Ford bringing C-Max Solar Energi Concept to CES
Thu, 02 Jan 2014Solar energy might not be enough to power a usable electric vehicle on its own, but that doesn't mean it can't lend a helping hand. And that's what Ford has in store for the Consumer Electronics Show opening next week in Las Vegas.
Ford has essentially taken its C-Max Energi plug-in hybrid and fitted it with the latest in solar panel technology developed by SunPower, acting like a magnifying glass to capture as much of the sun's energy as possible. So you get the benefit of an electric vehicle, with the range assurance of a hybrid, without needing to draw from the grid.
Ford estimates that a day of charging in the sunshine will give the C-Max Solar Energi concept the same full charge as the production PHEV, with a total range of 620 miles - 21 of which can be run on electric power alone. Otherwise the vehicle - which remains a concept for the time being - is identical to the existing C-Max Energi. The top-selling model in Ford's growing hybrid and electric vehicle portfolio helps put Ford just behind Toyota among the top seller of hybrids in America. There'll still be plenty of rumors, reports and video footage to bring you. Like this, the first non-official footage of the new pony car in the wild.
Shot by YouTube user SotA1080 and dug up by our friends at CarBuzz, this clip shows the new Mustang posing for photos (alongside other Mustangs) and starting up its engine at the most recent gathering of Cars & Coffee in Irvine, CA. And this being the GT model, it's not packing the V6 or the turbo four, but the red-blooded 5.0-liter V8 that tells us and enthusiasts worldwide that the new Mustang has not lost its way. 2016 Ford Police Interceptor Utility shows up for duty in Chicago
Fri, Feb 13 2015The latest upgrade for the 2016 Ford Police Interceptor Utility is all set to patrol the Windy City's streets with its debut at the 2015 Chicago Auto Show. On the outside, the revised Ford police vehicle looks basically the same as the recently refreshed Explorer with a new grille and redesigned headlights. Inside, there's a restyled steering wheel and center console. Unlike the civilian model, though, the PI Utility gets heavy-duty brakes, a more robust cooling system, reinforced subframe mounts and larger diameter suspension springs for more strength. Under the hood, police forces get to choose between either a 3.7-liter V6 with 304 horsepower and 279 pound-feet of torque or a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 with 365 hp and 350 lb-ft of twist. Regardless of powertrain, these 'utes feature a six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The transmission includes the awesome-sounding Pursuit Mode feature that switches over to more aggressive shifts when it detects harder driving to properly stop crime. Related Video:
