Up for auction is my 1990 Notchback racecar.  I purchased this car several years ago out of Florida.  There are no rust issues or body damage, only the minor bumps and scratches you would expect for a vehicle this old.  This car started life as a 4 cylinder gas saver but has been transformed into a 1/4 mile dragcar.  The engine is a NMRA legal Pure Street 306 built by Ronnie Wilson out of Florida.  It has a Mexican 302 block, lightweight Scat crank and I beam rods, custom pistons with a custom NA ring package,Trick Flow twisted wedge heads completely hand ported with Jessel shaft mount rocker arms, custom Bullet hydraulic cam with Motorsport lifters and Trick Flow push rods, Eldelbrock Victor Jr intake with a Wilson spacer, Quick Fuel 650 carb, Canton pro oil pan, Kooks 1 3/4"  headers and a full MSD ignition.

Trans is a PA comp auto with a trans specialties 8" converter, JW Wheel, trans shield and a PA bullet proof bellhousing.
Fuel system is a BG 400 with a BG regulator.  RJS 5 gallon fuel cell with -12 to the filter -10 to the regulator and -8 to the carb.
Chassis has a MS 8 point cage, UPR K member, A arms, coilover kit with 90/10/struts and cc plates.  There is a Flaming River manual rack with solid motor mounts.  Rear has Lakewood drag shocks, Eibach drag springs, Southside lift bars.  The 8.8 rearend has Moser spool, c clip eliminators, Motorsport 4:30 gearset, welded tubes, aluminum driveshaft and cover.  The rear chassis also has alot of extra bracing and welds.
Wheels are Prostar 15x10 and 15 x 4 with 26" MT slicks and Hoosier front runners.
New opitima battery, Griffin radiator, Jegs manual brake conversion, Biondo line lock, CRS waterpump, ATI superdampner, custom alt bracket, ARC control panel, Kirkey seat, safety harness, Autometer gauges and a Hurst quarter stick shifter.  There is upgraded front and rear brakes with 5 lug all around.
This car has 18 1/4 miles passes since it was completed.  Its runs very consistant 11.50 s at about 120 mph.  It is a well built/ maintained car that is ready to race today, needs nothing.  This is a great bracket car or use it to get into drag racing without spending a fortune.  The reason for selling, no time to enjoy the car.  I have set the reserve price well below what it would cost to build the car.  Any questions or if you want additional pics, contact me through EBAY.  I have a clear Michigan title in my name for the car.  The trailer for this car will be available to the buyer at an additional cost.  Thanks for looking and good luck.

The fascinating forgotten civil defense history of Mister Softee trucks

Mon, 26 Aug 2013

Hemmings came across an interesting article from the Throwin' Wrenches blog about the intersection of ice cream, cars and civic duty in America's late 1950s. In particular, it focuses on the Mister Softee trucks, which criss-crossed neighborhoods of the eastern US serving ice cream. Looking past the ultra-durable vehicles used - heavy-duty Ford-based chassis, for what it's worth - the article delves into some deeper national-security territory.
See, Mister Softee truck owners were voluntary members of the Civil Defense, thanks to all the useful stuff (potable water, generators, freezers and fridges) that the machines carried with them for serving ice cream. Click over to Throwin' Wrenches for the full run down of how Mister Softee would have stepped in to help fight if the Cold War ever turned a little hotter.

Ford Green Zone works magic with GPS to make your drive smarter, cleaner

Fri, Aug 29 2014

For the most part, plug-in hybrids rely on the power stored in the battery until that charge is depleted. Unless the switch can be changed manually, it's only then that the cars fire up the internal combustion engine and begin using the fossil fuels on board. This is ideal, of course, when one's drive isn't long enough that the car needs to start sipping gasoline at all. On longer commutes, when it's certain that the route is longer than the car's all-electric range, this isn't necessarily the most efficient use of energy. Ford's Green Zone system is designed to save some of that juice for the parts of the drive that require slower speeds. Ford is working on a smart system, based on Nokia mapping technology, that uses GPS data to use both the electricity and conventional fuel more efficiently. Since battery power is less efficient at highway speeds, Ford's Green Zone system is designed to save some of that juice for the parts of the drive that require slower speeds, rather than just using up all the electrons right at the beginning of the drive. Using a website or the in-car navigation system, the driver can pinpoint the parts of the route, highlighted in green, where using battery power would be more effective, and set the car to automatically switch to electricity for those sections. Depending on the route, the car could automatically switch back and forth between the two power sources multiple times, particularly if the drive is a mix between city and highway driving. Of course, Green Zone will be go beyond that. The program is being developed to take traffic and road grade into account, details that allow the car to be make even smarter choices to improve efficiency. Ford even hopes to have Green Zone learn driver habits, and respond accordingly depending on who is driving the car. The system could control other features as well, such as anticipating corners and shifting the headlights to better illuminate the road ahead. Green Zone could also potentially use information from vehicle-to-vehicle networking to control functions in the car. The Green Zone system still has a few years before it will be ready to be put into production vehicles, but Ford is confident it will make its way onto the road eventually. As with other innovations that improve efficiency and make our vehicles smarter, we can expect to see similar technology from other manufacturers, until it becomes a regular part of driving in the future.
