Iveco spotted testing jacked-up Daily 4x4 in the snow

The Italians go up against the Mercedes Sprinter with the Fiat Ducato, better known around these parts as the Ram ProMaster. But that's not the only full-size van associated with the burgeoning Fiat empire. So too is the Iveco Daily, and here we're looking at the latest version. Spied undergoing cold-weather testing in the snow, this version of the Daily is a chassis cab with a cargo bed, a jacked-up suspension and four-wheel drive. The chassis cab is just one of a number of configurations available for the Iveco Daily, which is perhaps more commonly seen on roads across Europe and around the world as a cargo van or mini-bus. But the 4x4 looks new to our eyes. Now if you're scratching your head and wondering what Iveco is and where it stands in the growing Fiat Chrysler Automobiles empire, the short of it is that it doesn't. Not quite, anyway. Once part of the Fiat Group, it's now part of CNH Industrial – otherwise known as Case New Holland – whose largest shareholder is the same Agnelli-owned Exor holding company that controls the largest share of FCA. That doesn't mean that the Daily, in this form or any other, will make the jump to the North American market any time soon – as an Iveco, a Ram or under any other brand – but as far as professional-grade machinery goes, this piece of forbidden fruit is looking pretty cool. Fiat and PSA predicted to be Europe's biggest losers in 2013

Industry observers are expecting Europe's new vehicle sales to fall to lows not seen in decades, with Fiat and PSA/Peugeot-Citroën sitting in the lead car of the plummeting coaster. Both of those automakers traditionally count on the southern part of the continent for sales, yet consumers in that region have slowed spending due to the financial crisis.
Compounding the problem for Fiat is a lack of new product, as CEO Sergio Marchionne has stalled development to conserve cash during the downturn. PSA has invested in new vehicles, but aggressive price wars have forced it to sell its product with steep discounts. Making matters even more difficult, both companies may have their credit ratings cut this year. That would raise borrowing costs and only deepen the wounds.
The news isn't just bad for Fiat and PSA. Analysts are predicting that volume automakers in Europe lost 8 billion euros (about $10.68 billion in today's rates) overall in 2012, and they won't break even until mid-decade.

2014 Fiat 500L

The saying goes that man cannot live by bread alone, and neither can automakers live by selling one car alone. This holds especially true for automakers with a budding dealer network to support, like the Fiat brand, which returned to US shores in 2011 after a 28-year absence. The company's single car to sell at the time was the Fiat 500, a cute retro rebirth of the original, iconic Cinquecento, which your toddler now calls Luigi thanks to Pixar.
Since then, the new 500 has sold reasonably well here in the US, and the Fiat brand has been following the same playbook that another purveyor of pint-sized autos, Mini, has used: sell as many variants as you can of the one model you've got. So we have the 500, 500C drop top, high-performance 500 Abarth, all-electric 500e and a few additional trim levels and special editions to further fill dealer showrooms. But the axiom that automakers cannot live selling one car alone still stands, and so Fiat has finally introduced its second model, the larger 500L.
Executive Editor Chris Paukert completed our First Drive of the 500L back in June, and was left pleasantly surprised by its combination of utility, offbeat style, fun-to-drive demeanor and value. We've also, however, read some scathing reviews, like this one from The New York Times. I wasn't sure where the truth lay when the keys for this top-trim 2014 Fiat 500L Lounge were handed to me, but finding out would be but a short week of together time away.
