Marti report and original window sticker with $5,585.77 MSRP . . .

The glass smooth, shiny finish you see on the hood in this picture is the original factory applied Gold Glow metallic paint.

1974 Ford LTD Brougham 4-door pillared hardtop.  The original buyer purchased this beautiful LTD brand new on July 19, 1974 from Rick Warner Ford in Salt Lake City.  They then drove the car, what we believe to be 108,379 miles, original miles, owning it until the fall of last year.  Now saying that, the car physically appears like a car with 8,379 miles on it but we just cannot prove that it only has 8,379 miles. If what we believe is true, this car has been babied for 40 years and kept in immaculate original condition. All bright work and exterior soft trim shows like new and the original vinyl top looks spectacular, with not a single rip or tear.  Obviously stored indoors its entire life, the interior is just as remarkable and you will not find any rust, anywhere on this car.  All original metal throughout that has never rusted . . .

Check out the panel fit.  Never been in a wreck, not even a parking lot mishap.

Factory fresh condition at this level is what happens when an established middle aged couple buys a new Ford, stores it in a garage, gives it OCD maintenance and averages 51 miles a week for four decades.  51 miles is about right for stopping by the grocery store, an occasional visit to see grandchildren and to church and back on Sunday.  Did you think all those "only driven to church on Sundays" stories were true?  This one, likely is . . .

Look at the chrome, the pretty glass.  Doors, hood and trunk open easily and close solid.  Keyways turn silky smooth like new.

This LTD drives and functions as well as it looks.  No exaggeration; you literally tap the key and the big 460 springs to life so smooth and silent, you'll roll down the window to confirm it's running.  Click the "SelectShift Cruise-O-Matic" in Drive and float away on your private land barge.  The LTD ornament looks far away, at the end of a very long hood and unlike most 41 year old vehicles, you don't sink into a worn out seat cushion.  These folks didn't smoke either and if you think about it hard enough, you might catch a whiff of new car . . .

Zero sun or weather damage doesn't happen parked outside for 41 years.

It's not so much a trunk as it is a cargo hold - probably fit a carry-on in there.  And a Fiat . . .

Exquisite fit and finish, from any angle.

The Gold Glow metallic paint was actually a $38 option and it polishes to a near new shine.  The car goes, steers and stops like brand new . . .

Highest quality, best preserved 4-door LTD on the planet?

On Monday, June 17, 1974, Mr. & Mrs. Olson put $100 down on a brand new 1974 Ford LTD Brougham they selected from inventory on the lot at Rick Warner Ford in Salt Lake City, Utah.  On a Friday a month later (7-19-74) Mrs. Olson signed a sales contract for $5,497.56.  George worked over the salesman pretty good, scoring a rear defogger, gold landau bars, heavy duty shocks, door edge guards, floor mats and a locking gas cap in the deal.  The following Monday, July 22, Mrs. Olson arrived at the dealership with a check from UTELCO Credit Union in the amount of $5,398.56, reflecting the $100 down payment previously received.  Dealer equipment installation complete, a Utah temporary tag was affixed the next morning (dated the previous day of signing) and Mr. and Mrs. Olson took delivery, leaving downtown Salt Lake City and arriving home about 15 minutes later in Midvale, Utah.  The permanent plates came in the mail the following Tuesday in a license plate size envelope.

I'm able to tell this very accurate story because we have complete documentation for all the above, plus a lot more.  The dealer installed door edge guards and locking gas cap are still on the car!  The 460 starts instantly and hauls the big Brougham to freeway speeds smooth and effortlessly.  The C-6 automatic shifts perfectly, there is no wander or pulling and the brakes stop the car drama free.  As far as I can tell, everything but the clock works exactly as it did in 1974.  Whatever value some may put on the distinction, the truth remains; this 1974 Ford LTD is probably the best preserved, highest quality 4-door Brougham on the planet.

                                                                                                                                                                                        -Foy

If it looks like 1974, it must be 1974.

Near showroom condition interior with remote control outside mirrors, 6-way power driver's seat, rim-blow horn, "Fingertip" cruise control, air conditioning and dual rear speakers . . .

Look at that upholstery quality.  Most old cars actually look old behind the steering wheel.  See any aging going on in here?

This car also has the optional reclining split bench front seat with fold-down center armrests . . .

Extremely low mileage.

