2017 Fiat Model Year Preview and Updates
Wed, Feb 15 2017With the 'new' having worn off of Fiat's 500, it's left to the FIAT 124 SPIDER to heat up the Fiat showroom. 124 Spider: The Fiat two-seater is all-new, and from a branding perspective a return to a designation popular with Fiat fans throughout the '70s. This, however, is more Hiroshima than Turin. Its platform is shared with Mazda's Miata, while Fiat supplies its own brand-specific sheetmetal and drivetrain. 500: Despite its relative freshness here in the States, the 500 is in its tenth year of global production. Changes in '17 are both minor and substantive. For the convenience of buyers (and sanity of dealers) trim levels are reduced to Pop, Lounge and Abarth; window stickers are lowered across the lineup; and options that were once available only in packages are now offered separately. The end result is some surprisingly good price points, from top (Abarth) to bottom. 500L: Fewer trim levels and lower prices, while still failing to answer the question: Why is this sold in the US? 500X: An Italianate take on the Jeep Renegade, which itself is a Jeep-oriented take on the 500X. Like the other models in the Fiat lineup, trim levels on the 500X are reduced to three – Pop, Trekking and Lounge – while the window stickers are lowered and options are now available separately.
Jay Leno gifts wounded warrior a Fiat 124 Spider Abarth
Tue, Nov 1 2016Comedian and car guy Jay Leno is making the talk show rounds ahead of the debut of the new season of Jay Leno's Garage. After revisiting his old digs at The Tonight Show on Monday, Leno arrived on the set of The Today Show Tuesday morning, and much as he did in 2014, one of America's wounded veterans was the big beneficiary. Stephanie Morris, a US Army specialist was stationed at Bagram Air Force Base in Afghanistan when two rocket-propelled grenades landed inside the base's perimeter, shattering her left femur and fracturing her right foot. What followed was three years at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, where Spc. Morris worked to keep her right leg, undergoing intensive physical therapy and three dozen failed surgeries before ultimately deciding on amputation following her participation in the Warrior Games last June. The amputation was on the Fourth of July. Leno, who's long been a supporter of American troops and an active USO participant, met with Spc. Morris, and took her for a spin in the new Fiat 124 Abarth Spider. And like Leno did in 2014 when he gave Corporal Ethan Laberge a Dodge Challenger Hellcat, Morris's visit with the comedian ended with the Abarth's keys in her hand. Watch the video above. Buy a real Popemobile: the Pontiff's Fiat 500L
Sat, Jan 23 2016Pope Francis has urged people to drive "humble" cars, and he practiced what he preached during last year's US visit by riding in a Fiat 500L rather than a more opulent vehicle. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia will offer the chance to feel a little closer to His Holiness on January 29 by auctioning at least one of the Fiats from the Pope's trip at the Philadelphia Auto Show Black Tie Tailgate. All of the auction's proceeds will follow Pope Francis' desire to help the less fortunate. Half of the money will go to the Catholic Charities Appeal, which aids those that struggle with homelessness and poverty. The other half will be split equally among Mercy Hospice, Casa Del Carmen, and the Schools of Special Education of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. "The Fiat is such an icon of Pope Francis' visit to Philadelphia and the auction of this vehicle serves as an extraordinary final event to close this memorable chapter in the City's history," Donna Crilley Farrell, Executive Director of the World Meeting of Families – Philadelphia 2015, said. FCA US let Pope Francis use two 500Ls while he was in Philadelphia, and the automaker then donated the cars to the Archdiocese, according to its director of communications Kenneth Gavin to Autoblog. The Archdiocese still hasn't decided whether to auction the other one at the Black Tie Tailgate, but the Fiat will be on display at the Philadelphia Auto Show from January 30 through February 7. It's difficult to put a price tag on these special vehicles, Gavin told Autoblog, but the Archdiocese hopes to get as much as possible for them to benefit the charities. FCA US and the US Secret Service have records of the cars' VINs from the trip, and the Archdiocese would show the winning bidder all the documentation to certify the vehicle's authenticity.
