Ford previews updated Police Interceptor Utility for Chicago debut

With more law enforcement agencies across the United States alone than we'd care to count (or ever encounter), selling police cars means big business for American automakers, with Ford, Chevy and Dodge competing to fill the motorpools of every police department, sheriff's office and government agency in the land. For its part, Ford offers the Taurus-based Police Interceptor sedan and the Explorer-based Police Interceptor Utility, and it's preparing to unveil a revised version of the latter at the upcoming Chicago Auto Show in the same city where it's built. Dearborn hasn't given us much to go on with this teaser, showing just a darkened front shot of the vehicle in question with its emergency lighting all aglow. But it's fairly clear that the Interceptor Utility has been given many of the same updates applied recently to the Explorer on which it's based. That starts with the revised sheet metal, but considering that the Interceptor Utility exclusively packs V6 power, the 2.3-liter EcoBoost four that was one of the biggest updates to the civilian Explorer isn't likely to carry over. Ford does, however, promise that the revised Police Interceptor Utility will be "even better" than the model it replaces" and pack "more high-tech features." Related Video:

Inside Ford's high-tech climate chamber

There are two ways an automaker can test its vehicles in extreme climates: it can send said vehicle around the world – from Death Valley to the Arctic Circle – in search of the harshest weather, or it can recreate those conditions in an enclosed environment. We're sure that many automakers undertake some combination of both, but in this latest video clip, Ford shows us around inside it's state-of-the-art climate chamber. At its Driveability Test Facility in Allen Park, MI – inaugurated in 2010 just across the street from the Roush Technology Center – Ford can simulate all sorts of extreme conditions. It can drop the temperature down to -40 degrees Fahrenheit or raise it up to 130, and take it up to a simulated 12,000 feet above sea level or drop it down to 280 feet below. blast it with 150-mile-per-hour winds. It can control the level of humidity, approximate the intensity of the sun and even blast the test vehicle with artificial snow, just like your favorite ski resort. The facility strikes us as an engineering feat as impressive as some of the vehicles it's used to test, but don't take our word for it – scope it out for yourself in this brief two-minute video clip, which even includes some helpful tips for winter driving this holiday season and beyond. EVs are helping eliminate Detroit's gas-guzzling problem. Some revivals of gas-powered classics are getting the EV treatment.  But not every revived model looks exactly like its original counterpart. We're in a new era of hulking Detroit metal, and you can thank EVs. Americans can't get enough of their big, beefy trucks and SUVs. But for many years, some of the biggest gas guzzlers fell out of fashion as gas prices rose and emissions regulations tightened. But in the past few years, some of the most iconic American truck nameplates have been brought back to life with electric motors, like the GMC Hummer. In other cases, as with the Ford Bronco, improvements in engine technology and more interest in rugged adventure vehicles made a gas-powered revival possible. Even some revivals that started as gas-powered, like the Chevy Blazer and the Jeep Wagoneer, are now getting electrified spinoffs.
