck wars with crosstown rivals Ford and Ram.
