FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION WE HAVE A 1955 FORD THUNDERBIRD CONVERTIBLE.  PREVIOUS OWNER SAYS IT WAS #143 OFF THE ASSEMBLY LINE.  PURCHASED IN MICHIGAN BY HIS FATHER, AND SHIPPED TO PENNSYLVANIA.  SO THIS WAS A ONE FAMILY CAR BEFORE I PURCHASED IT.  SPENT SOME TIME IN FLORIDA AND THEN DRIVEN TO CALIFORNIA WHERE IT HAS BEEN EVER SINCE.  I HAD PLANS OF RESTORING AND PUTTIN' AROUND SANTA CRUZ HERE, BUT SADLY REALIZED THAT AT THIS TIME AND PLACE IN MY LIFE, I DO NOT HAVE THE CAPACITY TO DO SO.

THIS I BELIEVE IS AN EXCELLENT CANDIDATE FOR A RESTORE.  THERE ARE NUMEROUS RECORDS DOCUMENTING THE WORK THAT HAS BEEN DONE.....MOST IMPORTANTLY AN ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION REBUILD SOMETIME AROUND 2004/2005.  I'M SORRY BUT I CAN'T PINPOINT THE EXACT DATE......JUST GOING BY THE RECORDS/PAPERWORK THAT WAS PROVIDED TO ME BY THE FORMER OWNER.  ALL NEW BRAKES AND POWER BOOSTER, 312 INTAKE MANIFOLD, NEW HEADER PIPE, AND A FEW OTHER REPAIRS AT THE SAME TIME ENGINE AND TRANNY REBUILD.  NEW GAS TANK IN 2010.  POWER WINDOW KIT 55 12V WITH E 2010.  RING GEAR BROKE FREE FROM TORQUE CONVERTER......MOTOR AND TRANNY REMOVED, WELDED.  REPLACED MOTOR SIDE MOUNTS.  INSTALLED NEW WATER PUMP AND THERMOSTAT.  REPLACED GENERATOR WITH NEW ALTERNATOR.......ALL DONE IN 2009.  PASSENGER SIDE POWER WINDOW INSTALL 12 CONVERSION KIT 2010.  REPLACED FITTING AND LINE FOR FUEL TANK 2010.  NEW ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP AND FILTER 2010.  WORKS GREAT BUT LOAD.  REPLACED SPEEDO AND TACH CABLE 2010.  TACH WORKS SPEEDO DOES NOT.  I BELIEVE THIS TO BE THE CORRECT MILEAGE, OR VERY CLOSE. THE PREVIOUS OWNER DID NOT DRIVE IT MUCH AFTER THE WORK WAS DONE BECAUSE OF POOR HEALTH.  DRIVERS POWER WINDOW MOTOR REPLACED WITH 12 VOLT MOTOR AND REGULATOR, RELAYS AND WIRING 2010.  MUCH HAS BEEN CONVERTED TO A 12V SYSTEM WITH I BELIEVE THE EXCEPTION OF THE STARTER.  NO PROBLEM CRANKING OVER...PLENTY OF JUICE.  I STARTED IT FOR THE FIRST TIME IN PROBABLY A MONTH WITH NO PROBLEMS......STARTED FIRST TIME.  PUTTED AROUND THE NEIGHBORHOOD A BIT. BATTERY IS A NEW INTERSTATE 12V.  IDLES FINE AND SOUNDS GREAT. TEMP GAUGE NOT WORKING.  I DROVE IT OVER TO MY MECHANICS SHOP FROM SANTA CRUZ TO SOQUEL AND BACK WITHOUT IT HEATING UP.  TRANSMISSION SHIFTS FINE.  CARB HAS BEEN REPLACED.....NOW HAS A HOLLEY 4-BARREL.  I BELIEVE IT HAD AC AT ONE TIME, BUT WITH ALL THE WORK THAT HAS BEEN DONE, WHO KNOWS WHERE IT WOUND UP.  TIRES ARE NEW......BF GOODRICH PREMIER P205/75R15 97S WW.  WW MOUNTED ON THE INSIDE.