There it is;  08,378 and I had to steer the boss away from the idea of only having 8,378 miles because we could not document it.  Difficult to do considering this LTD shows little evidence of high miles.  We just have to assume that it is 108,378 however, that is still very, very low mileage.  It works out to a little over 2,600 a year.  Or 220 a month.  51 miles a week or barely 7 miles a day.  How ever you divide it, the mileage on this car is ultra low . . .and if someone who has verification of it not being over 100k miles, wouldn't that be cool. It sure looks like it.

460/4v V8 Engine (7.5 liter)

 195 horsepower @ 3,800

335 ft-lb torque @ 2,600 rpm

Besides a little paint flaking on the air cleaner snorkel, this is how it looked in 1974.  And if you are of a certain age (like me) you remember when LTDs were seemingly everywhere.  In the ocean of 351 and 400 powered full size Fords during this time, you have to wonder how many got the big 460.  Ford sold a lot of LTDs, especially in the '70s.  I Googled it and came up with 561,473 Customs, Galaxies, LTDs and wagons produced in 1974.  302,627 of those were LTDs but just 4,633 Brougham 4-doors got the 7.5 liter engine and a tiny 419 came from the Salt Lake City ordering district.  Bottom line; very few LTDs came with this engine . . .

Honest condition undercarriage.

All we did was give it a good power wash and wipe it down with some cleaner.  Not a single spec of rust or corrosion of any kind.

Ford rethinking vehicle launch strategy

Tue, 07 May 2013

With a new boss at the helm, Ford is looking at new ways to improve its vehicle launches in North America to prevent recent issues that have popped up with models like the Lincoln MKZ, Ford Escape and Ford Fusion. Speaking with Automotive News, Ford's new president of the Americas, Joe Hinrichs, revealed a few ways the automaker plans to avoid early build issues such as the engine fires on certain 2013 Escape and Fusion models and months-long delays for customers to receive their MKZs.
It sounds like the root of the problems may have been Ford's relationship with suppliers compounded by the fact that the product surge came on the heels of the recent industry-crippling recession, and in the AN article, Hinrichs says improvements are being made to reduce problems during the launch of new or redesigned models. Three such improvements that were implemented during the first quarter of this year including more rigorous quality comparisons, better use of computer technology to catch major problems sooner and hiring engineers to work closer with suppliers.

Cadillac Escalade gets $5,000 discount to ward off Lincoln Navigator

Wed, Nov 8 2017

General Motors apparently isn't going to let early good reception for the redesigned Lincoln Navigator steal thunder from its own luxury SUV without a fight. It's offering a $5,000 discount on the purchase or lease of the Cadillac Escalade this month to any buyer who trades in a 1999 or newer Lincoln model, Bloomberg reports. GM spokesman Jim Cain told Bloomberg the incentive is being offered to keep prices competitive for the Escalade. The 2018 Navigator starts at $72,055, compared to $73,995 for the Escalade, but the outgoing version of the Navigator is selling for an average of around $53,000, compared with more than $80,000 on average for the Escalade, he said. The Escalade was the top-selling domestic luxury SUV in October and No. 4 in the segment, according to Motor Intelligence. It far outsold the Navigator, which last saw a refresh in 2015 and a full redesign in 2007. But Ford is hoping to gain back some ground with the new Navigator and updated Expedition, which also trails the Chevrolet Tahoe and Chevy Suburban in its segment. Bloomberg notes that one Morgan Stanley analyst estimates that GM owns a $2 billion annual pretax profit edge in the lucrative luxury sport utility segment. Our recent First Drive review called the new Navigator "far superior to its primary competitor, the Cadillac Escalade."Related Video:

Bill Ford op-ed argues we can't just build and sell more of the same cars

Thu, 10 Jul 2014

It's hardly a secret that the auto industry is undergoing an enormous, tectonic shift in the way it thinks, builds cars and does business. Between alternative forms of energy, a renewed focus on low curb weights and aerodynamic bodies, the advent of driverless and autonomous cars and the need to reduce the our impact on the environment, it's very likely that the car that's built 10 years down the line will be scarcely recognizable when parked next to the car from 10 years ago.
Few people are as able to explain the industry's many upcoming changes and challenges as clearly as William Clay Ford, Jr., better known as Bill Ford. The 57-year-old currently sits as the executive chairman of the company his great-grandfather, Henry Ford, founded over 110 years ago.
In an op-ed piece in The Wall Street Journal (subscription required), Ford explains that the role of automakers is, necessarily, going to change to suit the needs of the future world. That means changing the view of not just the automobile, but the automaker. As Ford explains it, automakers will "move from being just car and truck manufacturers to become personal-mobility companies."
