Most people dont know that Ford had a Platinum option way before the current offering in their lineup.  In 2001 the Platinum SuperDuty was sold mainly in the southwest United States and I happened to be living there when they arrived, but had to wait a few years for a nice used one to become available.  In 2006 I finally had the opportunity to grab this one and took the next few years to get her into her current state...

-tinted windows all around except windshield
-triple pillar with Autometer Pro-Comp silver gauges; Trans temp, Boost pressure, and Exhaust temp
-PSP custom chip with; Economy, High Idle, Quiet Idle, Towing, and Performance options
-Dual Sears Platinum AGM batteries to completely eliminate terminal corrosion
-4 inch Icon lift kit with adjustable trac bar
-Bilstein off-road shocks at all four corners
-20x9 chrome Helo Hulk wheels
-35x13.5 ProComp Extreme All-Terrain tires; two at 50% one at 75% and one brand new
-Spray-in bedliner
-5 inch MBRP straight-piped exhaust
-huge AFE washable airfilter
-Ford ambulance upper radiator hose allows belt swap without losing coolant

...after those mods, we wanted to set the truck up to last and added a few carefully chosen mods to help with towing and longevity;

-Airlift 5000 airbags to level out the rear when towing, or hauling.
-B&W pop-up gooseneck hitch with in-bed trailer outlet
-6 inch drop Rapid Hitch for bumper pulls
-Tekonsha Electric trailer brake controller
-In-dash switch makes factory EBPV an amazing engine brake for downhill towing
-Ford 6.0 Diesel Intercooler
-Ford 6.0 Diesel Transmission cooler
-Caterpillar Extended Life Engine Coolant
-external Caterpillar Coolant filter
-external Caterpillar Transmission filter

Long story short...we bought this truck and set it up as our "last truck" but we have recently simplified our lives to where we no longer tow anything of substance, and firing this beast up to drive 3 miles to the post office is not in anyones best interest.

EPA says fuel economy test for hybrids is accurate

Mon, 26 Aug 2013

The EPA says it stands behind its fuel economy test for hybrid vehicles following controversy about the testing process after Ford C-Max Hybrid customers and automotive journalists alike struggled to achieve 47 miles per gallon, the advertised mpg number, Automotive News reports. Ford responded to the issue almost two weeks ago by claiming that a 1970s-era EPA general label rule was responsible for the inaccurate mileage numbers, rerating the C-Max Hybrid's mpg numbers and offering customers rebates. Ford later said it didn't overstate the C-Max Hybrid's fuel economy and that it was surprised by the low numbers.
Ford technically didn't do anything wrong because it was following the general label rule, but agency regulator Christopher Grundler says the automaker was exploiting a loophole when it came up with the hybrid C-Max numbers, and that the testing process remains accurate. The general label rule allows vehicles that use the same engine and transmission and are in the same weight class to share fuel economy numbers, but it doesn't take into account other factors such as aerodynamic efficiency, which affects hybrids more drastically than non-hybrid vehicles. Ford originally used the Fusion Hybrid economy figures for the C-Max Hybrid and claimed the engineers didn't realize that its aerodynamic efficiency would affect fuel economy as much as it did.

MotorWeek relives '80s coupes with Dodge Daytona, Ford Escort EXP

Thu, Aug 6 2015

Get ready for a wave of nostalgia and the rapid realization of the huge progress in performance cars over the last 30 years. For its latest Retro Review, MotorWeek takes a look back at two, front-wheel drive coupes from the '80s that seem to have entirely vanished from the roads today. Both the 1986 Dodge Daytona CS and the 1986.5 Ford Escort EXP were considered affordable, sporty options in their day, but the passage of time hasn't been kind to either of their specs. The Daytona certainly looks the part of a performance machine with a body that's reminiscent of other '80s coupes, like the third-gen Chevrolet Camaro. However with 146 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque from a 2.2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, acceleration wasn't exactly a strong suit. MotorWeek complained about copious torque steer, as well. The optional CS suspension upgrade package on this Daytona was apparently a nod to Carroll Shelby who was working with Dodge at the time. If anything, the Escort EXP withstands the test of time even worse. As a two-seat coupe, you might have expected Ford's engineers to really turn up the performance to fit the sporty image that the exterior conveyed. That didn't really happen, and depending on which model buyers ordered, they got either 86 horsepower with a 1.9-liter engine or the "high-output" version of that mill with 108 hp.

2015 Ford Mustang to offer solid-rear axle, sort of

Tue, 17 Dec 2013

One of the biggest knocks against the last Ford Mustang was its solid-rear axle. Not one to actively court criticism, Ford dutifully swapped out the old-fashioned rear end for something a bit more modern in the redesigned 2015 Mustang, adding an independent rear suspension across the board.
While an IRS Mustang is great news for those that value handling and ride comfort, there's one big group that it's bad news for - drag racers. See, a solid-rear axle is a big deal for drag racers, because not only is it more durable and cheaper, but it's better for the hard launches that can make or break a race.
To satiate this vocal demographic, Ford will sell a body-in-white version of the Stang, complete with a nine-inch rear axle, that will debut at the 2014 Performance Racing Industry show. The news came from gas2.org, which cited an unnamed employee of Ford Racing at this year's PRI show.