I KNOW THE CAR HAS BEEN REPAINTED AND SOME BODY WORK HAS BEEN DONE.  I CAN SEE IT IN THE FRONT, RIGHT-FRONT FENDER AND REAR QUARTERS.  THE TRUNK IS FREE OF RUST.  THE DRIVERS SIDE FLOOR WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED.  I ORDERED AND RECEIVED A NEW DRIVERS SIDE METAL FLOOR FROM LARRYS T-BIRDS.....GOES WITH THE CAR.  I FIGURED THE NEW OWNER WOULD RATHER HAVE THIS DONE WITH THEIR GUY/SHOP.  THE PASSENGER SIDE FLOOR HAS A FEW RUST SPOTS, THE LARGEST ABOUT THE SIZE OF A NICKEL, BUT NOT BAD.  UNDER THE BENCH SEAT LOOKS GOOD.  I TOOK A FEW PICS TRYING TO SHOW UNDERNEATH, BUT CAR IS PRETTY LOW.  SEAT IN GREAT SHAPE.  SOFT TOP IS THERE AS YOU CAN SEE, BUT WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED.  NO HARD TOP.  THE OTHER CARB IN HOLLEY BOX IN TRUNK.  ORIGINAL SPARE WITH DUNLOP TIRE, JACK ALSO INCLUDED.  1955 FORD CAR SHOP MANUAL INCLUDED.  THIS IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR SOMEONE THAT HAS THE TIME AND MONEY FOR A SEEMINGLY STRAIGHT FORWARD RESTO.  PLEASE FEEL FREE TO ASK QUESTIONS.  I WILL BE HAPPY TO ANSWER THEM TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY.  THANK YOU AND GOOD LUCK!

Junkyard Gem: 1993 Mercury Topaz GS Sedan

Sat, Aug 13 2022

As long as the Mercury brand existed — a period spanning the 1939 through 2011 model years — nearly every Mercury sold in the United States was more or less a redecorated Ford model. The Torino had its Montego sibling, the Crown Victoria had the Grand Marquis, the Cougar was based on everything from the Mustang to the Mondeo, and so on. Naturally, when the folks in Dearborn developed the Ford Tempo compact, a Mercury version had to be created. This was the Topaz, with the official launch of both cars taking place on the deck of the aircraft carrier often referred to as the USS Decrepit. You can't make this stuff up! The Tempo/Topaz, also known as the Tempaz, has largely faded from our collective automotive memory by now, since it broke no significant new engineering or styling ground (this story would be much different if Ford had only put the amazing straight-eight "T-Drive" Tempaz powertrain into production) and didn't have any endearing features other than being a cheap domestic competitor to the Toyota Corolla and Nissan Sentra. Still, close to 3 million Tempazes left North American Ford and Lincoln-Mercury showrooms during the 1984-1994 period. As you'd expect, most of these disposable cars disappeared from both the street and the car graveyard long ago. It takes a very special Tempaz for me to break out my camera while I'm patrolling my local wrecking yards; generally, this means an ultra-rare all-wheel-drive version or at least a very early model in super-clean condition. Today's Junkyard Gem is neither, but I took one look at this spectacular Bordello Red crypto-velour-and-slippery-plastic interior and recognized that this was no ordinary junkyard Mercury. It appears that Mercury had dropped the idea of clever names for base-grade seat fabrics by the time of the Topaz, referring to this stuff as just "cloth" in all the brochures I could find. That's too bad, because Mercurys had cool names for upholstery (e.g., Chromatex) in the old days. The interior is in very good condition but the steering wheel shows substantial wear, so I think this is a high-mile Topaz that got meticulous care from its owner or owners. Ford used five-digit odometers on these cars until the end of production, however, so we'll never know if this reading indicates 65,404 miles or 365,404 miles. The body is very straight, but there's some nasty corrosion behind the right front wheelwell.

How Ford's light lab keeps the sun shining on the new Mustang just right [w/video]

Thu, 02 Jan 2014

Anyone who's bought one of those old school metal shift knobs knows they're really cool until they sit in a parking lot in the sun for a few hours. Then they're not cool at all. Likewise, features such as the aluminum dash on the 2015 Ford Mustang can be all kinds of neat right up until the sun hits it just the right way and sends shards of blinding light through the cabin. The Ford Visual Performance and Evaluation Lab is where engineers figure out how to make sure that doesn't happen.
Cars like said Mustang are parked inside the 30-foot reflecting dome under 6,000 watts of lights that can mimic the sun at any time of day and in any weather condition. Engineers can then spend cold, overcast days inside, testing for interior legibility, glare and reflections on every interior and exterior surface as if it were bright and sunny. They can also learn how a car's sheetmetal and colors will look out of doors, all year round.
Ford showed off the lighting lab without the music and interviews three years ago when the Explorer was being prepared. You can watch it at work again in the video below, and read about it in the press release below that.
