The newly redesigned F-150 has a new look as well as extensive mechanical changes. All trims now have a larger, more imposing front end, modeled after Ford's Super Duty Trucks, and a taller, chunkier appearance throughout.
The F-150's interior has been rounded out a bit but is still as durable as the exterior. Three different cab configurations (Regular Cab, Super Cab and Super Crew), three box options (67 inches, 78.8 inches and 97.4 inches) and seven different trims are available to fit the specific needs of pickup users. The F-150's engine lineup consists entirely of V8s. The base 4.6L 2-valve engine makes 248 horsepower at 4750 rpm and 294 pounds-feet of torque at 4000 rpm. A 4.6L 3-valve engine produces 292 horsepower at 5700 rpm and 320 pounds-feet of torque at 4000 rpm. At the top, there's a 5.4L 3-valve Triton V8 with variable cam timing that is capable of delivering 320 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 390 pounds-feet of torque at 3500 rpm. The 4.6L 2-valve engine comes mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission. The other engines come standard with a new, more responsive 6-speed automatic transmission. Ford says that the 2-valve engine gets the same fuel economy as the V6 that it replaces. Throughout the line, buyers have a choice of rear wheel drive or 4-wheel drivetrain. The F-150 is offered in a total of seven trims: the basic XL "workhorse", the sporty STX, the off-road-oriented FX2 and FX4, the mid-range XLT, the luxury-appointed Lariat, the luxury-appointed King Ranch and the new, very upscale Platinum.
There are over 50 combinations of trims, lengths, engines and other features that are available for the F-150. The F-150 features numerous standard safety features, including driver and front passenger airbags, Safety Canopy side curtain air bags, dual stage front seat-mounted side air bags, AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control, 4-wheel anti-lock brakes and SecuriLock passive anti-theft system. Available safety options include Ford's Post Crash Alert System, SecuriCode Keyless Entry Keypad, MyKey programmable parental control vehicle key, a rearview camera system and an integrated trailer-brake controller. The 2010 F-150 has earned top safety ratings from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway SafetyAlso of note for 2010 is the F-150's interior, which is caters well to those who spend much of their work day in their truck. More than 30 storage areas are now available inside, and the longer center console now has enough space for two laptops or plenty of file folders. Large buttons and switches are ergonomically designed and within easy reach and view of the driver. A USB port and auxiliary MP3 player input are conveniently mounted on the dash. Two 12-volt outlets are located on the dash and center console.Standard equipment and options run the gamut. The base XL trim has vinyl upholstery and a vinyl floor and features air conditioning, tilt steering and AM/FM stereo. On the other end of the spectrum, the Platinum trim get 20-inch, 16-spoke polished aluminum wheels and a satin chrome grille with fine mesh, along with brushed aluminum interior panels and ash wood grain panels for the dash. Noteworthy options at the top of the range include voice-activated navigation with a high-contrast 8-inch display screen (up from a 6.5-inch screen), Sirius Travel Link, Ford SYNC and a 700-watt, 10-speaker Sony surround-sound system. Thirteen different wheel designs are offered across the lineup, along with several special paint schemes. The special licensed Harley-Davidson truck comes as a Super Crew and features the 5.4L 3-valve Triton V8 engine. The truck also includes 22-inch polished, forged aluminum wheels (yes, 22-inch), chrome twin-tip exhaust, blacked-out headlamps, smoked tail lamps, deployable running boards, and an exterior color called Lava, a deep maroon paint with 3-metal flake. Harley-Davidson badging and stitching is prominent throughout

Ford confirms 1.5-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine for 2014 Fusion
Thu, 11 Apr 2013Earlier this week, reports were swirling 'round the internet about the 2014 Ford Fusion getting a new 1.5-liter three-cylinder EcoBoost engine. That was... half correct. Ford today confirmed that the 2014 Fusion is, in fact, getting a new 1.5-liter EcoBoost mill, but it has four cylinders, not three.
The new 1.5-liter engine will be the fifth EcoBoost powerplant from Ford Motor Company. Initially to be built at the automaker's Craiova, Romania plant, it will also be offered in the Fusion's twin, the Mondeo, in other markets. This engine will debut at the Shanghai Motor Show next month, and the 1.5-liter is of particular importance in the Chinese market - there is significant tax relief in the People's Republic for vehicles powered by engines with a capacity of 1.5 liters or less.
At a media briefing Thursday, Ford declined to divulge exact power or fuel economy numbers, though Joe Bakaj, vice president of powertrain engineering, told Autoblog that power output should be similar to that of the current 1.6-liter inline-four, and that overall efficiency will be "better than the 1.6." Our earlier report stated that the 1.5-liter four will produce 177 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque - losses of 1 hp and 7 lb-ft versus the 1.6-liter engine. Ford states that the 1.5-liter four will feature many of the same technologies used on the company's 1.0-liter EcoBoost inline-three, including an integrated exhaust manifold that recaptures much of the engine's heat.
V6 engines will outpace V8s for the 2015 Ford F-150
Wed, 23 Jul 2014How times have changed. Even five years ago, who would have thought the mighty V8 would be just another engine choice for buyers of the 2015 Ford F-150?
Ford is projecting about 28 percent of the next-generation trucks will have the 5.0-liter V8. That's nothing to sneeze at, but consider this: Ford figures its two EcoBoost truck engines - the new 2.7-liter V6 and the existing 3.5-liter V6 - will also each account for about 28 percent of the F-150's sales (56 percent total). That leaves only 15 percent of the pie for the 3.5-liter (non-EcoBoost) V6. The new F-150 goes on sale late this year.

Big electric trucks won't save the planet, says the NYT
Tue, Feb 21 2023When The New York Times decides that an issue is an issue, be prepared to read about it at length. Rarely will a week passes these days when the esteemed news organization doesn’t examine the realities, myths and alleged benefits and drawbacks of electric vehicles, and even The Atlantic joins in sometimes. That revolution, marked by changes in manufacturing, consumer habits and social “consciousness,” may in fact be upon us. Or it may not. Nonetheless, the newspaper appears committed to presenting to the public these pros and cons. In this recently published article titled, “Just How Good for the Planet Is That Big Electric Pickup Truck?”—wow, thatÂ’s a mouthful — the Times focuses on the “bigness” of the current and pending crop of EVs, and how that impacts or will impact the environment and road safety. This is not what news organizations these days are fond of calling “breaking news.” In October, we pointed to an essay in The Atlantic that covered pretty much the same ground, and focused on the Hummer as one particular villain, In the paper and online on Feb. 18, the Times' Elana Shao observes how “swapping a gas pickup truck for a similar electric one can produce significant emissions savings.” She goes on: “Take the Ford F-150 pickup truck compared with the electric F-150 Lightning. The electric versions are responsible for up to 50 percent less greenhouse gas emissions per mile.” But she right away flips the argument, noting the heavier electric pickup trucks “often require bigger batteries and more electricity to charge, so they end up being responsible for more emissions than other smaller EVs. Taking into consideration the life cycle emissions per mile, they end up just as polluting as some smaller gas-burning cars.” Certainly, itÂ’s been drummed into our heads that electric cars donÂ’t run on air and water but on electricity that costs money, and that the public will be dealing with “the shift toward electric SUVs, pickup trucks and crossover vehicles, with some analysts estimating that SUVs, pickup trucks and vans could make up 78 percent of vehicle sales by 2025." No-brainer alert: Big vehicles cost more to charge. And then thereÂ’s the safety question, which was cogently addressed in the Atlantic story. Here Shao reiterates data documenting the increased risks of injuries and deaths caused by larger, heavier vehicles.
