1940 Ford Pro Street Pickup

The starting point of this amazing Pickup was purchased in 2011. It had the right stance, a solid body, and drove well powered by a small block Chevy. It had a modified  original frame with an independent front suspension and a fabricated rear half. There was no doubt, it was a strong starting point to modify into the Perfect Pickup.

It soon became apparent that despite the original builder's good intentions, the frame, suspension and entire drivetrain would never meet the new owner's expectations.
The Professional Rebuild entailed stripping the body to bare metal, to achieve the resulting show quality bodywork and paint. Every part of the truck was reworked or replaced to maintain an unsurpassed standard. The rebuild was performed at a cost of over 1000 hours and quarter of a million dollars, resulting in workmanship that must be seen to be appreciated, a tasteful blend of quality, tradition and staggering performance.

 Here are the results:

COMMENTARY

Open the hood, and the Blown Big block is majestic in a contrast of highly polished aluminum, chrome, and gloss black. The firewall is smooth, the wiring is invisible, and the dual Holley carbs are topped by a tasteful and very functional custom aluminum air intake. It was hand formed to fit under the hood at a cost of about $4000.
Walking around the truck, it has a perfect stance. Casual observers don't even notice it's putting down 36" of rubber - unless they are following the truck down the road.
The body panels fit perfectly, with tight, even gaps, and the mirror - like
exterior paint quality is consistant everywhere, in the jambs, around the doors, under the hood.
The understated, deceptively simple theme is carried into the interior, including the quality underlying every aspect of this build.
The engine starts easily and immediately falls into a nice lope. Shift into gear, and the throttle response is immediate, without being jumpy. Again, the quality of the build shines through, with a supple and very comfortable ride, and no ground clearance issues. It cruises over rail tracks without a clunk, rattle or complaint.
As effortless as the pickup is to drive, apply the throttle with finesse - the dyno numbers are real. Acceleration is thrilling, and inspires confidence that the driver is in control, even with the rear tires spinning at well over the speed limit.
The Wilwood brakes also inspire confidence, stopping straight and true.

Inspection of this '40 is not only welcome, it is encouraged. Be assured that the longer you look at the truck the more you will appreciate the detail, workmanship and engineering skill that was employed to bring this project together.
For those unfamiliar with the quality builds that are performed by Kugel Komponents, there's a lot of information on the Web, as well as a comprehensive site. There are almost 200 full screen photos online doccumenting the complete build -  http://www.hotrodharness.com/1940-ford-pickup.html

Former Cadillac boss Butler takes Ford tech job

Tue, 07 Jan 2014

When Don Butler made the surprising decision to leave his post as Cadillac's VP of global strategic development, it was a surprise. Citing a desire to "recalibrate, reassess my priorities" in that August announcement, it wasn't entirely clear where Butler - a virtual General Motors lifer after spending nearly 30 years with the company - would end up. Turns out he took a trip to Dearborn.
Butler has taken a position in the newly created position of Executive Director of Connected Vehicles and Services at Ford, where he'll be responsible for the Blue Oval's global connectivity strategy. "Not only does Don understand the connected car landscape, but probably just as important, he understands customer expectations," said Raj Nair, who, as Group Vice President of Global Product Development, is Butler's new boss. "Having a leader with technology experience both inside and outside the industry is a rare combination - we're excited to have Don join our team."
As Ford has received its fair share of flak for the sometimes recalcitrant MyFord Touch infotainment system and its Sync voice-controls, it appears that Butler has his work cut out for him.

2014 Roush Stage 3 Mustang

Fri, 26 Jul 2013

Up until now, it's been some years since I managed to get behind the wheel of the hot Mustangs tuned by the folks at Roush Performance. My memories of those vehicles are fond, as the Roush up-fits usually make for better-driving examples of the iconic Ford pony, with better-tuned suspensions, excellent short-shift kits and, of course, huge additions of power. The wake-your-neighbors aural characteristics of these cars have been nothing short of outstanding, too.
But in the years since my last experience with the Roush formula, Ford's own development team has churned out some pretty potent 'Stangs. We currently live in a world where the Blue Oval will sell you a Mustang with 662 horsepower from the factory, and the recently departed Boss 302 remains one of the best Mustangs - and best sports coupes - the Autoblog crew has ever driven.
So with great-driving and hugely powerful Mustangs coming straight off the line at Ford's Flat Rock Assembly Plant, does the Roush package still offer that extra special something to make it stand out? I spent a week with a Stage 3 coupe to find out.

Recharge Wrap-up: Grimsel electric car breaks acceleration world record, electric Ford Raptor ATV debuts

Sun, Nov 16 2014

An all-electric version of the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor is now available... as an ATV. Made by Caddyshack Golf Cars, it features officially licensed Ford badging borrowed from the super-macho pickup. It has a lifted chassis with leaf springs in the front and rear, hydraulic shocks and off-road tires. Powered by a 48-volt motor, it can do 0-25 mph in 2.9 seconds. Range is an estimated 30 miles - plenty to get you through 18 of the most rugged holes of golf you've ever played. Caddyshack also offers other miniature electric Fords, including a Shelby GT500, Shelby Cobra and 50th Anniversary Mustang. Read more at Green Car Reports. Lexus takes a crack at the BMW i3 in a new video from Funny or Die. In the decidedly anti-EV film, a group of guys drives to Las Vegas for a "dad-chelor party" in a Lexus CT 200h and a BMW i3. The Lexus hybrid makes it to Sin City without any problems, while the BMW's occupants need to make several lengthy stops to charge along the way, missing much of the fun. The video lampoons the inherent range limitations of the EV (the BMW group ends up driving slowly through the desert with no AC or radio to save energy), all in a well produced, if somewhat misguided, short comedy film. Perhaps they should have considered the i3 with a range extender? See the video below, or read more at Green Car Reports. Students from ETH Zurich and Lucerne University have set a new EV acceleration world record. Their "Grimsel" racing car was able to zoom from 0-100 kph (0-62.137 mph) in just 1.785 seconds in less than 30 meters (98.425 feet), crushing the previous record of 2.134 seconds. Even more impressive is that the Grimsel was built by the students themselves, as part of the Formula Student team at the Academic Motorsports Club Zurich. The car weighs just 370 pounds and provides 200 horsepower and 1,202 pound feet of torque from the four hub motors. The Grimsel uses traction control to manage torque for maximum acceleration. See the record acceleration run in the videos below or read more at Gizmag, at Electric Autosport or in the press release from ETH Zurich below. 'grimsel' breaks world record The 'grimsel' electric racing car today broke the previous world record for acceleration in electric cars. The vehicle accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in 1.785 seconds in under 30 metres. The new record was set by students from ETH Zurich and Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, who also designed and built the vehicle.
