GENERAL

Fresh and complete rebuild. EZ wiring, powder coated frame, Flaming River column, Banjo steering wheel, new block hugger headers, Flow Master exhaust, Ford Expedition Wheels, Lokar shifter, new wiper arms, blades and motor, reverse tilt hood, Mopar distributor with an HEI conversion instead of the old gold box and ballast resistor. Gas tank moved out of the cab and put under the bed. Bight Orange color that makes it very hard to lose in a crowd.

SUSPENSION

TCI Mustang ll IFS and TCI rear leaf spring, carrying a Ford 9".   Power disc brakes on all four corners. Power steering, alloy wheels with 5 new tires on them.

ENGINE

1958 Chrysler Imperial 392 Hemi, professionally rebuilt with all new components. Engine is bored .60 over. K&N filters, Rocker assemblies are from Daytona Auto Design, Alloy 4 barrel intake, valley cover, timing cover, big block Chevy water pump adapters and crossovers are all from Hot Heads. New harmonic, pulleys, and required brackets to carry the alternator, power steering pump and air conditioner compressor from Hot Heads as well. The Hemi is backup with a fresh built 727 torqueflight transmission. 2 Core crossflow radiator and electric fan keeps things cool. Block hugger headers flowing to Flow Master exhaust.

BED

Oak wood bed, inside swinging supports and latches. The gas filler is located in the bed floor as the gas tank is under the rear of the bed instead of inside the cab. The tail lights are stainless housings and I also included bed roll lights that are turn signals and brake lights too.

INTERIOR

Tilt Flaming River Column with a Banjo wheel handles the steering task, behind it is an alloy dash insert with AutoMeter gauges. Ash tray has been removed but the glove box door is still there, although not use-able due to the VintageAir conditioner system occupying the space. I did install a cigar lighter for the purpose of charging cell phones as so many people now use them. Windows are electric, and the switches are over the mirror along with the necessary wiring to install a radio in that area as well. Seat belts with shoulder strap already installed. AS you can see, there is a bench seat presently installed to accommodate driving it anywhere. Insulation is installed but I have not installed any other interior, as I thought a buyer might want to incorporate his own tastes there. Interior kits are available and extremely easy to install with your choice of color, material and design.

Project Ugly Horse: Part V

Mon, 11 Feb 2013

The Slippery Slope
I've had a healthy appreciation for cars that stop since one truly unfortunate incident with a runaway 1971 Lincoln Continental.
It's funny how quickly a party can turn from, "We're all having blast" to "What happened to the front of the house, and how many stitches do you think this is going to take?" Standing in a Mustang salvage shop in Kodak, Tennessee, I couldn't help but feel I had strayed into the latter territory with Ugly Horse. There was a supercharged 5.4-liter V8 plucked from a rear-ended Cobra sitting off to my left. The shelves were lined with second-hand Roush and SVT components galore, but I couldn't stop staring at a set of rotors with the approximate diameter of my chest.

Jurassic Park made a big impact on these Jeep drivers

Thu, 12 Jun 2014

For a certain cohort of young folks, Jurassic Park is a touchstone film from their childhood. Not only did it play into practically every little boy's love of dinosaurs, the movie included some great action scenes and special effects that still hold up today. In its latest video, The Aficionauto takes a look the Jurassic Park Motor Pool, a California car club with over 40 fans who created replica vehicles from the iconic film.
The club is made up of an interesting cross-section of people. Many of them were Jeep Wrangler fans that already loved off-roading and Jurassic Park, and liked the idea of bringing them together. Like any close-knit club, it ends up being about community and people coming together to share their interests. It's quite a heartwarming video. Also, be sure to stay until the end because The Aficionauto teases a future Jurassic Park-themed vehicle. Scroll down to check out the motor pool.

NHTSA closes Ford F-150 EcoBoost acceleration probe

Mon, 14 Apr 2014

Typically when we report on the findings of an investigation from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, it's because the government body has discovered a safety issue and prescribed a recall. In this case, however, NHTSA has closed an investigation into a reported performance deficit without ever getting to the recall stage.
The issue revolves around the Ford F-150 - specifically those equipped with the 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine - of which some 360,000 were built in the 2011, 2012 and 2013 model years. After receiving an initial 95 complaints, NHTSA opened an investigation last May - almost a year ago - into the reported issue of reduced engine power under hard acceleration. The agency has since received a total of 525 such complaints, and Ford itself reported receiving over 4,000.
Together, NHTSA and Ford determined that the problem resulted from cylinders misfiring, an issue itself stemming from water getting into the charge air cooler (CAC) mated to the turbochargers. In particularly humid or rainy conditions, water was found to get into the CAC, causing some of the cylinders to misfire, which in turn triggered the ECU to disable those cylinders in order to protect the catalytic converter from damage.
