This 1963 Ford Thunderbird was recently donated to a local charity and is for sale on their behalf. Best considered a project or parts car, it was taken out of long term storage in 2009, re-registered, and has been on non-op status ever since.

The body is solid with some rust patches primarily at the lower corners of the rear window. (see photos) The foot wells (under the carpet) have surface rust, and a few tiny holes. The trunk well has only surface rust. The paint is probably original but very dull and beyond salvaging. The chrome is fairly dull, but should shine up well.

Inside, the seats are dry and there is a seam split in the rear seat. The dash has a few cracks, and the driver's door panel has been removed. (possibly to fix the power windows?) Chrome trip is fairly pitted. On the positive side... the headliner looks great. The lights, radio, and passenger side power window work too!

Mechanically, It fires right up and idles nicely. The transmission seems to work but we have not driven it on the road due to lack of registration and the brakes seem fairly soft.

A perfect start to a restoration or a trick custom! Or just part it out to save others.

No Reserve!

Ford, Samsung shack up to bring regen braking to non-hybrid models [w/video]

Mon, 09 Jun 2014

Ford must be desperate to get itself ready for the beach this summer because it is really trying to get into shape. Shortly after unveiling the Lightweight Concept that cut the weight of a Fusion down to that of a Fiesta, it's now the rest of the line's turn for improvement. The company is wrapping up a 10-year research project aimed at developing next-gen automotive batteries to improve efficiency.
Ford claims that 70 percent of its lineup will have stop/start tech by 2017. The key to this massive proliferation is its new dual-battery system that combines a lithium-ion battery with a lead-acid one and regenerative braking. The setup works by harvesting braking energy and converting it to electricity. When the vehicle stops, the engine shuts off, but the Li-ion battery has enough juice to keep the accessories running. The engine starts up again as drivers take their foot off the brake. The layout would mean less wasted gas while idling. It's already available on Ford hybrids and is somewhat similar to the i-Eloop capacitor-based system from Mazda.
The bigger challenge is tuning the regenerative braking right. While hybrid drivers may be a little more adventurous, when it comes to getting a hang of regen braking, conventional buyers might not be so open-minded. The systems have a tendency to be a little grabby at first and then taper off at very low speeds. Ford needs to make sure it's just right to avoid turning off buyers.

Watch Ken Block's scary Rally America crash from inside the cockpit

Wed, 19 Feb 2014

Ken Block became famous for his series of Gymkhana videos, but he's a real racer in his own right. Block has competed many rounds in the FIA World Rally Championship and also rallied in the 2013 Rally America series. He nearly won that latter title last year - if not for a massive crash in the final event of the season.
Block and his co-driver Alex Gelsomino went into the Lake Superior Performance Rally needing a win to take the championship. However, missing a clump of dirt on the side of the road and one little word in the pace notes was all it took to catapult Block's Fiesta off the road and into a tumbling accident. Block says his initial reaction was anger because the crash came out of nowhere.
For 2014, Block is joining the FIA World Rallycross Championship for at least three rounds. He'll drive a Ford Fiesta for the Hoonigan Racing Division at the Norwegian, French and Turkish events of the 12-round championship. Former Formula One World Champion Jacques Villeneuve will also compete in the series.
