I am the original and only owner of this 2001 Ford Explorer XLT with Leather Seats, Multi-CD changer in the middle console, non-smoker, never been in a wreck, and low miles...80,293 at the time of this listing.   If you were looking around for an affordable four wheel drive vehicle and wanted to save money with a vehicle that had a couple issues to disclose, this is one that will be sold on auction with no reserve so thanks for bidding and good luck. This is a fairly good running and overall nice looking Explorer for its age with four wheel drive that just needs a little mechanical attention.

Mechanically, the 4.0L six cylinder runs very well with lots of power and no apparent smoke or leaks. This is listed in poor condition since the automatic transmission has a slight hesitation between 1st and 2nd gear but otherwise drives well and it has served our family very well. This could likely be the most expensive repair so please bid accordingly.  The brakes are strong, and no warning lights are illuminated on the dash. The ball joints and rear struts may need to be inspected and replaced.  There is decent amount of tread on all tires, there is cracking on all tires from sitting in the hot Texas sun.

The interior of the car is fairly healthy with no major rips or tears in the leather seats, the front driver seat is more worn as shown in picture from normal use and there are black marks on the back of the seats.  Clean cargo area and clean and odor-free carpets. The headliner is in tact and tight and the dash is perfect with all the power options and 4WD functioning as they should. There is a crack on the drive side door speaker cover, but speaker still works fine and the cargo area side panels are scuffed up that is hard to tell from pic.  Maintenance done over the past couple years includes: Radiator and Transmission Flushes, Oil Changes, replaced the center console arm rest due to wear, replaced Front Hood Latch, replaced battery, AC was serviced and works great, state inspection is current. No signs of pets and no smell of tobacco so overall it has been pretty well taken care of.

The body of the car is listed in poor condition due to slight fading above rear driver side door, trim on top has been painted black to fix fading issue, but done by professional, all other black trim shows fading, including bumpers and side trim.  There are 3 very small door dings and  about 5 small dings from hail, most you have to look at angle to even see them.  There is overspray over the majority of the car from being too close to fence when being stained and have heard it can be cleaned using Meguiar's Smooth Surface Clay Kit.  Front Wipers work good, rear wiper needs new wiper blade and cigarette lighter is missing.  There is a very small crack in the bottom part of the front windshield smaller than a dime and doesn't obstruct view.  No major dents aside from typical nicks and scratches and no rust as this has been in North Texas since we bought it new.  We would keep this car, but needed to get bigger car for our family.

I did the best I could to list all known issues, but the car is over 10 years old and may have other defects that aren't known to me, so I encourage you to inspect the car prior to bidding and is being sold AS-IS. Will be happy to answer any questions or schedule a test drive with proof of insurance and valid drivers license.

Winning bidder to make transportation arrangements.  Will work with shipping company of your choice to help transaction go smooth.  I have clear title and will be transferred to wining bidder within 48 hours of confirmed payment.

Junkyard Gem: 1993 Mercury Topaz GS Sedan

Sat, Aug 13 2022

As long as the Mercury brand existed — a period spanning the 1939 through 2011 model years — nearly every Mercury sold in the United States was more or less a redecorated Ford model. The Torino had its Montego sibling, the Crown Victoria had the Grand Marquis, the Cougar was based on everything from the Mustang to the Mondeo, and so on. Naturally, when the folks in Dearborn developed the Ford Tempo compact, a Mercury version had to be created. This was the Topaz, with the official launch of both cars taking place on the deck of the aircraft carrier often referred to as the USS Decrepit. You can't make this stuff up! The Tempo/Topaz, also known as the Tempaz, has largely faded from our collective automotive memory by now, since it broke no significant new engineering or styling ground (this story would be much different if Ford had only put the amazing straight-eight "T-Drive" Tempaz powertrain into production) and didn't have any endearing features other than being a cheap domestic competitor to the Toyota Corolla and Nissan Sentra. Still, close to 3 million Tempazes left North American Ford and Lincoln-Mercury showrooms during the 1984-1994 period. As you'd expect, most of these disposable cars disappeared from both the street and the car graveyard long ago. It takes a very special Tempaz for me to break out my camera while I'm patrolling my local wrecking yards; generally, this means an ultra-rare all-wheel-drive version or at least a very early model in super-clean condition. Today's Junkyard Gem is neither, but I took one look at this spectacular Bordello Red crypto-velour-and-slippery-plastic interior and recognized that this was no ordinary junkyard Mercury. It appears that Mercury had dropped the idea of clever names for base-grade seat fabrics by the time of the Topaz, referring to this stuff as just "cloth" in all the brochures I could find. That's too bad, because Mercurys had cool names for upholstery (e.g., Chromatex) in the old days. The interior is in very good condition but the steering wheel shows substantial wear, so I think this is a high-mile Topaz that got meticulous care from its owner or owners. Ford used five-digit odometers on these cars until the end of production, however, so we'll never know if this reading indicates 65,404 miles or 365,404 miles. The body is very straight, but there's some nasty corrosion behind the right front wheelwell.

Toyota tops Kelley Blue Book's Resale Value Awards

Tue, 27 Nov 2012

Kelley Blue Book announced its annual Best Resale Value Award winners, and we weren't too surprised to see the list dominated by Japanese automakers - mainly Toyota and Honda. KBB hands out the awards based on the projected residual value of mostly all 2013 model year vehicles, and Toyota skated home with a number of awards including 10 of the 22 overall categories and having five of its products in the top 10 for models with best resale value. KBB's Best Resale Value Awards were announced in the same week as the ALG Residual Value Awards, and there were many similarities between both lists, especially when it came to Toyota.
To come up with its winners, KBB measures depreciation over the first five years of ownership, and looks for the cars it expects to hold its value the best after this time; on average, the report says the 2013 model year vehicles will lose 61.8 percent of its value in five years. Of the 22 categories, 15 slots were filled by Toyota, Honda and Nissan products, while the Camaro and Porsche (Cayenne and Panamera) each took home a pair of awards. If Toyota has anything to be upset about in this list of cars, it's that categories for Hybrid/Alternative Energy Car and Electric Vehicle went to the Ford Fusion and Chevrolet Volt, respectively.
The overall top 10 models for the best resale value in 2013 are, in alphabetical order:

How the 2015 Ford Mustang will save your knees

Sat, 21 Jun 2014

The 2015 Mustang is one of the most hotly anticipated vehicles of the moment, and Ford continues to leak out interesting little details about its newest pony car. The latest info doesn't have anything to do with its quarter-mile time or handling, but if any of that goes drastically wrong, the innovative new glovebox-mounted airbag may prevent passengers from knee injuries.
All variants of the 2015 Mustang get the active knee airbag as standard, and it's the first vehicle in Ford's lineup to receive the system. The setup is actually quite simple and ingenious. The glovebox is made from a plastic outer panel that is attached to the inner door. Sandwiched between them is this new injection-molded plastic bladder that folds flat when in use. If the passenger-side airbag deploys, the system springs into action to act as a cushion for your knees. Compared to a traditional knee airbag that has to fully inflate, this arrangement is 65 percent lighter and can use a 75 percent smaller inflator. It's also basically invisible when you look at the glovebox door.
Ford spokesperson Ed Saenz declined to tell Autoblog whether the system will appear in other vehicles in the Blue Oval's lineup but said, "We're considering other applications." Provided it's effective, the approach seems too simple not to make its way to other products. Scroll down to watch a video showing how the glovebox-mounted knee airbag works.
