Model Overview
The front-wheel-drive Transit Connect is powered by a 136-horsepower, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine, hooked up to a 4-speed automatic transmission. The model gets a low 4.20:1 final-drive ratio to aid hauling ability, yet it still carries respectable 19 mpg city, 24 highway fuel economy ratings.Phenomenal interior space and cargo-carrying ability is what makes the Transit Connect unlike any other vehicle in the U.S. market. It has 135 cubic feet of cargo colume--including more than 59 inches of floor-to-ceiling load height inside and nearly 73 inches of load width. Split cargo doors in back open up to 255 degrees to aid loading, and cargo capacity is an able 1,600 pounds. The Transit Connect promises to drive like a car and has a 39-foot curb-to-curb turning circle. At just 180 inches long, its parking footprint is smaller than that of a mid-size sedan. Underneath, the suspension combines the MacPherson strut front suspension of a car with the load-carrying rear suspension of a cargo van; the combination of leaf springs and a stabilizer bar helps accommodate heavy loads. Inside, the Transit Connect's driver's seat is 6-way adjustable and comes with an armrest, and the steering wheel is adjustable for rake and reach. A standard center console has twin storage bins and cupholders, and there's space for overhead storage. Air conditioning and a 2-speaker radio are included across the model line. The XLT model adds many of the convenience features of passenger vehicles, including cruise control, remote keyless entry, power windows and locks, heated mirrors and a CD sound system with auxiliary input. Ford will offer a wide range of accessories and special configurations of the Transit Connect to suit various commercial purposes. Possibilities include a panel-van version or a wagon version with a folding second-row bench seat. All versions come with sliding side doors. The available Ford Work Solutions system helps those who take work on the road with them with navigation and messaging, while Tool Link attaches radio-identification tags to make sure tools aren't left at a worksite. There's also Crew Chief, a tool to help companies with large fleets monitor their vehicles.

Ford owns Automotive Loyalty Awards, Audi and Subaru are king of conquests

Thu, 23 Jan 2014

Customers are a commodity in the automotive industry, and like any other commodity, automakers trade them back and forth. Only nobody wants to give up their customers - just to keep the ones they have and try to attract others.
That's what the Polk Automotive Loyalty Awards are all about. Every year the industry research body names the automakers, brands and models that manage to keep their customers coming back for more - and attract buyers to switch from other makes. Ford usually does pretty well, but this year it rose above even its own track record.
Not only did Dearborn win the Overall Loyalty to Manufacturer award, but also the Overall Loyalty to Make. Ford also took the African American category, and the F-150 was named the top full-size half-ton pickup in customer loyalty. Ford COO Mark Fields (pictured above) accepted the awards and gave the keynote address at the awards ceremony.

Ford lowers MPG ratings on six vehicles

Thu, 12 Jun 2014

Ford has announced that it will be lowering the fuel economy ratings on a number of its 2013 and 2014 model year vehicles after an error was discovered in the company's internal testing data. The EPA has been notified.
Worryingly for Ford, the vast majority of the vehicles affected are hybrids, including the C-Max, Fusion and MKZ in both hybrid and plug-in varieties (where applicable). Also covered as part of the rerating is the entire lineup of 2014 Fiesta engines, with the exception of the ST, including the turbocharged, three-cylinder EcoBoost.
The C-Max was originally rated at 47/47/47 mpg, but dropped to 43/45/40 last year and now to 40/42/37.

Ford Shelby GT350 Mustang is a lean, mean, Z/28-fighting machine [w/video]

Mon, 17 Nov 2014

If there's one thing you can count on, it's that the renewed rivalry between the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro will never, ever cease. For every version of Ford's pony car, there's an equally potent Chevrolet. And so with the debut of the Camaro Z/28 earlier this year, Ford has responded with a track-focused 'Stang of its own, resurrecting the Shelby GT350 name.
It looks to be a fine piece of work, this Mustang, with power coming from a naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V8 that will produce "more than 500 horsepower" and "above 400" pound-feet of torque. That grunt runs to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission, and a Torsen limited-slip differential keeps everything in line.
But that's hardly the most impressive piece of the GT350 puzzle. Ford has increased the Mustang GT's chassis stiffness for duty here in the Shelby, and the coupe employs MagneRide damping which automatically adjusts based on road conditions and driver inputs. It's a first both for the Blue Oval and for the segment. And speaking of firsts, the GT350 uses a flat-plane crankshaft - something Ford has never included in a production V8 before.
