I am selling my 1993 Ford E-350 4x4 7.3l Diesel Van. This van was built by AEV (American Emergency Vehicles) and has low mileage and no rust. This is currently registered in California and is smog exempt. This van is a Quigley 4x4 build and I believe the front axle is a Dana 60 and the rear a Dana 70. This van was well maintained throughout its life and I do have some repair receipts from throughout the years. The van runs and drives great. It pulls hills with ease and shifts smoothly. The transmission was rebuilt at 120,816. New tires and batteries were installed last year. The interior has a Kenwood CD player with remote, interior flood and fluorescent lights along with exterior lights. The exterior lighting is great for setting up camp in the dark. There is a roof mounted solar panel along with a power inverter. There are two batteries located in the engine compartment and two batteries in the cabin. The cab A/C works well and blows cold. This van has been mildly converted for camping/expedition and the improvements include a small foot pump sink with removable clean and gray water tanks. The van has a 30 amp outlet and I have an extension cord adapter to plug into house/KOA power. I also have a small portable propane heater and portable toilet. The interior is laminated and very easy to clean. The interior cabinets have sliding glass doors that are solid and do not make noise when driving. There is a semi-permanent bench and storage under the rear seats, along with a removable table that converts into a bed. You can see this converted in the pictures. There is dynamat insulation installed under the carpet in the cab to minimize heat and noise. I have a set of black Carr steps for the driver and passenger that I have not yet installed. The body and paint are in good shape with a few small dents and scratches. Overall, the van is in good condition for its age. I would feel confident driving this vehicle anywhere. Whether you want to put this back into service or use it as and expedition vehicle, the possibilities are endless. Feel free to contact me with any questions, (916) 865-8177. More pictures available upon request. A video of the van can be seen at, http://youtu.be/kls8TCINxVY

Ford reveals concept trucks that ultimately became Atlas

Wed, 03 Apr 2013

The Ford Atlas Concept was one of the quiet success stories of the 2013 Detroit Auto Show, and now Ford has given us a quick glimpse as to how that creation came to be. Designers actually combined two early sketches to build the Atlas. One, called the Bullet Train, is a futuristic, aerodynamic creation, while the other, aptly named the Locomotive, features the squared off proportions we're familiar with.
Once designers settled on the truck's proportions, they began nailing down exactly which attributes they wanted the final design to have. The Concept's notched windshield originated as a forked glass roof that seamlessly transitioned into the windscreen.
Likewise, designers wanted to fit the truck's tailgate with a storage compartment for tools and a first aid kit, but settled on the dual-purpose step/cargo cradle. Interestingly enough, the concept's active aero shutter wheels actually originated in some of the earliest sketches. Check out the photos and slides here for a closer look.

Should heavy-duty pickup trucks have window stickers with fuel mileage estimates?

Sat, Sep 23 2017

If you were to stroll into your nearest Chevrolet, Ford, GMC, Nissan, or Ram dealership, you'd find a bunch of pickup trucks. Most of those would have proper window stickers labeled with things like base prices, options prices, location of manufacture, and, crucially, fuel economy estimates. But you'd also run across a number of heavy-duty trucks with no such fuel mileage data from the Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA doesn't require automakers to publish the valuable miles-per-gallon measurement for vehicles with gross weight ratings that exceed 8,500 pounds. That makes it difficult for consumers to compare behemoths powered by turbocharged diesel engines – between one another, and between smaller, gasoline-fueled trucks. Consumer Reports doesn't think it should be this way, and it's spearheading an effort (PDF link) to get the government to require manufacturers to publish fuel economy estimates. In its own testing, CR found that heavy-duty pickups powered by Ford's Power Stroke, GM's Duramax, and FCA's Cummins diesel engines (which doesn't include the Ram's EcoDiesel) get worse fuel mileage than their lighter-duty gas-powered siblings. We're not so sure HD-truck buyers are unaware of this fact – big diesels don't really come into their own until big loads are placed in their beds or attached to their trailer hitches. Under heavy workloads, the diesel trucks will almost certainly return greater efficiency than a similar gas-powered truck. What's more, HD trucks with lumbering diesels in general make the driver feel more confident while towing due to greater torque at low engine RPM than gas trucks. They also offer greater max-weight limits. Still, we agree EPA fuel mileage estimates should be offered for heavy-duty pickups. And we think the comparisons provided by Consumer Reports might be interesting to potential buyers. Click here to see the results of CR's tests, and let us know what you think using the poll below. Ford Q3 pretax profits drop to $1.18B

Fri, 24 Oct 2014

Following positive third quarter financial results recently from General Motors, rival Ford took a tumble in Q3. The automaker posted pre-tax profits of $1.18 billion, compared to about $2.59 billion in Q3 2013, a drop of around 54 percent. Net income also suffered with $835 million made in the quarter, versus $1.272 billion last year, a decline of about 34 percent. The Blue Oval blamed the gloomy figures on three reasons in its release: "lower volume, higher warranty costs and adverse balance sheet exchange effects."
There were problems of one kind or another in practically every region. North America experienced higher warranty costs than expected, partially due to recalls. The sales volume for the quarter was 665,000 units, versus 725,000 in Q3 2013, and pre-tax results amounted to $1.41 billion versus $2.296 billion last year.
South America and Europe both posted worse pre-tax results than last year. On the bright side, European volume was up slightly to 321,000 vehicles, from 303,000 in Q3 2013. The Middle East and Africa also lost $15 million, but that was an improvement compared to the $25 million loss previously experienced in this region.
