2002 Ford Explorer XLS
IT RUNS, BUT NEEDS WORK

THIS AUCTION IS NO RESERVE!

You already know that the Ford Explorer is a cool SUV. It's comfortable, has good features and good power. This one has never been wrecked. The interior is still pretty good. All the power accessories work, cold A/C, heater's good, etc....

I'm just going to list out the good and bad...

THE GOOD:
  • It Runs!
  • New Inspection
  • Clear and clean title
  • XLS Trim
  • Tow package with hitch ball
  • Cold A/C
  • Heater is good
  • Cruise Control
  • AM/FM/CD
  • Tires and wheels are ok
  • Upholstery is ok
  • Power windows all work
  • Back seat air vents and power
  • Fold-down seats
  • 4.0 SOHC engine
  • No coolant or major oil leaks
  • Brakes work fine
  • Luggage rack

THE BAD:

  • Engine runs a bit rough
  • You can start and drive the SUV when the engine is cold, but if you run it a while and shut the engine off, it will not start back up right away. Instead you have to let the engine completely cool down. And then it will start again. I know it's weird. There are several opinions on as to what this issue is. The most popular seems to be that it's the fuel pump or fuel filter. I don't know. And, I don't feel like messing with it.
  • The engine makes a rattling sound. My mechanic tells me it is being caused by worn timing chain guides. I don't think it really affects the way the engine runs, but it does make some noise. Not horrible though. It may be why the engines runs rough though.
  • Valve covers need gaskets replaced. There is some oil leaking onto the manifold, so sometimes you can smell it. It's not a huge leak though.
  • I had the transmission refurbished about 5 years ago or so. When the weather is cold outside, and you put the vehicle in reverse, sometimes it will not go right away. You can either shift into drive for a second, or just let the vehicle warm up for a minute or so, and then everything usually works fine.

Other issues-

  • The air for the AC and heater only blows straight out the main vents. This is due to a small plastic mechanism that is controlled by a switch beneath the dash by the glove compartment. I don't think this would be a difficult fix, but I didn't want to mess with it. So, I had my mechanic set it so that I could have good cold air out the vents for the summer. For the winter, I just point the main vents downword.
  • Some of the carpet in the rear, behind the backseat is damaged due to a car battery that we were returning leaking on the way to the store.

So, like with all of my auctions, I'm being as up front about everything as I can. If you are a mechanic, you could probably spend a few hours and maybe a couple hundred dollars and have a great vehicle with this Explorer. If you're not a mechanic, there is going to be some costs involved in making this vehicle run great again.

This would be a great fixer-upper, or a great parts vehicle. At minimum, to drive it regularly, you would have to get the "not starting reliably" issue resolved.

This auction is for LOCAL PICKUP ONLY.

THERE IS NO WARRANTY. THERE ARE NO RETURNS.

Good Luck, and contact me with any questions prior to bidding.

Payment is due within 3 days of auction end.

Pick up of the vehicle is required within a week.

Thanks so much.

Recharge Wrap-up: Ford's "snowtonomous" Fusion Hybrid, Porsche eyes battery makers

