1970 Ford Torino Cobra Jet

By 1970 there was a lot of pressure for the big three in Detroit to get out of the horse power race and the muscle car business.  However with the NASCAR oval still an influence in everyone’s racing agenda, Ford decided to come up with a car that would be competitive with Dodge & Plymouths that were eating up the tracks with the winged cars.

In 1970 the newly designed 429 allowed Ford to stay in the game with the Torino as the NASCAR chassis of choice. The production GT Torino Cobra was marketed toward the more affluent buyer and the option list was longer with more trim d?cor levels while still offering up very stout performance numbers.  And to get a real thrill from the 429 engine was to bolt it up to a 4-speed tranny and this combination made a very HOT street package.  While it offered up room for four and a trunk worthy of carrying more then a few bags of grocery and truth be told it was not easy to get your hands on oe from your local Ford dealer.

While the Torino 429 with 4-speed transmission was not as well known in its day as the Chrysler Hemi product but by 1970 had been developed into a fully competitive setup with the Chrysler Corporation Hemis and in many cases could edge out the Hemi in its race form and properly setup.

Today it seems that the serious collectors are looking for the more rare muscle cars and not the “me too” muscle cars that were setup to look like they could perform but would fall flat on the racetrack or the drag strip.  The 1970 Ford Torino GT 429 4-speed took a backseat to no muscle car in 1970 either on the racetrack or drag strip – yet was docile enough to drive around town.

It also accommodate driver and passengers in a very roomy and luxurious form so that you could race on Sunday and drive it to work on Monday.  Today when you go to a muscle car show you are usually dazzled by the great number of Hemi’s and Camaro Z28 but you hardly ever see more then one Torinos 429.

The car for sale in this ad was restored in the 1990s and has been decoded and below you will find the decoding that matches the car up completely.  This car is in such beautiful condition it was on the cover of a calendar as shown.

From our research at MissChiTown the market on muscle cars seems to have leveled off yet a few muscle cars like the Torino seem to be on an accelerated increase.  We love the subtle colors and the fastback design and encourage interested bidders by letting them know that the reserve has been set at a surprisingly low number.  (The owner has requested that we not disclose the reserve in this marketing ad so please don’t ask).

This is one car that you can bid on with confidence and look forward to the fun of the drive and weekend shows and to say nothing of future appreciation.

First Ford Mustang prototype shots caught by legendary spy shooter Jim Dunne

Fri, 12 Apr 2013

You know how people refer to someone as having "been around the block" to mean they're very experienced? Well, when it comes to automotive spy photography, Jim Dunne actually laid down the concrete slabs of the block's sidewalk. The unforgettable Dunne more or less invented the car spy game - a fact he cemented by writing book called Car Spy - and has been delivering spy shots and reporting on the industry for some 45 years now. (He also once employed this writer as his impromptu personal chauffer on a Volkswagen trip in Germany, while he slept, but that's a story for a different time.)
In any event, Dunne must be on a mission to prove that "elder statesman" doesn't also mean "washed up" as it is his shots of the upcoming new 2014 Ford Mustang that we've been handed by our friends at KGP Photography.
Mr. Dunne has likely spent the last few years obtaining powerful telescopic lenses, as the Ford in question has clearly been photographed from some distance. Nevertheless, what you see here is visual evidence that the sixth-generation Mustang has moved beyond the mule stage, and is now testing in proper prototype form. Sources indicate that there are production-spec body panels under that baggy canvass dress; but the slightly less bulky silhouette of the new car can be just made out. While the car's bumpers have been removed to obfuscate things, we can tell by way of the camo's apertures that the car's taillights have moved upwards and towards the lip of the tail. A fender vent appears to be visible, too, just behind the front wheel.

Is it time for American carmakers to give up on dual-clutch transmissions? [w/poll]

Mon, 22 Jul 2013

Last week, in the midst of Detroit's first days seeking relief in Chapter 9 of the bankruptcy code, Automotive News contributor Larry P. Vellequette penned an editorial suggesting that American car companies raise the white flag on dual clutch transmissions and give up on trying to persuade Americans to buy cars fitted with them. Why? Because, Vellequette says, like CVT transmissions, they "just don't sound right or feel right to American drivers." (Note: In the article, it's not clear if Vellequette is arguing against wet-clutch and dry-clutch DCTs or just dry-clutch DCTs, which is what Ford and Chrysler use.) The article goes on to state that Ford and Chrysler have experimented with DCTs and that both consumers and the automotive press haven't exactly given them glowing reviews, despite their quicker shifts and increased fuel efficiency potential compared to torque-converter automatic transmissions.
Autoblog staffers who weighed in on the relevance of DCTs in American cars generally disagreed with the blanket nature of Vellequette's statement that they don't sound or feel right, but admit that their lack of refinement compared to traditional automatics can be an issue for consumers. That's particularly true in workaday cars like the Ford Focus and Dodge Dart, both of which have come in for criticism in reviews and owner surveys. From where we sit, the higher-performance orientation of such transmissions doesn't always meld as well with the marching orders of everyday commuters (particularly if drivers haven't been educated as to the transmission's benefits and tradeoffs), and in models not fitted with paddle shifters, it's particularly hard for drivers to use a DCT to its best advantage.
Finally, we also note that DCT tuning is very much an evolving science. For instance, Autoblog editors who objected to dual-clutch tuning in the Dart have more recently found the technology agreeable in the Fiat 500L. Practice makes perfect - or at least more acceptable.

Trump to meet with CEOs from Ford, GM, and FCA

Tue, Jan 24 2017

In the wake of his inauguration, President Donald Trump is set to meet with the CEOs of Ford, General Motors, and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Tuesday morning to discuss jobs, the North American Free Trade Agreement, and potential tax cuts. Trump has been highly critical of American automakers for shipping jobs to Mexico and has threatened to impose heavy import fees on foreign-made vehicles. Trump has threatened to dissolve NAFTA in order to encourage automakers to manufacture cars in the US. Automotive News and Crain's Detroit Business are reporting that the group is set to discuss how to bring more auto industry jobs back to the US. Under NAFTA, many automakers, both foreign and domestic, have moved vehicle production out of the States to Mexico in order to cut costs. White House spokesperson Sean Spicer said Trump is looking forward to the meeting and discussing how to bring jobs back to America. Dismantling NAFTA would be a major blow to automakers. Trump blasted Ford during his campaign for manufacturing in Mexico, but FCA and GM also have factories south of the border. Earlier this month, Ford nixed plans for a $1.6 billion plant in Mexico, instead investing $700 million into an existing facility. At this year's Detroit Auto Show, the unspoken theme was America and American manufacturing. Expect the automakers to fight to keep NAFTA alive.
