Maserati planning second smaller SUV?

Sun, 16 Dec 2012

Maserati's product plans have taken a few wild turns, but as we get closer to production dates for the long-awaited offerings things are getting a wee bit clearer. The the sixth-generation Maserati Quattroporte is here, and a quick recap according to a report in Car and Driver has the smaller Ghibli sedan on Chrysler's LX/LY platform next, then the next-generation GranTurismo coupe and cabrio on a Maserati platform, then the Kubang SUV concept (pictured) that, for production, will become the larger Jeep-Cherokee-based Levante SUV.
All of which gets us to 2015. That same year, according to the report, the Levante will get a brother: a smaller SUV or crossover, perhaps sized like the Kubang concept, to challenge the Audi Q5 and the Porsche Macan. It is predicted to use the Compact US Wide platform, built for front-wheel and all-wheel-drive vehicles, that supports the Dodge Dart and 2014 Alfa Romeo Giulia. In addition to giving the premium brand a competitor in what is a very popular segment, a Maserati move slightly downmarket can help fill a gap while Fiat brass figures out what to do with Lancia.

Fiat updates Euro-spec 500 with new equipment, Cult trim

Mon, 03 Mar 2014

It's been seven years since Fiat relaunched the 500, and it has, by and large, been a runaway success for the Italian automaker. Numerous variations on the theme have followed - from the convertible 500C and performance-oriented Abarth models to the 500L minivan and upcoming 500X crossover - but it's high time that Fiat give the original hatchback a bit of a refresh, and that's just what it's done... to some extent, anyway.
Debuting this week at the Geneva Motor Show, the updated 500 features a number of enhancements to keep it fresh and with (if not quite ahead of) the times. That includes a redesigned instrument cluster centered around a seven-inch TFT display developed by Magnetti Marelli. There's a new 900cc turbo two-pot TwinAir engine being offered with 105 horsepower and 107 pound-feet of torque that can get a Cinquecento so equipped to 62 miles per hour in 10 seconds and on to a 117-mph top speed while delivering 67 miles per gallon (at least on the European cycle). Finally there's a new Cult trim level pictured here, being added to the top of the range that builds on the Lounge trim with more equipment like 16-inch alloys, gloss black roof, chrome or gloss black wing mirrors and more.
We're still waiting to find out what, if any, of this equipment will make the jump to the US model, but for now you can scope out the press release below and the high-res images in the gallery above for a closer look.

Fiat to reveal new 500 on July 4

Wed, Jun 10 2015

Fiat has announced that it will reveal a new 500 on July 4 – now just a few weeks away - and just one day after we saw spy shots of the prototypes undergoing testing. The date is not only significant for the American side of the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles group, but for the Italian one as well. In 1957, Fiat rolled out the original Cinquecento in Turin on July 4. Of course a lot has happened since then, and several generations of the 500 have followed. The current model was introduced in 2007, and has since reached over 100 markets around the world with over 1.5 million sold. Since the introduction of the current 500 hatchback, Fiat has rolled out the 500C with an opening roof panel, the 500L for hauling families, and the 500X crossover – to say nothing of the Abarth performance models. As the 500L and 500X aren't directly related to the hatchback, however, they'll likely carry over in their current form after the three-door model is replaced next month. Fiat will be introducing the New 500 on 4 July The countdown to 4 July, the birthday of the iconic 500, has started. It is an important anniversary and this year there will be a great surprise for the millions of fans all over the world who drive it, want it or just admire it. The New 500 is coming and it will be revealed precisely on 4 July, during an unforgettable event. Born in Turin on 4 July 1957, the 500 was revamped in 2007 and since then it has offered the public something new every year. Marketed in more than 100 countries in the world and with more than 1.5 million registered vehicles, the iconic Fiat never ceases to amaze and surprise people with its countless versions and interpretations.
