As of the end of November, Volkswagen had sold 70,000 more cars than General Motors in China in 2013, making it appear inevitable that VW will outsell GM there. The feat would return the German brand to the top of chart in China for the first time in nine years, but even the second-place getter won't be complaining too loudly: both automakers sold more than three million vehicles in a market pegged to hit 16 million sales this year.
Volkswagen said it could have sold more cars if it had had more production capacity in China. The arrival of a new-to-China Audi A4, a China-built A3 sedan, the VW Bora and Skoda Octavia, as well as an $18.2-billion-euro investment in the country to construct new factories, means VW should see its numbers grow in 2014. GM's lineup is expanding next year, too, adding four Chevrolet nameplates and two vehicles to its Baojun brand as it tries to get to five million in sales by 2015.
Among other automakers, Ford benefited from good product and woes for Japanese automakers over a territorial dispute with China, outselling Toyota by almost 32,000 units through the end of November. The Ford Focus is China's best-selling vehicle so far this year.

The Ford F-Series has been America's best-selling truck for decades, but along with the good comes the bad, apparently. In addition to being popular with consumers, the Highway Loss Data Institute notes that the F-Series Super Duty has risen in popularity among thieves. Based on its new study, the four-wheel drive crew cab F-250 Super Duty has topped the list for the country's highest rate of insurance theft claims, knocking the Cadillac Escalade from the top spot - a distinction the luxury SUV has held since this annual report was first established in 2003.
To reach its findings, HLDI looks at theft data from the previous three model years (in this case 2010-2012) to determine the frequency of claims for a particular make and mode,l as well as the average payment per claim. As the report points out, the claims aren't always for the theft of the entire vehicle - they can include components (say, wheels and tires) or property taken from the vehicle. At seven claims per 1,000 insured vehicles, the F-250 is six times more likely to suffer a theft claim than the average vehicle.
The Cadillac likely dropped from the top of the list to sixth due to additional theft-prevention features including a steering wheel lock and inclination sensor for the alarm, but GM's other fullsize trucks and SUVs still occupy eight of the list's 10 spots. Some of the least stolen vehicles with below-average loss payments include the Lexus HS250h, Hyundai Tucson, Honda CR-V and Dodge Journey. A homeowners' association in New York is suing two of its residents for parking their pickup truck in their own driveway. David and Arna Orlando of Manlius, NY, are facing a lawsuit from the Kimry Moor Homeowners Association for parking their black 2014 Ford F-150 pickup in their own driveway. The Orlandos own their home, but common areas such as their driveway are managed by their HOA, which limits what vehicles can park in the open. They only allow "private, passenger-type, pleasure automobiles" to park outside of a garage. David Orlando says his pickup is a personal passenger vehicle and that the rule is silly. He also feels he is being unfairly targeted. A Syracuse.com reporter drove around the Orlandos' neighborhood and saw another fullsize pickup parked in another driveway, along with a large van and SUV. The Orlandos said in court documents that the pickup is registered as a private vehicle and neither of them have commercial drivers' licenses. The lawsuit was filed in August 2013 and is still in the discovery phase. Depositions are up next. New York seems to have gone power-mad when it comes to regulating common driveway activities. In a Garden City, NY, neighborhood last year police were called when two men began washing a new Volkswagen "in public view", which was against a local ordinance.
