Up for bid is a 1968 Ford Fairlane 500 4 door.   This car started out as a 390 Y-code with an automatic C-6 and 9 inch rearend.  The car had been sitting in a southern Iowa barn since 1982.    Mice had done their work to the interior seats and headliner as well as a nest on the engine.   The original 390 was stuck and the transmission would not shift out of Park.   Even the 9 inch rear end was stuck!    This car was loaded.   Power steering,  power disc brakes, factory air-conditioning, rear window defrost, remote mirror, and of course the big block with automatic tranny.

The car was had some surface rust from moisture dripping on the front fenders and hood as well as the roof.  No rot thru though.  Patina.    There is one small rust hole behind the rear wheel well openings on both sides.  I originally bought this car to part out but it was too solid to knock it in the head.   So,  I started out to make a daily driver out of it.   I drove it for 1 summer 2 years ago and parked it inside for the last year.   Here is what was done to make it a daily driver.

I installed a rebuilt 302 with J-code intake.  Block and heads are 1970.   1969 C-4 transmission installed.  Correct shift linkage used as well as driveshaft.   8" rearend installed.   New brakes lines from front to back installed.   New front end kit installed.  (upper and lower control arms etc.)   All professional lined up at shop.   New shocks.   Large sway bars front and back installed.  (handles like a slot car.  I call it my "police pkg")  Gas tank from a running 69' Torino installed with rust free fuel line installed.  New brakes front and back.  Rotors and drums turned.   New calipers and rubber brake lines.  New power brake booster and new master brake cylinder.  New wheel brake cylinders.  Recored small block radiator installed.   Engine bay sandblasted and repainted.    Full dual exhaust custom fitted by professional shop with turbo mufflers.  Nice sound.    Engine and tranny run great.   Electronic ignition.   Air-condition not hooked up yet.  New 600 cfm carb.  new battery.

Interior:   I had the front and rear seats re-upholstered.   I put a 69' Ford Torino factory air-conditioning dash in as I like the woodgrain better.   69' Torino GT steering column added.  New carpet.    The interior was originally blue but its all been switched to black now using factory parts.  I have the headliner,  just haven't installed it yet.  I've installed an am-fm-8 track player that was refurbished and converted to play an ipod with a jack in the back to hook your ipod to.  Olds school equalizer booster.  New speakers for rear with aftermarket stereo speaker in factory dash location.

Factory paint is the aqua color.  I sanded down the patina and rattle canned some primer-sealer on the surface rust.   Torque boxes,  frame rails and floor pans are rust free.  The only spot on the floor pan was a small area behind the rear seat that mice had built a nest there.  It was a little weak so I cut it out and patched it.  I think there is a leak in the cowl area as I had a little water come it after going thru a car wash 2 years ago.  Oh,  by the way,  ac-heater box replaced with good one from running 69' Fairlane 500 with new heater core installed at that time.    The car will need the front windshield replaced at some time as someone has shot at it with a bb-gun while it was sitting in the barn for years.    If you have any questions which are not described hear,  please drop me a line.   I would hate to see this be a parts car but that is up to the new owner.   It really is a nice car.   Just don't have the time to finish it.    Drove it a couple of times this fall with no issues but did discover that I have a power steering hose leak.

Shelby Cobra, Mercedes 300SL and 1947 Woodie from Petersen Museum headed to auction

Mon, 29 Jul 2013

The changes happening at the Petersen Museum have been making the rounds in major press, but it probably won't be until August 18, during Pebble Beach, when we get the full story on what's happening; that's where and when museum reps plan on announcing the way forward for the SoCal institution. In the meantime, the museum is still reorganizing its collection, and that means auctioning some of its showpieces at this weekend's Auctions America event in Burbank.
Three of the stars are a 1964 Shelby Cobra 289, one of less than 20 produced with a three-speed C-4 automatic transmission, a 1960 Mercedes-Benz 300SL owned by actor Robert Stack and the last 1948 Ford Sportsman 'Woodie' ever produced. The Cobra, now restored to its original white exterior and red leather interior, was a factory demonstrator that first sold for $5,250. Showing just 38,950 miles on the odometer, its pre-sale estimate is $800,000 to $1 million.
The 300SL is actually a 1957 model but wasn't titled until Robert Stack took possession in 1960. The lead actor in the The Untouchables TV series used to drive by the Sunset Boulevard Mercedes dealership to ogle the car, but couldn't justify spending the money to buy it. When he and the producer of The Untouchables won Emmys for the show, the producer, who happened to be Desi Arnaz, bought the car for Stack. He owned it his whole life, it has been left as Stack drove it and still bears the California license plate "UNTCHBL."

Fiat boss Elkann being mentored by... Bill Ford?

Tue, 26 Mar 2013

Fiat Chairman John Elkann has been turning to an unusual source for advice on the car business. While speaking during an interview with The Detroit News, Elkann said he often asks Bill Ford Jr. for advice on how to proceed with the turnaround at Chrysler. "It's great to have the opportunity to share this with someone like Bill, who has experienced many things and gone through many things ... especially linked to Detroit." Elkann said.
As the Agnelli family heir, Elkann has inherited a long and fruitful friendship with the Ford family. While Giovanni Agnelli built his first Fiat four years before Henry Ford created his first vehicle, it was Ford that showed Agnelli the benefits of mass production and helped pave the way for what would become the Fiat empire.
Giovanni's grandson, Gianni, helped mentor Bill Ford when he was elected chairman of Ford Motor Company. Now, Ford is returning the favor by helping Elkann navigate the automotive industry's tumultuous waters.

SEMA crowns Mustang, FR-S as this year's hottest cars in the building

Wed, 31 Oct 2012

After wrapping up the first day of the 2012 SEMA Show, organizers handed out awards for some of the trendiest vehicles on display. Since the whole point of SEMA is to show off new products available in the aftermarket world for use in cars, trucks and SUVs, each year, the show distinguishes the most popular vehicle in various segments. Not surprisingly, this year's Hottest Car and Hottest Sport Compact are the Ford Mustang and Scion FR-S, respectively, while the Ford F-Series brought home the Hottest Truck and the Jeep Wrangler was named the Hottest 4x4-SUV.
More than 2,000 companies are at this year's show, and the display booths represents a "vote" for each car to determing the trendiest vehicles in each of the four categories. It isn't clear if these awards also take cars brought by OEMs into account, but the Mustang and FR-S were definitely well represented by both OEM and aftermarket show versions.
As usual, the OEMs showed up in force at the this year's SEMA Show exhibiting a variety of cars ranging from production-intent cars like the beastly Ford Mustang Cobra Jet to much flashier rides like Scion's Carbon Stealth FR-S.