Fri, Mar 11 2016

Bosch and Panasonic are vying to be the battery supplier for Porsche's electric sports car based on the Mission E concept. While Bosch's costs may be higher, its solution would offer simpler logistics. Panasonic is already well established as a battery maker, providing the packs for the Porsche car's rival, Tesla. "We're in the final stage of making a decision," says Porsche CEO Oliver Blume, declining to comment on specific manufacturers. Neither Bosch nor Panasonic provided comment. Read more from Automotive News. Renault will supply a fleet of 150 Renault Zoe EVs for a smart solar charging project in Utrecht, Netherlands. The project involves the installation of 1,000 EV chargers powered by 10,000 photovoltaic panels. The Renault Zoes would be used as part of a carsharing program powered by the solar chargers. Renault and its partners will also implement a vehicle-to-grid system to provide energy during peak demand from the solar chargers and connected EVs. Read more in the press release from Renault. Ford has been testing an autonomous Fusion Hybrid prototype that is capable of driving itself in snowy conditions. Ford uses 3D mapping to scan the drive route. Its LiDAR laser mapping can even detect single falling snowflakes. It collects and processes up to 600 gigabytes of data per hour, comparing its environment to saved maps, a process that helps establish location more precisely than GPS. In addition to the LiDAR systems, the car is also equipped with cameras and radar to help it navigate. Eventually, the car could even be able to clean off its sensors when it detects loss of performance from ice and dirt. Read more in the press release below. FROM AUTONOMY TO SNOWTONOMY: HOW FORD FUSION HYBRID AUTONOMOUS RESEARCH VEHICLE CAN NAVIGATE IN WINTER DEARBORN, Mich., March 10, 2016 – Driving in snow can be a slippery challenge, with the potential for one blizzardy gust to white-out your field of view – a situation faced by the majority of people in the United States. So if self-driving cars are to become a reality – and they almost certainly will – they must be able to navigate snow-covered roads. In its quest to bring self-driving vehicles to millions of people around the world, Ford reveals six facts about its technology that allows for a car to drive itself in snow. 1. Mapping the way: Ford first creates high-resolution 3D maps using LiDAR technology to scan the area its autonomous vehicle will later drive in the snow.

Ford Fiesta ST orders off to strong start

Fri, 17 May 2013

We at Autoblog love the new little Ford Fiesta ST, and apparently, folks in Europe are pretty impressed with it, as well. According to Ford, the automaker's European arm has already logged 3,000 orders for the new hot hatch since it hit dealerships this March. The US-spec car, which will only be available as a five-door, will go on sale in the United States this summer.
What's perhaps most interesting about the Fiesta ST ordering is that the majority of customers appear to be ordering high-spec cars. According to Ford data, 60 percent of customers have opted for the leather interior with Recaro buckets, and 90 percent have selected the upgraded 17-inch wheels (seen on our test car, above). Spirit Blue has been the most popular color, commanding 27 percent of all orders. As for the technology upgrades, 19 percent of customers have ponied up for the Sony stereo with navigation.
To recap, the Fiesta ST is offered with Ford's 1.6-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine, putting out 179 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque, mated exclusively to a six-speed manual transmission. We had an absolute blast flinging the hot Fiesta through the French Alps, and we can't wait for this sharp little hatch to make its way over to the States.

Ford Mustang GT Bi-Fuel CNG

Tue, 23 Jul 2013

Highly intrigued, we recently visited a Southern California Gas Company office to check out several hybrid vehicles promising something new. Unlike more commonplace gasoline-electric hybrids, we were there to evaluate innovative gasoline-compressed natural gas (CNG) hybrids - yes, they run on unleaded gasoline and compressed natural gas. According to the experts on hand, this arrangement delivers extended range and reduced emissions while chipping in with lower operating costs than pure-gasoline vehicles. There are advantages over its gasoline-electric counterparts, as well.
The program is part of a three-way collaboration between The Carlab, a Southern California-based automotive consulting firm, Landi Renzo USA, a company specializing in alternative fuel solutions, and America's Natural Gas Alliance, a group that promotes CNG. Long story short, the team has engineered a way to allow a modified internal combustion vehicle to seamlessly switch between two fuels (gasoline and CNG) with no driver intervention. In theory, and if it works as well as promised, it's a win-win for the vehicle owner and the environment.
Parked at the Gas Company office were six different gasoline-CNG hybrid vehicles. To demonstrate the technology's versatility (just about any gasoline vehicle may be modified) Carlab brought a varied assortment of bodystyles, each from a different automaker. After taking a quick glance at the half-dozen in the parking lot, we made a beeline for the performance-oriented Ford Mustang GT - a 2012 model - with the six-speed manual gearbox.
