THIS IS A PROJECT I STARTED BUT AM UNABLE TO COMPLETE DUE TO TIME. THE BRONCO RUNS GOOD. I JUST HAD THE CARBURETOR REBUILT, COMPLETE BRAKE JOB, NEW EXHAUST MANIFOLDS AND DUAL EXHAUST, NEW FUEL TANK. I PUT THE BRONCO IN THE PAINT SHOP AND THEY STARTED THE WORK AND THEN WENT OUT OF BUSINESS. THE VEHICLE IS SANDED AND NEEDS VERY LITTLE BODY WORK. FLOORS HAVE BEEN REPLACED AND I PURCHASED A BRAND NEW TAILGATE WHICH IS NOT YET INSTALLED. I HAVE ALL NEW UPHOLSTERY INCLUDING DOOR PANELS AND ARMRESTS, NEW RUBBER, REPAINT SEAL KIT, NEW GAS CAPS, FILLER NECK HOSE, NEW FENDER FLARES, AND OTHER MISC PARTS. Automakers tussle over owners of 'orphan' makes
Thu, 10 May 2012When General Motors put down several of its brands in recent years, it also let loose thousands of brand-loyal customers who will eventually need another car.
R.L. Polk Associates estimates there are more than 18 million cars from 16 discontinued makes on the road today. Those "orphan owners" have sales-hungry competitors seeing dollar signs. GM is offering Saturn owners $1,000 cash toward a Chevy Cruze, Cadillac CTS or a GMC Acadia. Ford is giving its Mercury lease customers a chance to get out of their contracts with no early-termination penalty and offering to waive six remaining payments if they drive off in a Ford or Lincoln.
Edmunds.com research shows the efforts are paying off somewhat for GM, with 39 percent of Pontiac owners, 37 percent of Hummer owners and 31 percent of Saturn owners taking delivery of another GM-branded vehicle. But that leaves as much as 69 percent of owners going elsewhere. Ford, Honda and Toyota seem to be attracting many former GM owners.
Did a US automaker blow the whistle on Hyundai, Kia fuel economy issue?
Mon, 17 Dec 2012In all of the most hotly contested mainstream segments of the motoring universe, the difference of one mile per gallon averaged on a widow sticker can mean the difference between a sale and a walk-off - to say nothing of two or three mpg. So, when Hyundai and Kia were forced to reveal that many of their 40-mpg ratings were actually 38s and 37s, well, it made for big news.
It also, conceivably, made for a competitive disadvantage immediately, when the Korean automakers' products were being shopped versus the guys down the block. And it's that disadvantage that makes a recent story from Automotive News so juicy.
AN is reporting that Margo Oge, former head of the Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Transportation and Air Quality, got a tip in 2010 that Hyundai/Kia were "cheating" to get its impressive fuel economy numbers. The tip, said Oge (who retired from the EPA this past September), came from a senior vice president from a domestic automaker. The source was credible enough for Oge to launch an audit of the Hyundai figures, which ultimately lead to the debacle that we reported on a few months ago, and that the Korean company has been trying to bounce back from ever since.
